TOURISM DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM USING DATA WAREHOUSE APPROACH

Chapter 1: Introduction
Tourism is becoming one of the world’s most efficient industries. IPROJECT (2016) found that it has a significant positive impact on countries by creating job opportunities, developing infrastructure, and providing a reliable source of income.

Tourism promotes a country’s infrastructure development. It provides excellent communication and transportation, affordable and comfortable accommodations, and essential infrastructure.

Tourism has a significant impact on the environment, hotel operations, and related industries. It also provides benefits such as infrastructure acquisition, electricity generation, roadway construction, and efficient water and sewage transfer systems (IPROJECT, 2016).

Tourism fosters togetherness among citizens of diverse countries, fostering meaningful relationships and a sense of community. IPROJECT (2016) suggests that preserving and improving local traditions and handcrafts can lead to unique tourism goods and promote awareness of the country’s heritage.

Nigeria’s tourism business, like the country, has significant untapped potential and a rich social past. The region spans 800 km of sandy beaches on the coast, tropical beachfront plains inland, mangrove bogs in the Niger delta, and woodlands in the south-east.

The focus areas are covered in savanna meadows, while further north the geology transforms to hot, semi-parched woodland. These shifted places provide breathtaking waterfalls, mountain ranges, marshes, National Parks, and World Heritage sites.

Nigeria is home to over 250 ethnic groups, each with its own heritage and traditions. According to Nigeriaembassy.jp (2016), the culture is vibrant, dynamic, and welcoming.

1.2 AIM
Design and install a tourist database management system employing a data warehouse strategy for decision-making.

1.3 Objectives

 Identify current difficulties in Nigeria’s tourist management system.

 Analyse data warehouse concepts for managing tourism databases.

13
 Choose appropriate approach for implementing a tourism management system.

 Develop database and dimensional model for tourism management system.

 Implement a tourism management system based on data warehouse concepts.

 Create a data model for the system with relevant tools.

 Created a user-friendly Oracle APEX interface for updating, deleting, and adding information, including location and traveller details.

 Created an APEX application to manage project-related information.

 Creating a system by combining designs from the objectives described above.

 Test the system and make decisions.

1.4 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM.
The government seeks statistical study on the viability and profitability of tourism, recognising its importance to the economy. It is challenging to meet this expectation due to manual documentation of traveller information

which consumes employees’ time and causes them to stay late at work. Additionally, there is a lack of knowledge about the most visited areas and the total number of foreign tourists, among other issues.

The proposed system allows tourists and government agencies to track arrivals by month, year, and location. It also provides managers with quick access to information to speed up daily tasks and make informed decisions.

1.5 SCOPE.

The project’s aim is limited to addressing internal administrative difficulties inside the present system. Coverage will be as follows:
The admin can edit, remove, examine, update, and add traveller, staff, accommodation, and transportation details, including location information.

 Edit privileges allow staff to access and edit content as needed.

 Travellers with no system access can register to read several reports.

 Only valid users can access the system.
14
A database and Apex application will be developed to manage staff details, location, traveller, accommodation, transportation, and other reports.

A data warehouse report will show the overall number of tourists who visited a location, as well as the income generated from transportation, accommodation, and travellers throughout a month or year. Furthermore, the most frequently visited location will be considered.

This project will not include traveller information updates, bookings, or payments.
