Background of the Study

Academic performance of Nigerian secondary school students has been a thing of worry because it degrading in value day in day out and these have to be as a result of many factors that have been militating against it and all these abstract factors could be uprooted or avoided in order to attain academic excellence through the proper placement of regular and well-planned counseling services in our various secondary schools.

The counselor occupies a very strategic position in most educational systems. The federal government is aware of this. INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Computer education technically in schools has become one of the most fast-growing and far-reaching developments in Nigeria (Okebukola and Ajewole, 1990). The transmission of information and instruction is now bending towards Computer technology. According to Okebukola (1990), the idea of using and studying computers in schools and its gradual acceptance started in late 1960 even though computers have been around much earlier. The computer is conceived as a device or machine designed specially to perform calculations, process data, and store information that can be easily retrieved when required (Aghadino, 1990; Adamu and Bello, 2002).

To Ahore (1990), a computer refers to a device for executing precisely stated rules with accuracy, rapidity, and with great reliability. On his part Adamu (1994), described computer as a machine used by human beings to solve problems. This probably explains the role of computers in processing information for dealing with certain problems confronting humankind. From the foregoing, it is obvious that the computer is a device or machine designed to help process information or data and for storing such information for future use in dealing with problems of daily living. Computer education, on the other hand, Okebukola (1990) described as the learning that can lead to computer literacy.

This implies that the aim of learning and teaching computer science is to make an individual develop the knowledge and skills of computer application or use. Computer science is a learning process in which the individual is taken through the rudiments of using the computer to store and process data/ information accurately and efficiently. The process seeks to equip the individual with skills and knowledge that can make him/her use the computer effectively (Adamu and Bello, 2002).

Anyone who is literate in computer or has received computer education and instruction is expected to tell the computer what he wants it to do and, this according to Gboboniyi (1989), Aghedino (1990), and Adamu and Bello (2002), including the ability to understand what the computer says. They add that to be literate in computer science amounts to be able to read, write, and speak the language of the computer. In the past sixty years or so, computers have migrated from room-size mega boxes to desktops to laptops to our pockets. But the real history of machine-assisted human computation (“computer” originally referred to the person, not the machine) goes back even further. Empirical Studies

The study of Anukan (2004) on a comparison of the achievement of students taught Computer science by Experimental and those taught Computer science by Traditional approaches such as the Conventional used of lecture methods. The purpose of the study was to determine the level of awareness of senior secondary school students on double-entry principles of computer science, the effect of teaching double-entry principles of computer science by experimental instructional approach, and the traditional approach to student retention ability.

The population for that study was 100 Computer science students in four (4) public secondary schools and the same number of students were taken as sample size and they were of the same social-economic background, admission and promotion policy, and the same public secondary schools.

The population of the study consisted of the senior computer science teachers in all the secondary schools in Benin LGA of Edo State where students offer computer science and are registered for the SSE Examination for at least the immediate past five years. A descriptive method was adopted in order to observe, with the use of a scale, the perception/rating of the respondents towards the problems facing teaching and learning of computer science in secondary schools. RESEARCH FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

Table 1 indicates that most parents have been affected by their misconceptions about the operation of free education. Free education has not covered the costs of secondary education at 100 percent. Parents/guardians still need to provide textbooks, study materials, writing materials, uniforms, and boarding to mention a few. Eight problems are ranked as “Highly Accepted”, six as “Accepted” and four as “Rejected”.

The respondents’ perception/rating of the problem tends to be uniform; since there is a significantly positive relationship between the mean response ranking and coefficient of homogeneity ranking. Another problem of attention is that students are not adequately prepared for examinations. This problem implied that there are inadequate qualified and experience teachers and neglect of responsibility on the part of teachers.

The rating of inadequate and qualified teachers and neglect of responsibility on the part of teachers were very low and probably out of sentiments. The low rating of inadequate qualified and experienced teachers is not in agreement with Olodi (2000) that reported NCE teaching the SSS classes because of the inadequacy of qualified and experienced teachers in vocational education.

Also, the result does not lend any credence to Azikiwe (1993) and Dosumu (1982) who supported the inadequacy of vocational education teachers as a serious problem confronting vocational education in Nigeria… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

The study has successfully identified some problems encountered in teaching and learning computer science in secondary schools. The goals of vocational education at this level via the knowledge of computer science and the competencies required for successful entrepreneurship and self-reliance may not be met if these problems are not well addressed by the concerned-the government, parents, teachers, and the students. The solutions proffered in this study are the basis of the conclusion made:

In line with the findings of this study, the researcher recommends the following:

Schools should provide enough audio and visuals to enable teachers to clarify their lessons. Adequate infrastructure facilities and conclusive atmosphere are Sine Qua Non for effective learning and retention of what is learned.

