CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

THE ’S BACKGROUND

In ancient society, a young man’s marriage was part of his parents’ responsibilities. The young man had no choice in the matter of wife. In some cases, he had a wife at the time. He couldn’t accept having a wife. And the parents did all of the maintenance. The spouses regarded such marriages as sacred and respected them. Parents were overly concerned about where their son would get his wife.

Marriages arranged by parents based on family friendship ties rarely ended in divorce in the past. Divorce, or the legal dissolution of a marriage, was also uncommon in the past due to the penalty associated with proven fidelity and the fear of offending both families’ elders. There are several types of marriage in Nigeria. We have church or statutory marriages, mosque marriages, and marriages formed according to native law and customs of any ethnic group.

One of the reasons people marry is to have children and start a family. When these children arrive, they are regarded as a gift from God and become both social and economic assets to their parents. This time, the family requires a safe place to live. As a result, the home becomes a place where children are raised to be responsible to both themselves and society as a whole.

To achieve its universal goals, such a home should be built on love, rust, mutual understanding, and good planning. When love and understanding are lacking, such a home becomes riddled with cracks and fissures. In addition, tension and anxiety become the norm. Thus, intimacy can lead to divorce, which is a personal misfortune for either spouse in any society. Although it may be regarded as a universal escape from the inevitable marital tension.

Divorce is a legal dissolution of the marital union that involves the administration of the marriage bond between a husband and his wife.

For a marriage to be successful, the couple must be mentally, physically, and spiritually in sync. In other words, the husband and wife must share a common goal and each must contribute to the fulfillment of the family, with the key word being love.

PROBLEM MENT

There are numerous issues associated with divorce or broken homes, which have a long-term impact on children’s academic performance. Some of these issues are as follows:

i. There is an increase in domestic work and redistribution of household chores, leaving children with little or no time for their studies.

ii. In security, stepparents do not lavish love and affection on their stepchildren. As a result, these children suffer from mental retardation, personality development, and are generally unhappy. They exhibit behavioral responses such as lying, stealing, building, and being absent from school.

iii. It has also been observed that children from broken homes face additional issues such as a lack of material needs such as food, clothing, and learning materials, among others.

iv. Greeting of a void in the lives of children because there is no adult to guide and their behavior and desires as children learn through limitation.

In light of this, the researcher is forced to wonder whether extra-marital relationships and financial problems can lead to a broken home, and if broken homes are causes of poor academic performance in children. In this regard, a closer examination of the current crop of secondary school graduates reveals a plethora of half-cooked, half-boiled, and half-baked scholars academically, socially, and otherwise.

PURPOSE

The researcher is interested in the study of the causes, problems, and effects of divorce or broken homes on children’s school performance because of the current decrease in children’s school performance, which has most Nigerians concerned about where we are headed.

In light of this, the purpose of this research is to identify the causes and problems associated with broken homes, as well as the effects on the performance of children in some selected secondary schools in the Oredo local government area.

Also, to educate married couples and the general public about the effects of divorce and/or broken homes on children, to encourage them to live harmoniously in order to raise children who will successfully fit into society and become useful to themselves, and to make any necessary recommendations.

THE IMPORTA OF THE

It is hoped that the findings of this study will improve social studies education programs. The researcher is interested in the study of the effect of divorce on children’s school performance because whatever happens in the home has an impact on the children.

It is therefore necessary to educate young people who are yet to marry about the problems and causes of divorce and their effects on the children. It will also teach children to be picky about who they date. The findings of this study will help parents who have considered divorce understand the problem they are facing and provide them with assurance about their children.
