POLITICAL PARTIES AND DEMOCRATIC CONSOLIDATION IN NIGERIA

1.1.1 INTRODUCTION

It is the most effective criteria for distinguishing political parties in a multi-party democracy. In a democratic society, ideology serves as a road map for the operations of viable political parties. In Nigeria, the establishment of civilian administration in May 1999 saw the development of political groups that are either ideologically sterile or indistinguishable.

The inclination is frequently linked to a desire to expand the political space for democratic chances and progress. However, this paper argued that the proliferation of such parties in Nigeria is primarily due to their members’ insatiable pursuit of private material interests.

Thus, anchoring analysis within the paradigmatic orientation of Marxist political economy, the paper investigated the role of private material interest in the proliferation of non-ideology-based political parties in the country.

The document advocated, among other things, that the establishment of parties and political contestations be defined solely by political philosophy.

Perhaps, mainstream language in Nigerian media and popular polity discourses is frequently centred on the assumption that Nigeria is “consolidating its democracy: the evidence on the ground, however, contradicts this claim” (Momoh, 2013:1).

It is most acceptable to compare the relationship between political parties and the maintenance of democratic government in a given society to the relationship between the umbilical cord and the foetus (Yagboyaju, 2012:54). Political parties are at the centre of analysing the health of any kind of democracy (Orji, 2013:1).

For example, Orji (2013) asserts that to talk about a system of competing political parties today is to speak of a system of competitive political parties. Their duties and activities are essential in evaluating democratic parties (Momoh, 2013:1).

With the transition to civil rule in 1999 (the start of the fourth republic), political parties were given the mission to generate the proper individuals to lead (Momoh, 2013:1).

The political party(ies) is one of the most complex and important democratic institutions (Omotola, 2009). On the path of political parties in Nigeria’s fourth republic’s democratic development. These and other concerns stem from the piece’s core. Our goal for this journey is to thoroughly investigate and deconstruct the concerns stated.
