ABSTRACT

In the most recent time, the popularity of social media has grown tremendously in the last decade and is projected to grow even more in the coming years. Underpinned by marketing equity and Chaffey’s theories, the current study aimed at adducing empirical evidence on the relationship and association between Social Media as a marketing approach and organizational performance in the context of Small and Medium Enterprises in Lagos State.

The target population of this study would be all the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Lagos State enlisted by the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Authority (MSEA). The study used a descriptive survey design and sampled 255 respondents out of which 204 successfully complete and returned the questionnaires. INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

The acceptance, usage, and popularity of social media have grown tremendously in the last few decades in well-developed countries and developed nations in the world. This is projected to grow even more in the coming years (Ashley & Tuten, 2015). Businesses appear to be in a rush to use these internet applications as a marketing platform for their products and services, with the main aim of acquiring new customers and retaining existing ones, and to eventually increase sales and maximize profits. Against the backdrop of stiff competition in the market, the majority of SMEs have opted to use digital marketing as a marketing strategy to ensure they achieve their marketing and sales objectives (Castronovo & Huang, 2012).

Online marketing has, hence, proven to be cost-effective and the returns seem to be sustainable since the target market is readily accessible thus information and ideas are easily relayed on the different social media platforms where the whole engagement and interaction are based. According to Chaffey (2016), Social Media as a strategy has key concepts that are meant to build and maintain an interested online community of engaged followers and supporters.

If effectively implemented, this strategy will enhance product awareness and encourage the market to identity, purchase, consume, and repurchase the product being marketed online thus cultivating brand loyalty. Based on the main and core objective of the research, in this particular region, a few studies have been conducted and submitted for examination. Most of them have focused on the use of social media in other fields, but few have looked at it as a marketing tool. Data analyses comprised numeric measures and were done using descriptive statistics. It helped to display the data distribution, including measures of central tendency and dispersion. Multiple regression models were used to measure the association between the variables as stated in the objective of the study. This was done using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23. The study analytical model was finally guided by the regression model below:

RESEARCH FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

Introduction

This section entails data analysis, the results, presentation, and discussion. Data analysis involves demographic analysis, descriptive, and regression analyses. The discussion of findings relates to the theoretical and prior empirical comparison with the findings of the current study.

Response Rate

200 respondents were targeted by the study, from whom 160(80%) successfully returned the questionnaires. Mugenda et al. (1999) suggest that a response rate of 70 percent and above is excellent. Based on the assertion, the response rate was considered to be excellent. Table 4.1: Response Rate

The respondents gave information about the age of their businesses as shown in Figure 4.2 below.

From Figure 4.2 above, 5% of the businesses were less than one year old, 11% were 1 to 3 years old, 45% were 4 to 6 years old, 26% were 7-9 years old, while 13% were above 9 years old. Abstract

The study assesses of the Usage of Computer Application in secondary schools of Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria. Previous empirical studies have underscored the important roles of instructional materials in the classroom setup. Studies the world over have also highlighted the roles of computer as an instructional material in the classroom particularly in regard to assisting in enriching the teaching-learning experience of perceived difficult subjects such as Mathematics.

It is therefore surprising that most schools in the country are yet to integrate its use in teaching and learning of such subjects even though the Government and its development partners have invested colossal amounts of scarce resource in stocking schools with computer hardware and software. A descriptive survey study was employed to obtain both qualitative and quantitative data on factors that affect the use of computers in teaching and learning of Mathematics in the district. Stratified random sampling was used to select 323 form three students and 32 Mathematics teachers.

All the Principals of the participating schools were also requested to participate in the study. INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

A catchphrase in education today is Information Communication and Technologies (ICT) use. The rapid growth in ICT has brought remarkable changes in the twenty-first century, as well as affected the demands of modern societies.

Introduction

Computer technology has been in use since 1970s and many countries have adopted this technology as a medium of instruction in primary schools, secondary schools, colleges and universities. In Nigeria, many private and public schools have adopted this computer technology as a medium of instruction in computer science.

However, computer technology has not been integrated in the mathematics classrooms in secondary schools. According to Dwyer and Margot (1975) in a report about ‘project solo’ – a project about people involved in computer learning carried out between 1970 and 1977, elaborate experimentation with various modes of using computers in high schools was carried out and computer-related curriculum modules for secondary schools developed.

The project which was jointly supported by the National Science Foundation and the University of Pittsburgh focused upon computer-augmented learning in secondary schools, engineering and other fields. The primary objective of the project was to stimulate students to analyse, synthesize, evaluate and apply Mathematics on their own by using algorithmic problem solving and student-controlled computing as catalysts (Scardamalia, 2004).

Research Design

The main purpose of this study was to find out the factors affecting the use of computers as a medium of teaching and learning of Mathematics in secondary schools in Ibadan, Oyo state. A descriptive survey design was adopted for this study.

DATA FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

Introduction

The chapter presents an analysis of the data collected from a sample of 323 form three students, 32 Mathematics teachers and 16 principals of selected secondary schools of Ibadan with computers. Data analysis and report of findings was done using descriptive statistics in the form of tables, frequencies and percentages. Background information of respondents

Respondents to the items used in this analysis included form 3 students, Mathematics teachers and school principals. A number of items that include gender, age, and educational background were used to provide information on their background characteristics.

