CHAPITRE ONE

INTRODUCTION

HISTORY OF THE STUDY

The rise in street trade and rape in Edo State’s Oredo Local Government Area cannot be overstated. Any critical observer of Nigerians’ socioeconomic conditions will agree that some people’s living conditions are subpar. It can be seen that the bulk of these street traders are in risk.

For example, female street vendors are commonly victims of rate, which is harmful since forced sexual activity can induce infection, which can cause irreversible damage to her reproductive system. As a result, this research will investigate street selling and rape in Edo State’s Oredo Local Government Area.

Oredo Local Government Area is one of three local government districts that comprise Benin City, the state capital, with its administrative headquarters located at King Square in the city centre. People there are largely solo entrepreneurs, small scale traders, and street vendors, and as such, they cannot afford large scale enterprises, thus they embrace anything that will provide revenue for them and their families. Some instances of street merchants include:

1) Rechargeable card sales

2) Mini-supply kiosks

3) Retail establishments

4) Corn distribution

5) Plantain roasting (i.e. bole), etc.

According to Uwoyo (1995), street dealing is a trade done on a public route in a city, town, or village. Street trading in Oredo Local Government Areas is primarily driven by poverty due to people’s low financial standing and inability to establish larger business businesses that can generate a solid income.

For example, if a commercial motorcyclist, also known as an Okada Rider, has a family of six (six) children and his wife finds it difficult to use the money earned from his Okada business to support his family, he will set up a small sole proprietorship business or give his wife a small sum of money to start a street trade to help the family.

However, according to Nwoyo (2005), street dealing can also be induced by a lack of knowledge, a high birth rate, frustration, and other factors.

According to Okeyo (1998), the following are the main criteria used to describe street trading:

1) It is typically located on roadways.

2) It is typically a solitary proprietorship.

3) Financial stability

4) The value scale

5) Size in relation to initial capital investment

Essentially, as a representation of the developing world’s varied endeavours to chart the road of new economic growth and development, it is also important to recognise the potential; Ogoke (2005) explained that in Nigeria, street dealing forms the largest part of the society trade sector.