• Schools should send their Computer science language teachers to seminars and workshops in order to update their knowledge.

The Mbaise area became a British colonial administrative unit in the early years of the twentieth century. It is situated in the very heartland ofIgboland.  THE PRE-COLONIAL MBAISE SOCIETY

Introduction

This chapter is meant to explain the nature of the Mbaise community before its subjection to British rule, which began by the visit of the Aro-field Force in 1901. Nothing is more repugnant to an historian than to describe a society as if it were a temporal vacuum.

Every society has been and is still in a state of flux, hence they undergo constant changes. According to Isichei, historians focus on changes rather than continuity. But we cannot neatly separate continuities from change because change itself is a continuous phenomenon in human society.

The Political System In Mbaise Prior To 1903

Before the British intervention in the political affairs of the Igbo, the communities that transformed into what much later became known as Mbaise, the people had evolved their own method of governance, just like other Igbo communities. This pattern of government was said to be democratic and gerontocratic.

The history of Mbaise before the imposition of colonial rule which began in 1903-4 can be more than just a collection of their political history. It should also be possible to have a historical perspective embracing the economic aspect of the people’s history.

Crop Production

The staples produced in the area include yam, cocoyam, cassava and vegetables. The soil in Mbaise was not so fertile as to enhance surplus production, coupled with the fact that preservation mechanisms were still not developed. Consequently, they produced enough to take them through the year.

Apart from the tuba crops and vegetable mentioned above, palm products were produced in the area beyond subsistent level.  ESTABLISHMENT OF BRITISH RULE IN MBAISE 1902–1916

British Military Occupation Of Mbaise 1902-1916

This pronouncement made in the Gazette was a brainchild of what can properly be referred to as politico-economic agreement entered into by the colonizing powers of Europe, during a historic conference convened in Berlin in 1885. The conference was convened by the colonizing powers of Europe to prevent major conflicts, which were most likely to occur from the aggressive acquisition of African territories.

The general act of this epoch-making conference provided that the navigation of the Niger was to be free for the ships of all nations. Britain assumed a very cumbersome obligation of ensuring a hitch free movement of foreign merchants by indorsing this act.

Another international issue that was decisive to the conquest of interiors of the area, which became eastern provinces, was the Brussels Conference. This conference was most significant for providing the basis for the overthrow of the indigenous system of government across the frontiers of the coastal area, into the interior.

 INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

The construction of dam and reservoir projects plays an important role in the development of Nigeria’s hydropower and the regulation of water resources. However, it also makes a profound effect on the regional ecological environment. It has become the key issue of dam and reservoir projects on how to coordinate the relationship between construction and environmental protection, and to realize their harmony development [1].

Statement of the problem

Earth Dam construction can lead to health effects ranging from respiratory problems to mental disorders. Studies in Tanzania revealed that symptoms of heavy metal poisoning such as sensory disturbance, tremor, gingivitis, metallic taste, neurasthenia, and night blindness are common (6).

In the last five years, studies on the environmental impact of dam construction and processing in Sagamu (Sagamu – Ogun State, Nigeria) have revealed a declining kola nut output from the plantations within a few kilometers radius of the cement factory (5)..  Research Objectives

This study was undertaken majorly to examine the environmental impact assessment of Dam construction in areas.

 LITERATURE REVIEW

EIPA of earth dam and reservoir project mainly focuses on water temperature, aquatic livings, terrestrial livings, hydrological regime, environmental geology, landscape and heritage, and the resettlement of migrants from the reservoir.

Water Temperature

The constructed earth dam and reservoir on the river greatly change the hydrological processes and hydraulic conditions of the river, and also modify the thermodynamic state of the river, which thus change the water temperature. The typical water temperature effect of the reservoir is the vertical thermal stratification. [4]

The water temperature of EIPA mainly include: (1) analyzing the vertical and horizontal distribution of the measured data on water temperature in different areas of the reservoir, and investigate the effects of discharged water temperature on aquatic livings and crops growth [3]; (2) Comparing the measured and predicted values of the discharged water temperature along the river each month; (3) assessing the applicability of experience formulas and predicting models on water temperature.

Aquatic livings

The impact of earth dam and reservoir projects on aquatic livings focus on the effects on fishes. The earth dam blocking has a serious impact on migratory fishes due to destroying and disturbing their spawning, breeding, and their habitats, which force the fishes from the river water gradually transform into the lake fishes, and make some environment-sensitively fish species be endangered. Therefore, the number and types of fishes will change, which impact remarkable local fisheries. [5,6]

Landscape and Heritage

Natural landscape and heritage might be submerged, destroyed, or disturbed by the dam and reservoir project; meanwhile, the reservoir might add the new landscape.

