Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study.

Leadership style is one of the components of a successful corporate organisation. As a result, any successful corporate organisation must consider environmental elements as well as leadership styles. Andrew (2010).

Management professionals have given various definitions of leadership. Dubrin (2010) describes it as the process of persuading other individuals to attain specific goals. Belts (2009) claimed that leadership entails making others feel responsible, motivating passion

and positively influencing individual conduct. Mulks (2011) defined leadership simply as getting others to follow or gathering others willingly to do tasks.

Leadership styles can be characterised based on the method a leader takes in dealing with human problems and getting things done (Mbah 2009). Theoretically, leadership styles can be characterised as authoritarian, democratic, or Laisser Faire.

The democratic leader permits subordinates to participate in the decision-making process, but the leader retains the final ability to make decisions without adequate consultation, particularly on sensitive matters.

In the Laisser Faire leadership style, the leader gives employees entire flexibility to make decisions at work (Tyson 2009). This style of leadership is used when there is complete trust in the workforce or when the boss has no confidence in his or her abilities.

The interaction between a leader and individual followers is an important aspect of the leadership process. Previous study has demonstrated that effective interactions between leaders and their followers are critical to a company’s overall operation (Noormela and Syed, 2010).

High-quality leader-follower interactions have been linked to improved employee performance, organisational commitment, delegation, empowerment, and job happiness. This study consequently tries to analyse the effect of leadership styles on an organization’s production.
