INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background for the Study

Every organisation’s primary purpose is to boost productivity and fulfil organisational goals, which are decided by the workforce’s abilities and competencies. Human resource refers to the total number of available personnel in an organisation. Manpower plays a critical part in the long-term success of any organisation or enterprise.

Manpower is the foundation of all resources used and is the indispensable means of converting other resources to mankind’s use and benefits, so how well we develop and employ human resources skills is fundamental in deciding how much will be accomplished as an organisation and as a nation as a whole;

manpower development and utilisation is of utmost importance to any sector, as it deals with how best to keep employees comfortable in their jobs, up-to-date, resourceful and The preceding is critical considering the nature of human existence in modern times (Ajieh, 2014).

Human resource planning is critical to the achievement of organisational goals. Essentially, manpower planning entails applying the planning process to people resources inside an organisation. According to Ojohwoh (2011), manpower is an essential component of any enterprise, whether it be industrial, commercial, or educational.

According to Onah (2014), the most successful organisations distinguish themselves by how they manage human resources. The importance of people planning is unavoidable

since many businesses have realised that planning is the only way to improve efficiency and ensure work quality. Human resource management is a critical function for both private and public sector organisations.

The process addresses several operational objectives, including recruitment, proper employee training, employee selection, employee assessment, motivating and maintaining a proper relationship with the employee, and ensuring the welfare and health of the organization’s employees through laws enacted by the relevant state and country.

Human resource management works in a variety of areas, including job performance, employee needs and recruitment, pay and salary determination, dispute resolution, and establishing a better working and safety environment for employees (Bowen & Ostroff, 2004).

There is no doubt that in this advanced age of development and technical breakthroughs, manpower must be carefully organised to face the difficulties of contemporary technology. This is a critical component for efficiency and effectiveness in Nigeria Bottling Company PLC.

To support this argument, Bulla and Scot (1994) demonstrated that manpower planning is the process of identifying an organization’s human resource requirements and developing plans to meet those needs.

Schein (1997) observed that the more complex an organisation becomes, the more subject it is to human mistake. Jons, G. (1998) demonstrates that organisations are social inventions built with the intention of achieving some common goals through group effort. They are distinguished by the coordinated engagement of people, not necessarily of objects.

A variety of elements contribute to an organization’s performance, including capital, equipment, and labour. Thus, such organisations need pay close attention in order to attain their goals and objectives. Many organisations in Nigeria have suffered from poor human resource planning, resulting in inefficient operations and overall performance.

 

1.2. Statement of the Research Problem

Many businesses recognise the importance of workforce planning as a critical aspect in increasing productivity. A systematic approach to human resource planning is required to ensure that the organisation has the right people in the right places at the right times to provide high-quality services.

In recent years, it has been seen that a large number of company establishments are underperforming due to a lack of effective and efficient human resources.

Business is full of unpredictability, and understanding labour contribution or human resource development is critical for management, particularly in terms of increasing organisational efficiency and profitability.

The obstacles of a lack of skilled labour, intense competition among enterprises, technological issues, low productivity, to name a few, all contribute to a high rate of poor performance and poor product implementation, while severely limiting product expansion and productivity growth.
