TERRORISM AND ITS CHALLENGES TO NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT.

Abstract

Terrorism, in its various forms, poses a threat and insecurity to human existence, causing defenceless nations to live in constant fear and anxiety. Knowing full well that security is currently a significant concern in Nigeria, with Nigerians being slain on a daily basis and in large numbers. Despite the government’s promises to be on top of the situation, the issue persists. The consequences of these terrorist attacks include challenges to the country’s national security, peace, unity, and development. This study investigates terrorism and the challenge of national development, revisiting the Nigerian dilemma. It gives a basic discourse on the concept of terrorism and national development, focussing on fundamental problems such as the developmental perspective. It also examines the effects of terrorism, which vary from economic downturns to political instability. This paper finds that there is a negative association between terrorism and development in accordance with literature and thus advises that the government should take the business of addressing concerns of terrorism as priority number one on the agenda.
