DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A WEB-BASED E-POST MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Introduction: 1.1 Background of the Study.

A courier service is an organisation that provides specialised deliveries of products, money, documents, or information. Courier services typically provide faster delivery times than any other means of document transportation, and many modern services rely on them.

The concept of couriers and courier services dates back almost as far as civilization, with ancient kings deploying couriers to spread new laws and edicts across their territories.

Courier services have become a keystone of international commerce in the modern era, despite the fact that developing technology like as the fax machine and the Internet have rendered them less helpful in some areas.

The United Parcel Service (UPS) is the world’s largest courier service, delivering about 12 million goods every day. UPS began as a courier business in the early twentieth century, under the name American Messenger Company.

UPS survived the Great Depression and World Wars, and it continues to prosper in the global age. Over the years, it purchased more courier businesses, including Motorcycle Messengers and a number of smaller European enterprises.

Other well-known global examples of courier services are Federal Express (FedEx) and Dalsey Hillblom Lynn, now Deutsche Post AG (DHL), both of which originated in the early 1970s.

Despite being smaller than UPS, both companies hold significant market share. FedEx is especially well-known for its overnight courier service, which is the first of its type.

DHL began by focusing solely on the route between Honolulu and San Francisco in the United States, but it has since expanded to include the Pacific Rim, Europe, and the Middle East.

Smaller courier services abound, especially in cities. This sort of courier service specialises in transporting small parcels and documents from one point in a city to another as soon as feasible.

Couriers in these organisations frequently ride bicycles or motorcycles to achieve the quickest turnaround times between pickup and delivery.

Indeed, the bicycle messenger, zipping through packed traffic at incredible speeds while carrying a backpack over one shoulder, has come to represent the youthful daredevilry of city life.

The number of bicycle couriers in most cities has declined dramatically in recent years, owing to the rise of more sophisticated communications technologies and fierce pricing competition, but the market remains robust for those who continue to operate.

There is also a form of courier service that uses airline passengers’ excess luggage allowance to transfer documents quickly and easily, with less difficulty, through a country’s customs office.

These courier services provide significantly reduced costs on commercial flights to overseas destinations in exchange for the use of the passenger’s luggage space. The traveller is then provided all of the necessary paperwork, which they simply deliver to the Customs agent at the receiving end.
