How to Stick to Your Schedule

A lot of discipline goes into being able to make a day as productive as possible, and different methods are employed by different people to be as effective and profitable in their daily tasks as possible. How easy is it to keep to a schedule? Imagine you have a whole list of things to do in a day, it’s one thing for the tasks to be on probably your to-do list, it’s another thing for you to be able to carry out the tasks as scheduled. Think of a timetable situation where you have all the supposedly important things you got to do per day listed, in order to follow the timetable and be productive, there are strategies that should be applied. When you know how to stick to your schedule, you become more confident of goals you set because you know you will be able to nail them, on the other hand, not knowing how to keep yourself committed to your plans will mean that there will be lapses, and you might probably end up eating below the marks you set for yourself daily or otherwise. If you want to know how you can stay committed to your schedule, then the following tips are what you need.

1. Don’t Divide Your Attention

When there is a particular task on your schedule, you should ensure that you concentrate on that task and that task alone. Don’t try to do too many things at a time. Not having a divided attention while attending to your daily tasks will help you to pour all your energy and resource into getting that particular activity done in the right frame of time. If because of divided attention, you are unable to finish a particular task in due time, then that will affect other activities on your schedule, which might mean a distortion in your schedule for that day. Concentrating on a particular task will also help you to make the best out of it, apart from finishing at the right time, your mind and attention will be optimally present in what you are doing.

2. Schedule Breaks

One way to reduce friction in your schedule is to include breaks, do not have a schedule that is so filled up with activities and there is no time for relaxation. You should ensure that you make the time out regularly in your schedule to help you keep optimal and productive. If there are no break times within your schedules, if you are so dogged and you are able to follow the schedule for some time, just working and working with little or no necessary rest, then you might end up eventually breaking down and that will not be good, because that time you might not even be able to do anything productive as such. Nature cannot be cheated, so in as much as you want to train yourself to work and achieve, you must also remember that health is wealth and it is only a healthy man that can be able to work productively enough.

3. Use Realistic Deadlines

Being able to keep to your schedules will mean that you give enough space for things you aim to accomplish through your schedule. You cannot keep to a schedule that is not feasible. Ensure that any task that is on your to-do list or time table has the required space for it to be able to get accomplished. Having so many things on your schedule and not being able to accomplish them is not really cool, it’s better to have not so many tasks on your schedule and be able to get them all done. This doesn’t imply that you should not have necessary tasks on your schedule or have so little that you have too much time to waste, but to ensure that you put in as many necessary and feasible tasks as possible, in terms of time and possibility.

4. Handle Distractions

There is no way you can be able to keep to your schedules as expected if you do not know how to handle distractions effectively. There is likely no day when you won’t have distractions around you, so if you are expecting the distractions to disappear before you do anything, then you might not really be able to do anything because distractions will almost always be there. You must train yourself to be able to handle distractions, say no to distractions, stick to what you have to do. If someone comes to you wanting to chat or be around while you have something to do, you will have to find a polite way of letting the person know that you have something to do at such a time. You should also help yourself by doing your activities in places with less distractions, if some activities require that you put your phone on silence, then that is what you should do. Avoiding distractions, handling distractions properly will help you to focus on the task at hand and be able to move on to other important things on your schedule. If you are really going to achieve, you can’t please everybody, and you can do what every other person is doing every time.

5. Constantly Check

Ensure you regularly look at your schedule, so as to remind yourself of the things you have their which you have to attend to. Having a schedule, and not looking at it, not even being conscious of what is there, will make your effort at creating the schedule somewhat useless, especially if you then forget important things that you could have remembered should you have checked.

6. Give Proper Time for Hard Tasks

You should try to be very deliberate about ensuring that you put tasks that demand or require much attention and concentration at times when you are going to be less distracted and when you will be well available to attend to them. This kind of plan will make your sticking to it more feasible.

7. Put Your Plans in One Place

Don’t have too many places where you schedule things to do or attend to. You are one single person, so to help you easily track the tasks you have to attend to, have your plans in one place. Try to have a kind of specialised notebook, diary/journal where you plan everything you want to do.

8. Ensure Your Schedule Fits Your Lifestyle

Don’t have a schedule that doesn’t fit your daily lifestyle. Make sure your schedule is such that your kind of person and the kind of lifestyle can work with.

9. Delete Unnecessary Tasks

If you discover there are activities on your schedule that are not necessary, remove them from the schedule, so that you can plan your available time with the important and necessary activities. Don’t spend time and energy on unimportant activities, which you probably would have diverted into more productive tasks and not have such a tight schedule.

10. Get Help

What if you found someone to hold you accountable to your schedule and check on you to find out if you are doing the things you should? That might help right? You may want to use the help of a friend or someone close and available to keep watch on you and help you stay on course.

11. Try it Again

If you discover one day you are unable to keep to your schedule, don’t give up and throw your hands in the air, try to follow your schedule again the next day, keep going for it until you are able to work with it, and if it needs adjustment, do the necessary adjustment.
