INTERPLAY OF POLITICS AND RELIGION IN NIGERIAN FOURTH REPUBLIC

CHAPITRE ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background Of The Study

Religion has always been an important phenomenon in Nigeria. It had grown in importance in political debate (Adigwe and Grau, 2007). Religion’s effect is not restricted to politics; it has an impact on almost every aspect of life. Political power has an impact on economic development, social relationships, educational growth, and society’s psyche.

Nigeria is dominated by three religions: African Traditional Religion, Islam, and Christianity. All of these religions and ideologies allow for religious and political cooperation. Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa, with an estimated 160 million people, and one of the most diversified, with over 250 unique ethnic and linguistic groupings.

Islam and Christianity are approximately equal, while African traditional faiths are also widespread (Lewis, 2011:2). Much of the news and commentary about Nigeria depicts the country as divided into a “largely Muslim north” and a “predominantly Christian south.”

While a simple shorthand, this narrative ignores Nigeria’s teeming diversity and glosses over the rich ethnic, religious, and social links that have kept the country together through numerous episodes of instability. In today’s Nigeria, the north and south have ethnically and religiously diverse populations.

Muslims and Christians have coexisted peacefully across the country for decades, and they intermarry in the southwest, where identity is primarily determined by regional culture and beliefs (Hoffmann, 2014:5). However, Nigeria’s ruling class frequently exploits weak institutions and the mobilisation of identity groups for their own selfish gain.

Religion has become increasingly contentious in Nigeria, exacerbating tensions along fault lines. While it is widely assumed that ethnic identification is the most salient and consistent source of social identity in Nigeria (Lewis, 2007 cited in Okpanachi, 2010:7)

a study conducted by the Pew Religious Forum found that religion, rather than ethnicity, is the most salient identity in the country. Political campaigners utilise the religious aspect,

understanding that it is the most profound and powerful rallying point. It contains powerful pictures or symbols, values, and commitments, and it elicits powerful emotions (Agu, 2010:10).

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

According to political scientists, man is a political animal. This means that we cannot live without both politics and religion in our daily lives. As a result, because we employ each of them in our daily lives, we tend to politicise religion and religionize politics. Thus, “politicisation of religion and religionization of politics” (Adogame, 2006) characterise Nigerian politics.

When the two are combined, religion loses its sanctity and politics becomes filthy. This reality is reflected in the nature of Nigeria’s postcolonial state system, particularly the capture and control of state power by a self-centered and divided political class that used religion and politics strategically to divide the people,

consolidate and extend its control over resources and power in Nigeria’s emerging capitalist formation. According to this viewpoint, the researcher wishes to explore the interaction of politics and religion in Nigeria’s fourth republic.

1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The following are the study’s primary goals:

1. Determine the impact of politics and religion on Adamawa State

2. To determine whether the interaction of politics and religion brought people together in Adamawa State.

3. Determine whether politics and religion interact in Adamawa State.

4. Determine the connection between politics and religion

1.4 RESEARCH THEORIES

The researcher developed the following research hypotheses in order to successfully complete the study:

H0: Politics has little effect on religion in Adamawa State.

H1: Politics has an impact on religion in Adamawa State.

H02: Politics and religion have no effect in Adamawa State.

H2: Politics and religion interact in Adamawa State.

1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The outcomes of the study are expected to help the people of Adamawa and the entire nation once completed. The study will also be very useful to academics who plan to conduct research on similar themes because it will act as a guide. Finally, the research will be very useful to academics, lecturers, teachers, students, and the general public.

1.6 SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The study’s focus includes the interaction of politics and religion in Nigeria’s fourth republic: a case study of Adamawa State.The researcher comes upon a constraint that limits the scope of the investigation;

a) RESEARCH MATERIAL AVAILABILITY: The researcher’s research material is insufficient, restricting the scope of the investigation.

b) TIME: The study’s time frame does not allow for broader coverage because the researcher must balance other academic activities and examinations with the study.

c) Organisational privacy: Limited access to the selected auditing firm makes obtaining all necessary and required information about the operations challenging.

1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS

INTERPLAY: The interactions that occur or exist between two or more items, groups, or individuals.

POLITICS:Politics is the process of making decisions that affect all members of a given organisation. More specifically, it relates to acquiring and exercising positions of organised government over a human community, notably a state.

RELIGION: Religion is any cultural system of prescribed behaviours and rituals, worldviews, books, holy places, ethics, or organisations that connect mankind to the supernatural or transcendental.

1.8 THE STUDY’S

This research paper is divided into five chapters for easy comprehension.

The first chapter is concerned with the introduction, which includes the (overview of the study), historical background, problem statement, objectives of the study, research hypotheses, significance of the study, scope and limitation of the study, definition of terms, and historical background of the study.

The second chapter emphasises the theoretical framework on which the study is based, as well as a survey of related literature. The third chapter discusses the study’s research strategy and methodology.

The fourth chapter focuses on data gathering, analysis, and presenting of findings. The study’s summary, conclusion, and suggestions are presented in Chapter 5.
