Chapter One: Introduction

1.0 Background of the Study

With the growing usage of network computers, the Internet, and advancements in telecommunication technology, e-Learning has gained popularity as a powerful tool for learning and instruction [4].

Some developing countries’ schools continue to rely on traditional higher education methods. With the rapid rise of e-learning, teachers and students are naturally exploring new ways of constructing knowledge [6].

The World Wide Web (WWW) is currently the most heavily investigated educational technology. The WWW, which serves as a platform for information storage and distribution, can be accessible in a very short period of time, which is critical for the educational community.

The fact is that the transition from a digital divide society to a global village information society renders the old instructional model incapable of meeting the instructional needs of contemporary cultures.

The world is undergoing a transition from a static economy to a new knowledge-driven economy. The population boom and increased admission requests to schools in every region of the world put further strain on the resources of various schools.

For example, there is a shortage of people and material resources to support the education of a huge population. In most regions, the population of school-age citizens has increased so dramatically that only a tiny percentage can be admitted [8].

 

A new learning environment must be built that provides autonomy and flexibility, establishes contacts and facilitates communication across cultural and knowledge centres, and allows everyone simple access. A member of a knowledge-based society [9].

In traditional classroom instruction, the lecturer delivers course lectures in a defined location and time. As a result, both the instructor and the student are subjected to time and location constraints.

Due to the human component, the lecturer may not always be able to put out the best effort when preparing and delivering course models. Direct engagement with the student is difficult due to the sheer number of students requiring attention.

The solution appears to be learning strategies based on modern technologies such as the Internet and WWW, mixed with traditional classroom instruction. One method for achieving this is to employ virtual classrooms. An electronic classroom is a virtual learning environment.

It provides the necessary tools for learners and brings instructors and students together to share information and thoughts. The virtual classroom is a unique type of e-learning that finds useful applications in supplementing conventional learning methods.

[5] stated that e-learning can be implemented using a variety of technologies and mediums. [8] suggested a plan for improving online educational institutions for professors and students alike.

The methodology enables more precise assessment and better evaluation of the learning process. The model contains logistics systems to demonstrate the potential need to combine systems for shipping textbooks and other physical items to distance students.

The study in [11] examines the architectural design of an integrated system for delivering lectures in a virtual world. The architecture and component descriptions are offered, together with approaches and advice for implementing the planned system.

1.1 Statement of the Problem

1.2 Design Goals and Objectives

 

The goal of this project is to create a web-based interactive model of an electronic classroom system (e-learning) in which course material is presented using the benefits of multimedia and hypermedia.

To address some of the issues that students in tertiary institutions confront.

To investigate the technological approach of the electronic classroom system (e-learning).

To encourage collaborative learning in which individuals obtain or develop quality information together.
