Dissertations and theses are monographs that aid in scientific communication; however, their primary purpose is to demonstrate that the candidate in an academic organization has the ability to create and direct independent and original research.
The term ‘thesis’ is derived from the Greek word for ‘position,’ and refers to an intellectual proposition. Thesis structure is similar in many countries, but there are different ways for evaluation; however, writing and formatting the thesis will vary depending on the academic organization requirements. As a result, we advise the candidate to first understand and be aware of these requirements (file format, reference style, chapters, tables, figures, and so on).
This chapter provides a thesis writing guide to help final-year and postgraduate students. The components of a thesis are structure, content, and style; in section (2), we will focus on writing standardization, while the style of thesis writing is presented in two sections. Section 3 demonstrated how to write a thesis based on published articles. Section (4) also explains free style writing. Finally, in section (5), discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each style.
2. Writing standardization
Before you begin writing your thesis, there are some important steps you should take, such as organizing your references and creating an outline of your thesis, which you should agree on with your supervisor. Every thesis should be divided into three sections: the introduction, the body text, and the conclusion. Each section has several sections that must be laid out in a specific order. The layout and contents of the thesis should be in the order depicted in the figure (1).
Whereas the beginning of the thesis contains some information beginning with the thesis title that summarizes the idea of your research, a good title contains a few numbers of words that describe the content of study. In general, we can use the following formula to create a thesis title:
[Result]: A [method] study of [topic] among [sample] was conducted.
Declaration In your declaration, you must attest that the thesis is entirely your own work. If the thesis is based on a group project, you must explicitly state your contribution, referencing any other theses submitted or published by each collaborator in the project. Whereas acknowledgment of contributions from others is optional, every effort is made to indicate this clearly, with due reference to the literature, and acknowledgment of collaborative research and discussions.
