Chapter 1: Designing and Implementing an Airline Flight Information System (1.0 Introduction) Everything that is sustainable must, by definition, progress. In science and technology, the drive for better is a perpetual motivator for progress. This is evident in every ramification, and the airline business is no exception.

Previously, airline flight information systems (ARS) were separate systems. Each airline had its own system, which was unconnected from other airlines and ticket brokers and could only be used by a limited number of airline personnel. In the 1970s, travel agencies campaigned for access to airline systems.

Today, a network of Computer Reservation Systems (CRS) connects, stores, and retrieves air travel information, which is accessible to numerous airlines and travel agents.

The global distribution system (GDS) consolidates airline information and facilitates direct access for consumers. GDS portals and gateways on the Web enable customers to buy tickets directly, select seats, and even book hotels and rental vehicles.(Winston, Clifford. 1995).

Aviation jobs are well-known in Hitech. Many aviation occupations are made available by airline companies and airport authorities. Aviation jobs are among the few in Nigeria that pay competitively with their foreign counterparts.

With the current aviation security measures, aviation recruitments are being handled with great care. Airline operators are taking their screening operations more seriously than before.

This is because any form of wrongdoing or insecurity may result in their licence being revoked. Most graduates are hired through internships, which are frequently offered on this website.

These positions remain highly competitive, with people rushing to apply whenever they become available. Graduates have the opportunity to get hired through “Hosts” recruitments, where airline operators hire people to serve within the aircraft. 1.1 Background of Study
Air Nigeria, originally Nigerian Eagle Airlines and Virgin Nigeria Airways, is Nigeria’s official flag carrier. The airline provides scheduled regional and domestic passenger travel.

It is based at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos. The airline is a substitute for the defunct Nigeria Airways. Its registered office is in Ikoyi, Lagos State, and its headquarters are on the ninth floor of Etiebets Place in Ikeja, Lagos State.

The carrier’s loyalty programme is known as ‘Eagleflier’. On September 28, 2004, the Nigerian government and Virgin Group agreed to form a new airline called Virgin Nigeria Airways. Nigerian institutional investors own 51% of the corporation, while Virgin Atlantic Airways owns 49%.

On June 28, 2005, the airline made its debut flight from Lagos to London Heathrow with an Airbus A340-300 aircraft. Virgin Nigeria has now grown to become one of Nigeria’s largest airlines, carrying its 1,000,000th passenger and 4,000th tonne of airline cargo in just two years of business.

The airline has also earned awards, including THISDAY Awards 2006 Airline of the Year and ASATA’s 2006 African Airline of the Year nomination.[3] Virgin Nigeria planned to make Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja its second base, in addition to Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos, from which it would serve all West African countries.

In an effort to improve services and safety, the Nigerian government set a deadline of April 30, 2007, for all airlines operating in the country to re-capitalize or be grounded. The airline met the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority’s (NCAA) re-capitalization standards and was re-registered to operate.

Aviation jobs in Nigeria are certainly rare. They are regarded as highly qualified and technical positions. Many aviation vocations include captains, air hosts/hostesses, aviation repair engineers, aviation security guards, traffic and movement controllers, and so on.

1.2 Statement of the Problem Airline management in Nigeria has always drawn low patronage due to systemic failures. Loss of client goods is a common occurrence, with plausible explanations.

Clients have little choice but to rely on error-prone manual techniques in airline management. The company’s way of storing information is bad. This limits the quantity of official documents available to customers because the system is incapable of managing outdated bits of information that a customer may require at any time.

Customers’ goods, documents, and classified information are vulnerable to unauthorised access due to a lack of security controls.

1.3 PURPOSES OF THE STUDY

This project aims to highlight the relevance and significance of airline flight information systems (AFIS). It is expected that the usage of ARSs will improve the interaction between customers and airline agencies, easing the flight ticketing and selling procedure as well as all air travel operations.

1.4 LIMITATIONS. The project’s scope is limited to an ONLINE AIRLINE RESERVATION PORTAL FOR TRAVEL SERVICE

PROVIDERS. During the course of this investigation, certain forces attempted to impede the free flow of labour.

Factors to consider include time constraints, such as the short semester, which made balancing work and academics difficult.
 Finances were limited, requiring financial commitment for case study visits, document photocopying, browsing, and other research activities.

1.5 Aims and Objectives

The Airline Reservation System (ARS) is a software application that assists airlines with ticket reservation procedures such as blocking, reserving, cancelling, and rescheduling.

1. Reduce the amount of time the system administrator and reservation clerks spend on repetitive tasks.

2. Maintain consistency across access modes, such as phone, web, information desk, and physical places. The technology should generally take users through the same stages that traditional desk-reservation systems do.

3. Save customer information in case of an emergency, such as a flight cancellation due to poor weather. The profile can also be used by airlines to track user preferences and travel habits in order to better service them, plan routes, improve marketing, and schedule flights more efficiently.

4. Maximise the airline’s revenue using a variety of means:

5. Increase frequent travellers’ awareness of numerous special offers and discounts.

6. Reduce the amount of unoccupied seats on a flight while maximising aircraft capacity use.

7. Maintain the capacity to implement a variable pricing policy. The ticket pricing should be dynamically determined dependent on how early the consumer buys the ticket, prior to the departure date.
