CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The concept of business social responsibility has evolved and expanded. Currently, the adequate and effective use of resources to maximise profits is regarded as the core social duty of commercial organisations.

Corporate social responsibility originated in the early twentieth century. Interestingly, and fortunately, it began with company executives who believed that firms had a commitment to use their resources in ways that benefited the entire community.

Nonetheless, the role of business firms is to provide goods and services for a profit. Social expectations of business have grown to the point where social attention is required to close the gap between expectations and responses and keep business in sync with society.

An organisation concerned with creating its goals, objectives, and implementing strategies to achieve its stated aims should also recognise the reality that it must function in such a way that it does not affect the environment.

Furthermore, this issue is critical to corporate organisations since, if properly maintained, it results in positive relationships between the organisation and society.

Given the aforementioned, a research focused on Guinness Nigeria, Plc can be considered as an excellent case because it is one of the country’s most significant and well-known corporations.

The corporation celebrated its Golden Jubilee (50th anniversary) in 2002. It is now evident that it has existed for 56 years. Nigeria, and the demand for its products, has undoubtedly grown and remained continuously strong throughout the years.

This company specialises in the production of small and large Guinness stouts, Harp, Malta Guinness, extra smooth, and Gordonspark. The company has branches across the country.

Since the early 1970s, specifically 1974, when its first manufacturing plant was created at Ikpoba scope in Benin city, the company has continued to grow and is still the most dominating and prominent corporation in the brewing industry.

Statement of the Problem

The majority of Nigerian commercial organisations have demonstrated little interest in social responsibility. At the moment, many Nigerian businessmen have a somewhat nonchalant approach towards social duty.

Nowadays, this view has led to conflicts, particularly in this era when a growing number of people believe that collaboration between people and organisations is necessary. This will improve the seamless operation of businesses and ensure maximum support from society.

To get the most support from society, organisations must implement the following strategies: community education, the establishment of public health care facilities, and the employment of local residents.

They should also participate in environmental protection activities and consider the well-being of the general public. This problem of corporate social responsibility is addressed within the context of this research, with a focus on Guinness Nigeria plc Aba.

The corporation is continuously maximising earnings, but little effort has been made to strike a balance between welfare and profitability.

Guinness Nigeria must strike a balance between its profit-maximizing efforts and community welfare. In view of the foregoing, this study seeks to establish the extent to which Guinness Nigeria Plc Aba has been socially accountable to the needs of the community.

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

An organization’s social obligations do not conflict with its economic tasks or aims; rather, they foster a very friendly relationship with the community in which it operates.

Therefore, the fundamental aim of this study is to establish how far commercial organisations, specifically Guinness Nigeria plc Aba, have been able to carry out these obligations while also meeting goals and objectives.

In this regard, the study’s aims are as follows.

To determine the extent to which Guinness Nigeria plc Aba participates in social responsibility projects.

Identify the intended role in the area.

Determine the impact of the company’s social duties on society.

To determine the public impression, opinion, and perception of the company.
