ABSTRACT
The Federal Government of Nigeria throuqh the Central Bank of Nigeria , embarked upon a nation-wide rural banking programme, ostensibly with the aim of encouraging the use of banks by rural individuals , thereby mopping up enormous rural funds for more productive re-distribution and re-investment through the banking system .
After many years of the existence of the Rural Banking Programme, it is necessary to find out
now truly rural where are those banks located in the rural areas . In this study , based on the UBA Rano Branch ,
the rurality of rural banks was measured principally by means of percentage comparison of the
maximum deposits ever made at any time by various categories o f customers; leading to evaluation of
the percentage participation by rural individuals . The finding is briefly that participation by rural individuals is still meagre , but nevertheless government effort is impressive and hopeful .
