CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF STUDY

The nation’s economic development is gradually assuming a new form as a result of women’s participation in the mainstream of politics and social-economic development, and the realization that strong and variable economics cannot exist without women’s participation.

Women’s participation in the mainstream of the development process is a recent phenomenon; twenty years ago, only men remained and were forced to carry out the majority of development activities without recognition.

Given the favorable climate created by the government, women’s organizations are sprouting up in every corner of the country. This organization ranges from an age-based farmers union organization to a co-operative market union to a better life and all purposes form for rural women.

The United Nations (1997) defined economic development as a process by which the real per capita income rises over time as a result of changes in the quality of productive factors involved in the growth process.

In a broader context, development could be defined as a dynamic process involving the interaction between a country’s people and their environment.

In this study, however, community development could be viewed as the movement designed to promote a better standard of living for the entire community through the initiative of the community.

The United Nations concluded that the element of community development is the process by which the effects of the people themselves are combined with those of the governing authorities in order to improve the social, economic, and cultural condition of the community.

The development of community development in the local government area established a number of women-reaching programs. In addition to the department’s resentment for the trained field staff, who are frequently responsible for the mobilization of women folk, a permanent feature is the department’s establishment of specialized women’s centers in every city and village to address women-specific issues.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS

The statement of problems of this study is, therefore, to determine what constitutes the role of women in community development, specifically in the Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, and to assess the extent to which the problem of sending adequate staffs to the rural area hinders the mobilization of the Oredo Local Government Area.

RESEARCH QUESTION

This study aims to investigate the extent to which women participate in community development.

What challenges do women face when it comes to community development?

What is the nature of women’s involvement in community development?

Is there a natural role for women in community development?

4. What benefits do women receive from community development?

How far has the development of women in the Redo Local Government Area of Edo State progressed?

What function do these women play within their organization?

Have these women adequate resources for community development?

PURPOSE OF STUDY

The objective of this study is to identify and assess the actual survey of women’s roles in community development in the Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. And to identify the nature of women and their benefits in alternative approaches to enhancing the current system.

The roles that positively impact the social, economic, and cultural lives of Oredo Local Government Area residents. And the contribution of women has alleviated the poor state of the people by contributing to the building of a skills acquisition centre and educating the illiterate people in community development, that is by launching a mass literacy campaign and convincing the people of the need to participate in the development of the people.

Lastly, in all socio-cultural activities that promote unity and cultural understanding among citizens, thereby enhancing the existing system of the people.

SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

The significance of this research is to examine the role of women in community development and its positive impact on the socioeconomic development of all sectors in the Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.

The contribution they have made to upholding the norms and values of the community’s inhabitants.

In identifying the background and segment of women in community development, this system also encourages the introduction of new ideas.

In addition, this aids in examining the specifics of ethical corrections that aid in shaping the character of citizens in the Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.

SCOPE OF THE RESEARCH

The scope of this study is limited to a survey of women’s roles in community development in Edo State’s Oredo Local Government Area.

However, data and information were gathered via questionnaires and structured interviews with other bodies (associations) affiliated with the Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.

This study’s influences and generalization are associated with women’s associations in the Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

A community is a group of people who share a common religion, race, or occupation and interact with one another.

In a broader context, development is viewed as a dynamic process involving the ongoing interaction between people and their environment.

Community development IS a structured intervention that empowers communities to exert greater influence over the conditions that affect their lives.

Economic development is the process by which an economy’s real per capita income rises.

Association: The coming together of a group of individuals with a common goal, such as teachers and lecturers, accountants and bankers.

Women’s participation in society, such as cooking, watching, farming, and working, as well as all other female contributions to society.

Society is a large group of people who share the same laws, organization, and customs that allow them to coexist.

A group, such as a club or business, that has been formed for a specific purpose.
