Chapter One
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Water has been identified as being extremely important to human survival. A consistent supply of clean, hygienic water is critical in promoting healthy living among the residents of a well-defined geographical region (Mustapha and Adam, 1999).
In an attempt to find a solution to the water problem, it was estimated that 1.2 billion people worldwide do not have access to clean, safe water, and around 2.5 billion people do not have proper sanitation (Third World Water Forum, 2003).
The majority of those who lack access to clean safe water and adequate sanitation live in poor nations since the normal industrialised global model for safe water supply and sanitation technologies is prohibitively expensive (Gadgil and Derby, 2003).
1.2 Statement of the research problem
In Nigeria, public drinking water supply or provision is unreliable (Egwari and Aboaba, 2002). As a result, Nigerians’ well-being has suffered, particularly during the dry season. Ground water and piped (tap) water are Nigeria’s primary drinking water sources.
These sources are considered unsafe sources of drinking water because studies have shown that ground water sources include trace elements, dissolved solids, and microorganisms in excess amounts that may be harmful to people’s health.
As a result, most investigations conducted on ground water samples from various parts of Nigeria revealed that the majority of available water sources or water types are polluted or contaminated, rendering them unfit for drinking (Ogunbanjo, 2004 and Tijani, 2003), as cited in Olaposi’s (2009) unpublished PhD thesis.
Physical examination of many publicly supplied pipe-borne water samples also revealed their poor quality. In Nigeria, drinking water sold in polythene sachets and plastic bottles is one example of a locally developed alternative to safe water provision.
There have been few studies on the influence of clean water production on Nigeria’s economy in terms of job creation, revenue generation, and wealth development, which is why this study was conducted.
1.3 Objectives Of The Study
The overall goal of this research is to evaluate the impact of clean water production on the Nigerian economy, with a focus on Nnewi North L.G.A in Anambra State.
The specific goals are to:
i. Examine how pure water production has favourably influenced the Nigerian economy.
ii. Evaluate the extent to which clean water production has generated income.
1.4 Research Questions
i.What impact does pure production have on Nigeria’s economy?
ii. Has the manufacturing of pure water generated income in Nigeria?
1.5 Statement of the research hypothesis.
This research would be led by the following hypothesis.
1. The generation of pure water has had no positive impact on Nigeria’s economy.
Hi. Pure water production has a positive impact on the Nigerian economy.
2 Ho. Purified water production does not contribute to Nigeria’s economic progress.
Hi. Pure water production contributes to Nigeria’s economic prosperity.
1.6 Scope Of The Study
To investigate the influence of pure water production on the Nigerian economy, pure water should be produced in sanitary conditions that meet the standards set by bodies such as NAFDAC.
1.7 Significance of the Study
Most researchers in Nigeria have not taken the time to document the nature, production techniques, and processes involved in pure water production, as well as the influence of pure water production on Nigeria’s economy, which is why this study was conducted.
The researcher investigated the influence of pure water production on the Nigerian economy, which included the creation of jobs, the availability of clean and treated water, and other factors.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
Certain issues may impair the study’s accuracy and dependability. Factors include the following:
i. Difficulty in gathering data
ii. Individual parties provided a low response rate.
