ABSTRACT
This study focusses on the subject of prostitution in FCT Abuja, Nigeria. The primary goal of the study is to discover the socioeconomic characteristics and conditions that are related with the occupation. It is an endeavour to investigate the socioeconomic background, pattern of establishment, social organisation, and forms of operation of prostitutes in order to recommend effective methods of eliminating prostitution. A cross-sectional survey design was used for the investigation. The study’s sample size consists of 150 prostitutes. Respondents were selected using a multistage sample strategy that included cluster and basic random sampling methods. The interview served as the primary data collection tool. The acquired data was analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency tables and percentages. The research revealed that the primary motivation for prostitution is financial gain. Prostitutes are reported to have pathological difficulties in their histories, and their social interactions are founded on a primordial pattern. Prostitution has both positive and negative outcomes. Given that all legislative efforts throughout history have failed to eradicate prostitution, this paper advocates for immediate steps to reduce prostitution in the country. Such steps include job creation, public enlightenment, reformation and rehabilitation programs, recreation, sports, and cultural facilities, formal education for illiterate and unskilled prostitutes, and the inclusion of sex education in secondary and tertiary education curricula.