The environmental impact post-assessment mainly include: investigating the natural landscape and heritage to be affected, analyzing and evaluating the efficiency of protective measures, and putting forward the better measures for further utilizing heritage landscape.

Migrants 

Earth Dam and reservoir development will have an important influence on resettlement from the reservoir area, which is the direct influence on regional society and the economy. The migration of the population is caused by project land and reservoir flooding. And the damage of arable lands, houses, infrastructure will directly impact the migrants’ production and living. [5]

The environmental impact post-assessment dominantly focuses on the resettlement of migrants, which is one of the important measures to ensure the development of the social economy of migrants without great effects of the project. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has developed into a universal tool for planning and has become mandatory, in some form or the other, in all industrialized countries. Although viewed as a useful tool in improving planning decisions, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has been much criticized for the subjective judgments in these evaluations (that are difficult to quantify) and lack of transparency. To overcome these drawbacks the Rapid Impact Assessment Matrix (RIAM) was developed. It provides a holistic investigation covering four categories of environmental issues:

• physical and chemical issues
• biological and ecological issues
• sociological and cultural issues
• economic and operational issues

The approach requires a scoping exercise to determine the important environmental components in each of the four categories, and allows for decisions on these components to be made and recorded, by assessing the beneficial or negative impacts against defined criteria and scales. RESEARCH FINDINGS AND DISCUSSIONS

Assessment Process:

To understand the Assessment process we take an example of the impact of the earth dam on Groundwater status. It is important to the area immediately outside the local condition (A1=2). It significantly improves the status

quo (A2=+2).This change is Permanent as the long life of the earth dam (B1=3). This change is irreversible until the dam exists (B2=+3). There is single change in factor (B3=2).and its Environmental score is 32 (ES=32). According to Table 2 the Range Value (AlphabeticalLV³&´ and Range Value (NumericalLV³´

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Conclusion 

The working condition of the earth dam workers has not been taken care of as recommended by the Occupational Safety and Health Act. This can be attributed to a lack of awareness on the use of protective gear by the dam workers. Poor planning within the Kaduna state has led to the rapid development of residential facilities near the protected areas such as dam sites and railway lines.

Earth Dam companies should be mandated to adopt modern technology of dust strapping such that a negligible quantity of dust escapes from the various operations at the earth dam site.  Recommendations

• The Government of Nigeria should ensure that the laws governing the dam construction and earth dam industries are observed through enhanced surveillance.

Abstract

The second most common cause of mortality in children less than five is diarrhoea, which is defined as passing three or more loose or liquid stools in a 24-hour period. Keep in mind that infants who are still nursing do not have diarrhoea or the passing of loose or “pasty” faeces very often. Most cases of diarrhoea occur as a result of an infection in the intestines. Many different types of bacteria, viruses, and parasites may cause diarrhoea. Symptoms of diarrhoea include a change in bowel habits (loose and watery stool), fever, cramping in the abdomen, nausea, bloating, lightheadedness, and dizziness. The disease may be transmitted from person to person or by contaminated food and water. Age, medicine, environment, compromised immune system, lack of vaccination, and intimate contact with sick individuals are some of the risk factors. Dehydration and electrolyte loss might worsen without treatment for diarrhoea. Avoiding open defecation, keeping toilets clean, and practicing good sanitation are all ways to reduce the likelihood of diarrhoea. Aside from eating well and getting a vaccine, which strengthens our immune systems and wards off diarrhoea, washing our hands often is also crucial in avoiding this illness. Proper breastfeeding also aids in preventing diarrhoea and boosts the immune system, according to studies. The fact that this illness disproportionately affects underdeveloped nations is sad, but putting the aforementioned strategies into action can significantly cut down on cases of diarrhoea, particularly in children.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the study

Worldwide, around 525,000 children under the age of five lose their lives each year to diarrhoeal illness. Even without the water and electrolytes the body needs to survive, diarrhoea may linger for days. Death from diarrhoea used to be mostly caused by severe dehydration and fluid loss. WHO (2017).

A person is said to be experiencing diarrhoea if they pass three or more liquid stools per day, or more fluids than what is considered usual for them. Frequent passing of solid waste is not the same as diarrhoea. Of the 10.6 million deaths that occur in children less than 5 years old globally, around 42% take place in African areas (Bryce.et.al 2005).

Worldwide, the infant mortality rate in Africa is seven times greater than in Europe in 2005, according to the World Health Organisation. The HIV/AIDS epidemic is one possible cause of this (walker et al. 2007).

