INSECURITY QUESTION IN NIGERIA: A THEMATIC EXPOSITION
Agriculture has always been an important part of any economy. In any polity, viable agricultural programs and activities are capable of sustaining the food supply and reserves required for citizens’ welfare. Agriculture, on the other hand, is despised in Nigeria because able-bodied young people are uninterested in it.
Climate change, clashes between herdsmen and farmers, and the activities of the Boko Haram sect have exacerbated the polity’s food insecurity challenges, as population displacement, death, non-cultivation of farmlands, and farm produce burning have reduced the quality and quantity of food demand.
Although the Federal Government assured Nigerians in 2013 that the fear of an impending food crisis was unfounded, many Nigerians, particularly concerned stakeholders, are skeptical that the means and methods devised by government at all levels can possibly address the challenge. This paper addresses the causes and consequences of these challenges, concluding that unless these issues are addressed, food insecurity in Nigeria will persist for a long time.
