Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The quality of services produced by any organisation determines its success, especially in a competitive market; thus, the theory and practice of Total Quality Management (TQM) are relevant.

Most organisations continue to believe that traditional quality control systems and procedures are the best way to resolve quality issues, however this is incorrect.

Employing move inspectors to create rectification repairs and rework teams does not enhance quality. Traditionally, quality has been viewed as the duty of the quality control (QC) department, and some organisations have yet to recognise that many quality issues begin in marketing, sales, service, and administration.

Total Quality Management (TQM) is a shift of responsibility for faults from the consumer to the producer. It necessitates a strategy, which must first be adopted if the benefits are to be realised.

Today’s corporate environment requires managers to plan ahead of time in order to maintain market share. If definitions are required, Total Quality Management (TQM) is a strategy for increasing the competitiveness and adaptability of an entire organisation.

It can be defined as the process of planning, organising, and comprehending each activity involving each participant at every level. Total Quality Management (TQM) is also a method of reducing wasted effort in people’s lives by including everyone in the improvement process, enhancing work effectiveness, and achieving goals in less time.

Total Quality Management (TQM) strategies and practices are applicable to every organisation. They are equally represented in marketing, health care, education, and hospitality industries.

The impact of Total Quality Management (TQM) on an organisation begins with ensuring that management adopts a strategic approach to quality. The strategy must centre on creating a problem-solving mindset, but it is easy to underestimate the effort required to shift methods.

Many people will have to completely modify their opinions about their institution, which jumps into inspection mode to tackle quality problems. The correct mindset can be created by addressing the kind of hurdles that present in the key arrears.

Staff will need to be trained and shown how to devote their time and energy to studying their process in groups, looking for the root cause of problems and resolving the causes rather than the symptoms once and for all.

Management will need to take a positive step to promote the night first attitude to work circumstances. These steps, when carried out by process improvement teams, will automatically lessen the inspection-rejection syndrome.

If things are done right the first time, the typical issues that necessitate inspection for failure will be resolved.

Total Quality Management (TQM) is a business management method that views the organization’s consumers and creation as the keys to its success. However, some Nigerian businesses define quality using technical criteria. An effective Total Quality Management (TQM) Strategy requires product quality to exceed acceptable levels for a certain price range.

It must include everyone in the organisation and every department. It expresses the belief that in order to improve quality, the organisation should undertake regular surveys of its customers (internal and external) to assess its quality improvement programmes and strategies.

Total Quality Management (TQM) strategists in Nigerian organisations should monitor performance against customer standards rather than those defined by the company’s quality engineers.

However, Nigerian enterprises that do not practise Total Quality Management (TQM) may endure internal and external loss of trust by top management in one another, as well as low morale.

Finally, the idea of Total Quality Management (TQM) focuses on improving product quality and service delivery. Managers seek to improve the longevity and quality of a product as it progresses through its lifecycle. They also strive to improve delivery times and other services in order to keep their brands (products) competitive.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

It is improbable that all Nigerian businesses will behave so differently towards their clients and consumers that they will be able to thrive in today’s competitive business environment, and they must incorporate that listening into their strategy development processes using TQM principles and strategies.

Customer happiness is strongly tied to product and service quality. Thus, quality improvement programmes typically boost profitability.

The well-known profit impact of marketing studies demonstrates a strong relationship between relative product quality and profitability.

Nigerian enterprises now have no choice but to implement TQM. If they want to remain in business, let alone be lucrative. Quality is the best customer guarantee, the most effective defence against competition, and the only path to long-term corporate growth and profitability.