Regardless, despite advancements in healthcare technology, better management, and the increased use of oral rehydration therapy (O.R.T.) in recent decades, diarrhoea disease is still one of the leading causes of death among children younger than five years old.As stated by Kosek et al. (2006).

The most common causes of acute diarrhoea are gastrointestinal parasites (Giardia), viruses (such as norovirus or rotavirus), or bacteria (such as Salmonella). Gastrointeritis is the medical term for diarrhoea brought on by any of these illnesses. Gluten sensitivity (such as coeliac disease) and lactose intolerance (the inability to properly digest lactose in dairy products) are the most prevalent causes of acute diarrhoea. It is easy to identify diarrhoea based on its symptoms. Diarrhoea that persists for more than two or three days together with other symptoms like fever or blood in the stool may prompt a doctor to order diagnostic tests to rule out infection or other diseases.Colonoscopy or Sigmoidoscopy, which include examining the intestines using a thin, flexible tube that has a camera and light attached to it, can detect symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease.Rapid dehydration, defined as the excessive loss of fluid from the body, may occur in cases of chronic or severe diarrhoea. Particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of dehydration are young children, the elderly, those with compromised immune systems (such as those living with HIV/AIDS or undergoing chemotherapy), and those with weakened systems overall. Children under the age of five in underdeveloped nations had an average of three episodes per year, with some regions reporting as many as six or eight episodes per kid.in such a context, and since diarrhoea is already associated with malnutrition, having it again and again stunts development and greatly increases the likelihood of death (Talbert et al., 2012).Because oral rehydration solutions are so common, the number of deaths in children caused by diarrhoea has been steadily decreasing over the last 20 years. Nevertheless, there is reason to be hopeful for the near future: the general frequency of diarrhoea episodes has plateaued over the last few years, thanks to the rotavirus vaccination, which has been in use for three years (WHO 2010).

1.2 Statement of the problem

Infectious diarrhoea often affects both sexes equally. Carmpylodrome (HUS) is more common in females. The majority of cases of viral diarrhoea occur in children under the age of two, with rotavirus and adenovirus being the most frequent in this age group.Children under the age of five are more likely to get the astrovirus and norovirus.Children less than one year old are most often infected with Yersina entercolitis, and the Aeromonas organisms are a major source of diarrhoea in this age group. Subsequent dehydration and malabsorption of nutrients may occur in infants and toddlers. The intensity and length of the diarrhoea seem to be mainly affected by the host’s age and nutritional state. Young children are more likely to experience dangerous levels of dehydration due to their rapid bodily water turnover and impaired renal compensatory ability. The question of whether younger or older people bear the danger of a prolonged course remains unresolved. There is a robust age-related negative connection between chronic postenteritis diarrhoea and poor country status (lubbert et al 2012).

1.3 Objectives of the study

In order to provide comprehensive nursing care to a patient at the Buea road integrated centre who is experiencing diarrhoea

1. To evaluate and treat people suffering from acute diarrhoea.

2. To administer this treatment and assess its efficacy.

1.4 Significance of the study

This research effort will raise awareness about the best way to treat diarrhoea in children. The Ministry of Public Health will be able to refocus their policies with the support of this effort, making childhood diarrhoea control a higher priority.

Treatment, prevention, and suggestions for better care for diarrhoea will be based on the findings of this research.So that others might gain insight and maybe use some of my tactics for dealing with diarrhoea, I will relate my story.

1.5 Definition of terms

ELECTROLYTES: This are electrical substances in the blood that helps to regulate the proper balance of body fluids.

DIARRHEA: This is the frequent passage of 3 or more loose of liquid stools per day (W.H.O 2017).

STOOLS: This are solid matters discharged in bowel movements. Stools are made up of undigested food, bacterial, mucus, and cells from the lining of the intestines.

MORBIDITY: This is how often a disease occurs in a specific area or is a term use to describe a focus on death.

DEHYDRATION: This is the excessive loss of body fluids more than what someone can take in.

BOWEL: This is a long tube that carries solid wastes from the stomach out of the body.

EPISODE: This is a related event or group of related events.

NUTRITION: This is the intake of food, considered in relation to the body’s dietary need (W.H.O 2013).

INFECTION: The invasion and multiplication of microorganism such as bacterial, viruses, and parasites that is not normally present in the body. Royal college of nursing (RCN 2006)

BACTERIALS; A single cell organism that can exist independently (free living) organism or as parasites (dependent on another organism for life).

VIRUS; A microorganism that is smaller than a bacterial but cannot grow or replicate out of living cells.

VACCINATION: Injection of an attenuated microbe in order to stimulate the immune system against the microbe thereby preventing disease vaccination or immunization work by stimulating the immune system.

COMPLICATION: An unanticipated problem that arises following the result of a procedure, treatment and illness.
