IMPACT OF MASS MEDIA ON THE COVERAGE OF GOVERNMENT PROGRAMMES IN OSUN STATE NIGERIA

Abstract

The study examines the impact of mass media on the coverage of government programs in Osun State, using the Osun State Broadcasting Corporation (OSBC) as a case study. Over the years, the mass media has played an important role in Nigeria’s sociopolitical and economic development.

Because of the power they wield and the oversight function they perform, the media are frequently referred to as the fourth estate of the realm. The media has been recognized as a major player in democratic governance and development since the late 17th century and remains a fundamental principle of modern-day democratic theory and practice,

particularly in educating, enlightening, and mobilizing electorates before, during, and after elections. Furthermore, the media, for example, has exposed mismanagement in high office, resulting in the resignation or toppling of heads of state and the implementation of governance reforms.

The researcher used a survey research method with 100 copies of questionnaires distributed to selected respondents within OSBC. It is safe to conclude that the mass media have an impact on disseminating government programs and policies to the people in society.

The news media act as a go-between for the government and the people it governs. Democracy cannot exist in the absence of the press because democracy is based on popular will, and popular opinion is dependent on public awareness and knowledge; it is the mass media that raises, promotes, and propagates public awareness.

It advocated for more mass media, particularly privately owned media that can criticize the government, as opposed to the cowardly state media, which will never bite the hands that feed it. Newspapers should be free of the influence of a few powerful politicians in order to avoid the paper becoming a tool of propaganda, as is the case in Nigeria.
