THE GIRL CHILD ATTITUDE TOWARDS SCIENCE STUDY IN SOME SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOL IN EDO STATE’S EGOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND

The art of knowing as a human being is more or less synonymous with research, and it is an integral part of a modern way of life in which research is the daily task of specialized individuals working alone or in groups, typically in laboratories. With this in mind, the study will take a fictitious look at the girl child’s attitude toward science study in Edo State’s Egor Local Government Area.

It is widely acknowledged that the country’s level of socioeconomic development and scientific technological advancement. Similarly, the population’s level of general well-being and security is the result of creative scientific and technological inventions or activities taking place among the people.

Fafunwa (1968), a great educationist who made significant contributions to the field of science education, stated that “in today’s world, science and technology have become a dominant cultural factor, and any nation that is not alive to it is diseased on dying.” In other words, by teaching science in our schools, we can advance technologically and economically.

Scientific knowledge is constantly defined through research-based scientific methods, which include national theory. Science is that aspect of knowledge that comes to play a vital role in our daily activities or that directly finds explanation in the field of science. Almost every field of study requires knowledge of science; doctors, engineers, farmers’ tailors, carpenters, housewives, technologists, and so on.

Fafunwa (1969), speaking on premature specialization in science education as a tool for developing nations, sat on the in-table nature of science in optional development. However, it is nearly impossible to live a full and satisfying life today with little or no knowledge of science.

To solve our economic problems, we need to improve our diets, transportation systems, and mineral development, as well as control soil erosion. We must also introduce modern scientific farming, control cattle disease, and improve our health program.

The study of science subjects necessitates proficiency in technical languages and analytical processes. If this is the case, the research team may believe that it is critical to conduct a thorough investigation into the various girls’ child attitudes in particular and students in general toward scientific operation study of science in secondary school.

There are claims that boys are more scientifically involved than girls, and some of these people even claim that their attitudes are influenced by sex and that sex has a lot to do with their scientific experience, behavior, and so on.

However, it is worth noting that the researcher’s interest was piqued by a teaching practice exercise at Golden Touch High School in Edo State’s Egor local government area. One of the commended complaints by a senior science teacher was the relative lack of interest shown by girls in science, which they correctly taught belonged to the field of machine studies.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study aims to identify the factors that influence girl child attitudes toward science learning and study in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State, as well as the reasons why girls have negative attitudes toward science subjects.

Secondary female students’ attitudes toward science are among the variables. The study’s major problems would be attempting to answer questions about girls’ negative attitudes toward science and whether their perceptions lead to scientific achievement.

QUESTION FOR RESEARCH

The study will be guided by the following research questions:

1. Is there a link between females’ home environments and their attitudes toward science education?

2. Is there a link between girls’ mathematical backgrounds and their attitudes toward science study?

3. Is there a link between a girl’s future professional goals and her attitude toward science?

4. Is there a link between their perceptions of female students and their attitudes toward science education?

PRIMARY ASSUMPTION

Regarding the research exercise, the following assumptions have been made:

1. Girls have a general perception that science subjects are complex, abstract, and highly mathematical, and as a result, many shy away from science-related subjects.

2. In some homes, girls are so preoccupied with housework that they have little time to study.

3. Female students have a more positive attitude toward acts than boys, and boys are more inclined to be in the field of science.

Students, as members of society, cannot be exempt from having an impact on the entire society. It is also assumed that the selection of 6-8 students from a variety of secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area is unbiased, and that the chosen simple is representative of all female students in Egor Local Government Area.

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study is to survey secondary school girls’ attitudes toward science study in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State, as well as to investigate factors influencing girls’ attitudes toward science subjects. The study hopes to offer suggestions on how to solve some of these problems in science education in Edo State and Nigeria in general.

THE STUDY’S IMPORTANCE

In order to achieve desired behavior or find a solution to any problems, it is critical to identify the underlying causes and then take honest steps to eliminate the undesirable behavior, habit, or problems.

As a result, the importance of this study is to learn about the attitudes of girls in secondary school toward science education. This will go a long way toward providing a solution to ensure that girls face the field of science with courage, confidence, and determination. The study will help teachers and science planners find an appropriate method of teaching science subjects and formulate relevant science.

STUDY OBJECTIVES

This study was limited to six secondary schools in Edo State’s Egor Local Government Area, of which eight are private co-educational schools. As a result, the data collected will only include responses from female students.
