DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF AN AUTOMATED INVENTORY CONTROL SYSTEM FOR NIGERIAN BREWERIES PLC, ENUGU

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Nigerian Breweries Plc., established in 1946, is Nigeria’s pioneer and largest brewing firm. Its first bottle of beer, STAR Lager, went off the Lagos Brewery’s bottling lines in June 1949. The firm then commissioned more breweries, including Aba Brewery in 1957, Kaduna Brewery in 1963, and Ibadan Brewery in 1982.

The company bought its fifth brewery in Enugu state in September 1993, followed by its sixth brewery in Ama, Enugu, in October 2003. Ama Brewery is Nigeria’s largest brewery and one of the most modern in the world. The Enugu brewery’s operations were halted in 2004, leaving the corporation with five functioning breweries.

The company’s portfolio of high-quality brands includes Star Lager Beer (established in 1949), Gulder Lager Beer (1970), Maltina (1976), Legend Extra Stout (1992), and Amstel Malta (1994). In June 1998, the firm relaunched Heineken Lager in Nigeria.

Justifiably, the corporation has the challenge of maintaining proper records of products transfers, and because this is done manually, associated issues of insecurity, high operational costs, and supply delays develop.

Data processing in Nigerian Breweries PLC is now done out using people, pens, and paper to control stock and inventory, therefore I chose to take on this project to design automated inventory control system software, which would assist eradicate these unsightly tactics.

An inventory control system contains a list of orders to be filled, prompts workers to select the appropriate supplies, and offers packaging and shipping information.

Inventory control can be used to automate the process of fulfilling sales orders as well as managing inbound and outbound hardware material.

Automation is the replacement of human workers with technology. For successful sales and inventory management, logistics facilities must have comprehensive functionality.

Warehouse management functions for inventory control include internal warehouse movements and storage, as well as support for documenting and tracking items based on amount and value.

This application manages all supply orders, saving costs for warehousing and shipping while enhancing customer experience. It dramatically increases inventory turns, optimises the flow of goods, and shortens paths within warehouses and distribution facilities.

It also improves cash flow, visibility, and decision-making by allowing tasks to be completed more efficiently using this fast and reliable computerised method.

The design and installation of an automated inventory control system for the Nigerian Breweries PLC will undoubtedly provide significant respite from the issues connected with the manual approach.

1.2 Statement of the Problems

The Nigerian Breweries PLC is largely manual in operation and has a variety of issues.

 Sales and cash receipts are manually recorded in a rough book. As a result, the books are susceptible to physical damage, information loss, and dust accumulation.

 Managing a large number of daily supply orders.

 The control system is inefficient, time-consuming, and difficult to operate.

 Human mistake is a common source of inaccuracies.

The manual system is tiresome and can be decreased or removed with the implementation of the proposed solution.

1.3 Aims and Objectives of The Project

The goal of this research is to maximise the current operational process at Nigerian Breweries PLC by building efficient computer software that can handle inventories in a computerised form.

1.4 Justification for the Project

This project aims to boost operational efficiency, reduce maintenance and running costs, monitor the supply of items and their distribution, and increase profit in Nigerian Breweries PLC by using an automated inventory control system.

The new technology aims to improve database correctness, flexibility, efficiency, and dependability.

 Create a user-friendly interface.

 Save time, resources, and paperwork.

These will undoubtedly have an impact on the level of service provided to clients.