Students’ background information

Students were required to indicate their gender and age as a source of information on their background information.

The results of their responses were tabulated and represented in Figure 4.1 and Figure 4.2 respectively.

Figure 4.1 which contains a summary of students’ responses to items on their background information shows that 164 (50.8%) of the respondents were females, and 159(49.2%) were males depicting a near gender parity for sampled population of the respondents.

Teachers background information

Teachers were required to indicate their gender, level of education and computer literacy among other issues as a source of information on their background information.

Conclusions of the study findings were made based on the relationships that were established for each of the different objectives. From the foregoing summary of findings, it can be concluded that:

• Secondary schools in Ibadan sampled in the study lacked enough computers, power generators and lacked adequately equipped computer laboratories to ensure the use of computers in teaching and learning mathematics. The computer laboratories are not big enough in size to accommodate all students, indicating that the average number of students per computer is very high for the effective use of computers in teaching and learning mathematics. Revenue accrues to the government through diverse sources which include grants, foreign aid, government’s direct investment in commercial ventures, and taxation. Taxation may not be the most important source of revenue to the government in terms of the magnitude of revenue derivable from it but it is the most important source given its consistency and certainty.

Taxation is, therefore, a compulsory levy by the government through its various agencies on the incomes, capital, or consumption of its subjects. These levies are made on personal income such as interests, dividends, business profits, commissions, and salaries (Anuebunwa 2010: 10). Taxation tends to influence the decision of businesses at all levels, it affects their financing decision, investment decision, and dividend decision.

The Concept of Taxation

One of the simplest definitions of tax that I have come across is one offered by the New Webster Dictionary of the English Language. It describes ‘tax’ simply as a charge imposed by the governmental authority upon property, individuals, or transactions to raise money for public purposes.

Tax is a compulsory extraction of money by a public authority for public purposes and Taxation is a system of raising money for the purpose of governance by the means of contributions from individual persons or corporate bodies (Sayade & Kojola 2006). According to the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary (1995:224) tax is money that has to be paid to the government.

History of Taxation In Nigeria

Taxation in Nigeria started with personal income tax in 1904 when Lord Lugard introduces income tax in the northern part of Nigeria. Community tax becomes operative through the revenue ordinance of 1904.

In 1917, after the amalgamation of the northern and southern protectorates, the 1904 Revenue Ordinance was replaced by the native Revenue Ordinance of 1917. Furthermore, the provision of the 1917 ordinance was amended in 1918 and extended to southern Nigeria particularly, the West and the Mid-West, and subsequently to Eastern Nigeria in 1928.

Administration of Taxation In Nigeria

The administration of the companies’ income tax vested in the Federal Board of Inland Revenue (FBIR) it is thus responsible for its care and management. Federal Board of Inland Revenue also referred to as board the “Board” has an operational arm known as the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), which came into effect in 1993.

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) also known as the “Service” is saddled with the responsibility of income tax assignment, collecting accounting and administration.

Effect of Taxation on Investment Decisions of a Business

The effects of taxation on business investment have long been a focus of research in economics and finance. In the long run, the taxation of income from the capital can provide the revenues needed to fund the government, but may depress capital formation, output, and consumption.

The optimal long-run level of capital income taxation remains the subject of vigorous debate in both the theoretical economics literature and in public political discourse. In the short run, policymakers frequently use tax policy in attempts to stimulate business investment.

Recent examples include the “bonus depreciation” provisions in place in the U.S. from 2002 to 2004 and 2008 to 2009 and the allowance for full expensing of equipment investment in 2011. Introduction

The relationship between taxation and business decisions is critically examined using some key variables such as profit after tax, company income tax, value-added tax, personal income tax, and deferred tax.

Interpretation/Discussion of Regression Result

A careful analysis of the variations in the dependent variables being profit after tax as above shows that a positive relationship exists between it and some of the exogenous variables such as company income tax, value-added tax, and deferred tax. The importance of these various taxes serving as independent variables is that they affect the decision making power of a business organization.

For instance, CIT was observed to partly enhance business decisions towards the growth of the organization by a value of 0.029, deferred tax with a value of 0.754 respectively in the period under consideration. The other variables (independent variables) observed to negatively affect the business decisions in the organization encompass value-added tax, with a value of -9.015, personal income tax with a value of -0.151 respectively.

Conclusion

The increasing number of taxes levied on firms in Nigeria by the government from time to time, no doubt has a positive effect on economic development. While it increases the economic growth, the impact of such taxes is yet to be empirically established in Nigeria. Hence, this study was undertaken to empirically examine the effect of e taxation on the business decisions in Albabebello Trading Co Ltd, Zaria.

The various taxes used for the study in a view to knowing their effect shows that taxes like company income tax and value add tax positively to the business decision in Albabebello Trading Co Ltd, Zaria.

Recommendations

Based on the findings obtained thus far, the following points are suggested with a view to reducing the negative effect of taxations on the business decisions in companies in Nigeria and all over the world.
