DRUG PROCUREMENT AND INSTITUTION TRACKING SYSTEM

Chapter One:

Introduction

1.1 Background of Study

Computerization refers to using computers and peripherals to control processes. Computers have greatly benefited many processes, businesses, and actions today.

The use of computers to control processes and devices dates back to their development. In the 20th century, inventors attempted to simplify operations through the use of computers. Computerization is widely employed in drug procurement, management, tracking, and delivery processes in hospital pharmacy departments.

The drug procurement and distribution tracking system at the University of Nigerian Teaching Hospital (UNTH) Enugu is a cost-effective and user-friendly computer-based information management system that incorporates data integrity and system security. The database was developed using Microsoft Access software and a visual interface.

Programming language. This project aims to optimise data processing for a hospital’s vast pharmacy department, saving time and resources. This strategy ensures data integrity, redundancy, and consistency.

Drugs are chemical substances supplied to people for treatment and prevention. It’s also referred to as medicine, as it plays a crucial role in patient care.

Computers can store and retrieve information quickly, making them useful in managerial processes. Drug management encompasses drug procurement, delivery, tracking, and information management.

Drug distribution refers to the distribution of pharmaceuticals among a hospital’s medical units or departments, while drug procurement refers to the pharmacy department’s purchasing activities.

Drug tracking involves measuring the quantity of pharmaceuticals in hospitals, pharmacies, warehouses, and stores. It also monitors the stock level.

The pharmaceutical unit of a hospital is responsible for drug management activities.
They are responsible for selecting and using appropriate pharmaceuticals based on an annual, monthly, weekly, or daily list (3).

Management reports. Some hospitals still utilise a manual system for drug management, which can lead to errors due to the difficulty of managing large files in a short amount of time.

This can lead to inaccessible data and misplacement of patient files during drug distribution.

1.2 Statement of Problem

Drug acquisition, tracking, delivery, and information management are common activities in Nigerian hospitals. Routine processes are often performed manually or with minimal computerization, especially at teaching hospitals.

The manual approach to routine operations has several issues, including poor handling of patient data, inadequate storage and information systems for drugs and dispensaries, delays, and difficulty retrieving records.

To address these issues, a computer-based system for managing drug information and tracking delivery is necessary. This research project aims to computerise regular activities in hospitals, namely at UNTH Enugu’s Pharmacy Department.

1.3 GOALS OF THE STUDY

This research project aims to develop and deploy a computerised drug information management, procurement, and distribution tracking system. This involves ordering drugs correctly and not ordering more than necessary.

(ii) Maintain a good stock of medications.

(iii) To avoid the dispensing of outdated medications

(iv). To ensure accurate drug records.

1.4 Significance of the Study

The benefits of this effort include the following:

(i) It will deliver dependable healthcare services.

(ii) It ensures hospital management and patients receive genuine and safe pharmaceuticals.

(iii) It will ensure an efficient and consistent drug dispensing system.

(iv) It will serve as a database for tracking drug inventory at any given time.
