CLOUD BASED LOCAL TRAIN TICKETING SYSTEM

 

Abstract— A ticketing system for railways in Mumbai suburbs was introduced to authenticate and authorize valid commuters to suit their comfort, purpose, or needs while traveling. Due to the abundance of job opportunities in Mumbai, the population that began using this train increased dramatically, resulting in a slew of issues such as never-ending lines, paper waste, and inefficient resource and staff utilization.

The alternative techniques proposed to resolve these issues failed miserably. Furthermore, despite having such a massive amount of data generated from commuters, no analysis was ever performed to improve the railway service and commuter experiences.

To avoid the pitfalls listed above, this paper proposes a smart ticketing system architecture for railways that eliminates the use of paper tickets and completely captures the amount of money commuters have invested in their travel. If a commuter intends to travel from a source to a destination but does not intend to return on the same day, only half of the ticket price will be considered.

Commuters will benefit from the ability to use seasonal tickets according to their needs, based on the number of days they have subscribed to. This model also allows authorities to identify commuters who never pay and buy their tickets or fail to carry their passes while traveling.

The proposed system will also include features such as crowd analysis and the recommendation of cost-effective offers to railway commuters. Smart Ticketing; AWS; Lambda; IoT; Raspberry Pi; Dynamo DB; Simple Notification Service; Machine Learning

I.  INTRODUCTION

A train ticket is a ticket issued by a railway operator that allows commuters to use the railway network. Commuters can use tickets to travel on a predetermined route at a predetermined time. The introduction of manual ticketing has always made it easier for authorities to keep track of various events involving financial matters and people’s travel patterns.

However, these activities had to be carried out manually, requiring a large amount of manpower and resources. The use of electronic equipment such as computers, printing machines, paper, and ink are the most important resources required for paper ticketing systems.

Furthermore, the use of electrical equipment such as ceiling fans, tube lights, and air conditioners has proven to be an expensive affair. Aside from time and money, these systems necessitate extensive maintenance and repairs on a regular basis.

Banking transactions must also be performed manually from location to location on a consistent basis. Obtaining railway tickets or seasonal passes from manually set-up counters today is time consuming for commuters because they must wait in a queue. Paper tickets generate a lot of paper waste on a daily basis from millions of commuters traveling from one point to another.

The introduction of technologies has only paved the way for quick and accurate computing as well as information gathering, both of which are directly or indirectly beneficial to authorities. With the introduction of CVM coupons, there were also alternative machines introduced to avoid never-ending queues.

Customers had to form a line in order to obtain these coupon booklets from manually set up counters. These coupons had their own digital machines that printed the date and time before the journey began. The main disadvantage of using these coupons is that they cannot be used to limit the reuse of the same coupons by reprinting new dates over old ones.

It also failed to record and print the commuter’s starting and ending points. To eliminate CVM coupons and avoid long lines, the Automatic Ticket vending Machine was introduced. In order to use the ATVM machines, customers had to keep a balance on their respective Smart cards.

When compared to Coupon vending Machines, this system overcomes the disadvantage of recording and printing source and destination on commuter tickets. However, ATVM machines do not eliminate the need for paper tickets. Mobile applications were also introduced to make it easier and more convenient for customers to book tickets online. However, in order to access these services, this technology requires Internet access and a smart phone.

All existing systems fail to authenticate commuters with valid tickets or passes, and there are no provisions in place to catch such evading commuters. To address the aforementioned shortcomings, this paper proposes a smart ticketing system architecture for Mumbai suburb railways, which completely contradicts the concept of paper tickets. If the user intends to travel from a source to a destination but does not intend to return on the same day, only half of the ticket price will be considered.

Users will benefit from the ability to use seasonal tickets based on the number of days subscribed for. This model also allows authorities to identify commuters who never pay and buy their tickets or fail to carry their passes while traveling.

The proposed system will also include features such as crowd analysis and the recommendation of cost-effective offers to railway commuters. This proposed system is built on the AWS public cloud, making it a highly robust, scalable, pluggable, and faster architecture.
