MANAGEMENT OF SMALL BUSINESS:A POSITIVE STEP TOWARDS GRADUATE SELF EMPLOYMENT (A CASE STUDY OF NATIONAL DIRECTORATE OF EMPLOYMENT (NDE) KADUNA)ABSTRACT

This research work is on the Management of Small Business as a Step
Towards Graduate Self Employment.
The aim of the study is to discover whether Graduates hope to be self
employed or not, and the effect of the course they studied in relation to their
becoming good managers of a successful business enterprise.
To provide a solution to unemployment problem in the country,
Government had set up a machinery to encourage self employment through the
proliferation of small Business Enterprises, by the establishment of National
Directorate of Employment and other agencies. However, the problem is still
persisting due to lack of proper orientation and marketable skills. Graduate
Unemployment which was hitherto not a problem during the early 60’s and 80’s
has emerged and is growing out of proportion very rapidly. Generally, the
unemployment problem, can be rightly attributed to the large turnout of primary
and secondary school leavers who are unable to secure admission into higher
institutions as well as the increasing number of graduates turned out by the
country’s Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education and the complete
absence of job openings in both public and private sectors. Such graduates roam
the streets in search of unavailable jobs without any zeal to take advantage of the
opportunities for self employment readily available in the informal sector of the
economy.
Having looked at the above problem, the study revealed the following:
That our educational system emphasises paid employment rather than self
employment.
