CHAPTER ONE

– INTRODUCTION

1.1 CONTEXT OF THE STUDY
Clearly, education is the fundamental tool for economic progress and technological improvement in any civilization. In acknowledgment of this, governments devote enormous resources to assuring the availability of education for their inhabitants and have also crafted rules to ensure that it is accessible to the majority of their citizens (Oyebade et al., 2008). Nonetheless, business education is a crucial component of this general education. It focuses on imparting business mindset and expertise for individual and national advancement.
Students are taught the fundamentals, concepts, theories, and procedures of business through business education. According to Okoli (2010), business education is an essential component of general education since it stresses the acquisition of skills and competencies for use in offices and business-related vocations.

Similarly, Nwanewezi (2010) defines business education as including office occupations education, business instruction, business administration, and economic understanding. Overall, according to Abdulkadir (2011), one of the most significant characteristics of a business education program is that its graduates can work freely as self-employed and labor employers. To this purpose, the fundamental principle of business education encompasses basic education for teaching career, entrepreneurship, business comprehension, office environment, and vocational activities.
There are multiple levels of education in this field, including primary, secondary, and university education, with the latter being the most active. Igboke (2005) enumerated the aims of business education at all levels of education as follows:

To acquire fundamental abilities for personal use in the future
To gain the fundamental business knowledge and abilities
To apply gained knowledge and abilities to national growth
To develop fundamental office skills and to provide the necessary framework for teaching business subjects.
To prepare students for additional business studies training
Providing those who may not pursue additional training with the orientation and fundamental skills necessary to begin a career.
For education to truly serve as a vehicle for socioeconomic growth and development, as well as the achievement of these lofty goals of business education, educational institutions and their systems must operate effectively in accordance with their established criteria.
Historically, business education in Nigeria did not originate from the government, but rather from the initiative of a few Nigerian entrepreneurs. These individuals quickly realized the significance of business education not just to their own economic growth and development, but also to that of the nation as a whole. Prior to Nigeria’s independence and for a decade afterward, business teacher education, along with other vocational and technical education disciplines, was not considered in Nigerian teacher education curricula. This does not imply that Colonial educational authorities did not appreciate the significance of this type of teacher education. As stated by

According to Ekpenyong (1992), some type of business and technical teacher education programme was implemented in the curricula of Higher College, Yaba (1932-1947) and Nigerian College of Arts, Science, and Technology (1947-present) (1954-61).

Business education exposes students to a variety of new approaches. It also fosters Job Competence and a comprehension of the career prospects accessible in the field of business. Without proper education, expertise, and abilities, entrepreneurial endeavors typically fail. According to the statistics released by the Education Ministry, this is the case. In recent years, at least sixty percent of graduates have been unable to find employment quickly, which is not conducive to economic progress (Lawal 2005). Due of this, people engage in a variety of entrepreneurial endeavors, but regrettably, many are not fully equipped to confront the inherent obstacles of business. Now, Business education must be incorporated into the curriculum in order to prepare our graduates for self-employment.

1.2 DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM
Business Education is a type of training that, while contributing to the attainment of the general goals of education at any given level, has as its primary objective the preparation of people to enter a career, to render efficient service, and to advance from their current level of employment to higher levels that always have a significant impact on the economic development of a nation (Osuala 2003). Basic Business Education affords every individual the opportunity to develop the skills, abilities, and knowledge that will enable him to handle his personal business affairs with competence; to develop an understanding of the vocational opportunities available in the broad field of business; and to assume his citizenship responsibilities through informed participation in and appreciation of the business system (Osuala 2003). In addition, Basic Business Education encompasses a vast body of economic information.
