The field of information technology has advanced enormously over the last decade with the introduction of numerous new technologies, like e-commerce, e-learning, e-business, and e-registration, to name a few.

In today technology age of education and industry, information is regarded as a valuable asset for any academic institution. The availability of student data and feedback can assist an educational institution in aligning its business processes with the demands of its students and stakeholders. Effective data management allows universities to reach out directly to students and stakeholders while also streamlining their activities.

Commitments to the success of tertiary education can be demonstrated by innovations such as information updates, continuous enrollment, e-payment, and online student registration. This innovative technique helps to pioneer many of the advantages for students.

Many instances have proved that successful e-businesses understand their target consumers’ demands and match them with relevant content. We live in an age where knowledge is power and content is king.

This phrase is frequently used in regard to any commerce conducted over the internet. People want to have access to an individual’s or corporation’s products and services around the clock.

They also expect dependable, functional, rapid, and user-friendly services, and any company that provides such services has a better success rate.

The advantages of e-business are also felt in academic institutions. It is applicable to online student registration and school fee payment. This technology will, among other things, improve customer service and streamline supply chain management.

This system will have a website that can be browsed with any browser, including Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Chrome.

This project work on the design and implementation of an e-registration system for tertiary institutions is aimed at addressing student issues in a modern manner in order to maintain an effective service delivery system.

Concerns have been made about the manual management of registration and student records, as well as the general goal of increasing registration process efficiency.

E-registration websites can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection; most of these sites are portals. Pena-Lopez (2009) defines a web portal as a site that serves as a point of access to information on the World Wide Web, and portals display information from a variety of sources.

E-registration is a system that may conveniently manage its student population while also delivering other benefits, with the primary purpose of facilitating the transmission of information.

It streamlines the registration procedure using a web-based, user-friendly wizard and digitises all supporting documents utilising simple processes and technologies.

The education system requires a massive amount of data and documentation, and this e-registration solution enables institutions to focus less on paperwork processing and more on what is most important, such as meeting their students’ educational needs, by providing a cost-effective, secure registration process that allows for easy access to student files.

Intranets and portals are intended to provide an infrastructure via which end users can receive effective access to information sources required for daily tasks such as decision making, planning, and research (Brakel, 2003).

Many Nigerian institutions were early to recognise the great revolutionary potential of portals, developing and implementing their own. One such example is the Federal University of Technology portal in Owerri, Nigeria.

In general, one may argue that an institution with growing student populations, functioning in a society with an increasing desire for quick access to information, must carefully investigate new ways to communicate more efficiently with its students (Brown 2000; Twigg and Obinge 1997).

Imo State Polytechnic Umuagwo, like other polytechnics, offers a two-year National Diploma academic programme (ND) and a two-year Higher National Diploma programme (HND). To be admitted to a polytechnic, students must pass the SSSCE/WASSCE examination and meet the minimal entrance standards.
