Problem of Physically Challenged Education in Nigeria (A CASE STUDY OF SELECTED SCHOOLS IN BENIN CITY)

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 INTRODUCTION

The handicapped children are gifted children who can be educated regardless of their disabilities, such as the deaf, blind, dumb, and lame. There is a need to redirect national interest, support, and understanding for the plight of the disabled away from the conventional view that they are only qualified for goals.

It does not bode well for our sense of social responsibility if handicapped people, with the exception of those who could be cared for by their families, are forced to rely on charitable donations. Yunusa (1993) believes that being physically handicapped does not preclude individuals from contributing to various aspects of national development.

Consequently, the handicapped students in Edo State possess the same abilities and sum total of knowledge as their peers. Education, a process of a lifetime, must be provided to all individuals, including those with physical disabilities. The term ‘handicap’ can be viewed from a variety of perspectives, primarily psychological and maladaptive.

WHO IS A CHILD WITH A DISABILITY?

A handicapped child is a child who is unable to live as normally as other children due to a lack of hands, legs, eyes, ears, etc. In day-to-day life, the term handicap is frequently used to refer to a physical defect, limb paralysis, partial or total blindness, etc. All of these characteristics prevent the child from living as normally as other children.

When used in a broad sense, the term handicapped encompasses intellectual disabilities and disadvantages that impede learning. In light of the preceding discussion, this study will investigate the hardships likely to be encountered by handicapped children in school. Previous research has shown that teachers may underestimate the handicapped’s abilities because they are already labeled “special children.” Many believe they cannot perform as well as students with innate talent.

This study will investigate the various challenges facing the education of handicapped students.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS

This study will evaluate the problem of handicapped students in Edo State schools.

1.3 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

To determine the handicapped conditions conducive to learning.

To consider the effects of physical impairments on the careers of students with physical impairments.

To dispel the widespread notion that disabled students cannot significantly contribute to society.

To evaluate the issues facing handicapped students in Benin City and Edo State schools in general.

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

a. Does having a disability affect the academic performance of students?

b. Are there no unique obstacles that prevent handicapped students from performing effectively in the learning process?

c. Is it impossible for handicapped students to participate in learning activities alongside typical students?

1.5 BASIC ASSUMPTIONS

a. Being handicapped has no effect on the academic performance of students.

b. That there are no unique obstacles preventing handicapped students from performing effectively in learning.

c. That it is impossible for handicapped students to participate in learning activities alongside typical students.

1.6 DELIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The investigation is limited to a single type of handicap, namely physical deformity. This research will be conducted in five Benin City schools with handicapped students.

1.7 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE EVALUATION

i. To be successful, handicapped students require additional attention.

They require special attention from their teachers before they can effectively learn.

iii. There are no unique obstacles that can prevent handicapped children from learning.

iv. The responsibilities of teachers towards handicapped students must be significantly increased in comparison to those towards typical students.

1.8 DEFINITIONS OF TERMS
