THE INFLUENCE OF MOTIVATION ON THE PERFORMANCE OF ADULT LEARNERS IN CONTINUING EDUCATION CENTRES

 

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of motivation on the performance of adult learners in Continuing Education Centres in the Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos State. Because all of the respondents were literate, the questionnaire was deemed appropriate for data collection.

Using stratified random sampling techniques, a total of 200 respondents, 100 male and 100 female, were randomly selected as simple size for the study. Two research questions were posed, as well as two hypotheses, to guide the investigation’s direction.

The collected data was analyzed using frequency distribution tables and percentage (percent), and the three null hypotheses were tested using the chi-square (X2) statistical tool at the 0.05 significance level. Findings revealed that, among other things, motivation has a significant influence on the performance of adult learners in Continuing Education centers.

Based on the findings, recommendations were made to improve and encourage adults to participate in Continuing Education in order to meaningfully contribute to the development and betterment of society.

INTRODUCTION

1.1The Study’s Background

Motivation is the study of what pushes and pulls a person to initiate, direct, sustain, and finally terminate an activity. For instance, an achievement activity such as studying for an exam.

Motivation, according to Miller (2000), is the study of why people think and behave the way they do. It is a branch of psychology concerned with the comprehension of the activation, organization, and direction of behavior. When actions that appear to have the same goal, such as eating, are grouped together, it is possible to say that these actions are all energized and guided by the same motive (hunger).

Adult learners in Continuing Education programs must be motivated in some way to encourage them to pursue continuing education programs with zeal. According to Houle (2003), continuing education is the planned and systematic attempt to introduce, review, or alter the competencies of professional performance. Wong (2005), for example, defines continuing education as “all learning opportunities that can be pursued after full-time compulsory schooling has ceased or ended.”

This type of education appears to have no end as long as individual adults are interested in learning new things, ideas, or knowledge to help them function effectively and efficiently in their societies. Adults can be enticed to participate actively in continuing education programs if they are motivated to learn (Wong, 2005).

Making a continuing education learning environment conducive enough for adult learners or participants to be relaxed while learning, for example, could attract more people. This entails ensuring that comfortable seating is available for program participants. The lighting or illumination of the learning environment can attract more adult participants to a continuing education center. Adult learners are more determined to learn when they are fully motivated.

As a result, the instructor or facilitator of continuing education programs must ensure that the adult learners’ anticipated needs and objectives are met as soon as possible. According to Jarvis (1992), the primary motivator for adult learners is need. If an adult is in need of a particular skill or knowledge, he or she must develop a genuine interest in acquiring or learning that skill or knowledge.

 

1.2Problem statement

Although motivation has been identified as a powerful force in all human endeavors, the rate at which adult learners in continuing education and other adult education-related programs are handled appears to be discouraging. Adult learners frequently complain about being treated like children simply because they are going through a learning process. The issue appears to be complex, as the organizers do not appear to be aware of the negative impact this has on the performance of adult learners.

1.3The Study’s Purpose

The purpose of this study is to see if there is a link between motivation and performance of adult learners in continuing education programs in the Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos State. Specifically, the research sought to:

1. Determine whether motivation has a significant impact on adult learners’ performance in continuing education centers.

2. Determine whether a teacher’s attitude influences adult learners’ performance in continuing education centers.

 

1.4Research Issue

The following research questions have been posed:

1. Does motivation have a significant impact on the performance of adult learners in continuing education centers?

2. Will the attitude of the teacher affect the performance of adult learners in continuing education centers?

 

1.5Analysis of Research Hypotheses

To guide the research, the following hypotheses were proposed:

1. Motivation will have no significant impact on the performance of adult learners in continuing education centers.

2. The attitude of teachers will have no significant impact on the performance of adult learners in continuing education centers.

1.6The Study’s Importance

The study will specifically benefit the people listed below.

Adult learners would be the primary beneficiaries of this study because they would gain a great deal from its recommendations and outcomes. In school, they would be introduced to the concepts of motivation and achievement. This study will also encourage them to study hard in order to improve their performance at the continuing education center.

This study would be extremely beneficial to parents because it would allow them to have a more positive perception of their children’s motivation and academic achievement. The study’s recommendations will undoubtedly assist parents in motivating their children to achieve high levels of academic achievement. Guidance counselors will see this study as beneficial and good because the recommendations will help them counsel people, particularly adolescents, who have low academic achievement due to poor or non-motivation by their facilitators or parents.

 

1.7The study’s scope

The study examined the concept of motivation as it relates to the performance of adult learners in continuing education centers in Lagos State’s Ikorodu Local Government Area. The area’s continuing education centers were given special consideration.

1.8Study Restrictions

Due to time and financial constraints, the study was limited to four selected continuing education centers in Ikorodu Local Government.
