STRATEGIES FOR MOTIVATING STAFF FOR IMPROVED PRODUCTIVITY IN BUSINESS ORGANISATION

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND FOR THE STUDY

1.0 Introduction

According to Robinson (2004), all organisations are concerned with what should be done to attain sustained high levels of performance through their employees.

As a result of the numerous attempts made by management practitioners, the subject of adequate worker motivation is to find the best approach to manage in order to achieve an aim or mission with the least amount of material and human resources available.

Many theoretical concepts, ideas, and management strategies have evolved in response to these issues. In general, management authors viewed motivation as an important aspect of the managerial role of leading or directing.

However, leading or leadership style, while significant in determining employees’ attitudes towards assigned job obligations, is not the only determinant; other managerial functions such as planning, controlling, staffing, and organising also play a role.

Certain difficulties of inadequate motivation do exist in many corporate organisations; these problems of inadequate motivation can be classified into two types. For starters, some people’s failure to feel driven may be due to a personality flaw.

For such people, the desire to avoid failure may be too great, while the drive to produce positive results may be too weak to serve as a motivator for achievement-oriented behaviour.

Second, even when the achievement motive is relatively strong, the challenges that the individual worker faces may be insufficient or too difficult, and either of these will usually manifest themselves in different ways, such as a lack of enthusiasm or premature surrender.

Money just serves as the common denominator of all things. There is a widespread belief that if management can uncover alternative motivators for the workforce outside money, there will be a significant drop in worker demand for pay increases.

Management/workers union negotiating meetings will take up less time each year. Employees may join a company because of its rich pay scale or lucrative benefits package, but their length of stay and productivity are largely driven by their connection with their immediate supervisor rather than their pay satisfaction.

1.1 Statement of Problem

Many business organisations in Nigeria do not effectively encourage their employees in terms of cash compensation or the provision of conducive working environments.

Furthermore, low motivation may lead to frustration, which can present itself in a variety of ways among employees. Low productivity and casual attitudes towards work are two examples.

Employees are disinterested in their jobs because they are under-motivated. This circumstance may result in a general resistance to achievement-oriented behaviour, which should be countered by inspiring the business organization’s workers.

In light of these issues, this research study investigates techniques for encouraging employees to increase productivity in commercial organisations.
