THE APPLICATION OF COI IN THE TEACHING OF SOCIAL STUDIES IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS

ABSTRACT

This study was designed to address Nigeria’s decreasing educational standards. To get to the bottom of the problem, an inquiry into the philosophy motivating the development of education was required.

COIP4C is an educational strategy that helps to stimulate children’s cognitive capacity and motivates them to reason. Everyone is an inquirer or philosopher in the P4C technique. The primary purpose of P4C is to pursue truth and clarity of thought. There is no absolute truth, and this way of educating students in the classroom is what will help to connect the missing link in the educational chain, which is reasonableness.

CHAPITRE 1

1. INVESTIGATION

1.1 STUDY BACKGROUND

Education is a nation’s lifeline. It is the driving force behind both economic and social progress. This explains why governments and individuals place such a high value on intellectual progress. There has never been a disagreement on the effectiveness of education in fixing societal problems. Everyone agrees that education is the remedy for eradicating poverty and ignorance.

Similarly, (Babalola (2005:130) stated that education is one of the primary factors influencing economic growth. It instills skills that are useful in the production process.

(Extravagant, manufacturing, engineering, construction, and commercial services). Second, education imparts knowledge of the law, history, medicine, the arts, philosophy, and mathematics.

Third, education imparts work ethics and attitudes towards the creation of commodities and services. Finally, education creates dynamic and innovative human resources.

Given the importance of education in our culture, the question is what kind of education will enable Nigerians to reach new heights? Will we continue to rely on an education that is too passive and rote? Nigerians have reached a point where they require an advanced education system to enable them empower, enlighten, and reinvent themselves. This will be addressed through the COIP4C educational method.

1.2 THE PROBLEM’S STATEMENT

The Nigerian education system is in shambles due to a lack of thinking in the curriculum, which has hampered the country’s economic and social advancement. If implemented, the P4C technique will help to alleviate the dire situation in social studies education.

The Nigerian education system’s difficulties are divided into two stages.

They are as follows:

What to teach dilemma

What to Teach

1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The study’s goal is to educate Nigerians on the importance of transitioning to a more innovative and effective educational system, and its reflective method meets the whole requirement for pushing Nigeria’s educational system ahead.

Among other things, this research endeavour seeks to:

i. Conduct a review of Nigeria’s education system to determine how the traditional pedagogical approach of education has influenced the teaching and learning of social studies in Nigeria.

ii. To demonstrate evidence of mistaken priorities in Nigeria’s response to educational issues.

iii. To assess the teaching profession in order to develop long-term solutions to challenges confronting the teaching profession, such as lowering educational standards, poor academic performance/achievement of pupils/students, teachers’ constant strikes, and cultism in our schools.

iii. Ensuring that the child, as the centre of education, is given the proper place in the educational process.

v. To identify and incorporate the appropriate values into our educational system.

vi. Demonstrate how the learner-centered educational approach can be used to address socioeconomic, political, and cultural concerns in Nigerian education.

1.4 IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY

The study is significant because it will teach Nigerians how to think critically, creatively, compassionately, and jointly in all aspects of life.

The significance of this research is that the findings will be valuable in:

1. Addressing the issue of academic backwardness in social studies classes.

2. It will address the issue of teacher and student motivation in social studies classes.

3. It will address the issue of rote learning and memorising, which does not encourage the learner to think.

4. The research serves as a road map for our social studies course objectives.

5. The research will give a framework for rethinking the social studies curriculum.

6. The study will assist teacher educators in colleges of education in recognising the need of providing adequate training to student teachers in accordance with modern educational approaches.

7. It will assist student teachers in embracing this unique approach of performance/achievement by teaching thinking skills in a community of inquiry framework.

8. It will assist curriculum designers in developing better curriculum for our schools.

9. It will aid in the resolution of cultism and examination malpractice issues in our schools and education system.
