DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A COMPUTER BASED WAREHOUSING INFORMATION SYSTEM

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

A warehouse is where items and commodities are stored for later clearance. Regarding the Nigeria Ports Authority, there are numerous warehouses where imported consignments and merchandise are held. This is accomplished by taking the billing papers from post to post, waiting, and wasting time determining who is in charge.

Goods that take around two weeks to arrive in the country take another two weeks to clear. This causes importers and clearing agencies to rush from port to port in search of where the products are stored.

The use of computers in warehousing will allow importers to know which and where their goods are stored, as this will always be stated on the bill of lading documents.

A computer is defined here as a method of processing things by systematically organising them, documenting or noting them, and then taking suitable action.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Billing documents for goods clearance have been processed manually, resulting in the exclusion of several records that should have been included. This is due to error in the manual billing procedure.

Due to inefficiencies in the manual billing procedure, billing documents are moved from post to post, waiting for who is in control, delaying the delivery of products.

Furthermore, commodities are not delivered on time since they take around two weeks to enter the country and another two weeks to clear.

1.3 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The objective of this study is to

Identify the problems created by manual billing clearance.

Finding out the impact of this in Nigeria Ports Authority

Create computer awareness.

Identify possible solutions to problems.

Significance of the Study

This research, which is based on the problem and prospects of employing computers in the Nigeria Ports Authority, would help to increase interest in computers.

The outcomes of this study would also assist management in increasing Nigeria Ports Authority revenue and ensuring the smooth operation of the warehouse in general.

1.5 Scope of the Study

The researcher will uncover all of the challenges, including the financial limits, associated with manual billing clearing in warehousing.

1.6 Limitations of the Study

Due to funding constraints and a lack of time, the researcher is focussing the investigation just on Nigeria Ports Authority Lagos.
