ABSTRACT
The research focusses on cooperative societies as a tool for enhancing cassava output in Nigeria. A case study of the Arondinzuogu Local Government Area was conducted to survey the government’s previous programmes and policies aimed at mobilising peasant farmers into agricultural cooperatives and functional ones for increased production as a means of facilitating the country’s attainment of self-sufficiency in agricultural productivity. The general constraints affecting the fulfilment of the target in Imo State Local Government Area were identified. These include poorly designed and inefficient extension services, insufficient farm storage facilities and organised marketing outlets, the use of crude farming implements, a complex land tenure system, and no membership restrictions, which may attract people of questionable character and lead to the society’s demise, among other things.
