A SURVEY OF EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES IN PRIVATE AND PUBLIC PRIMARY SCHOOLS

ABSTRACT

The case study for this research was a survey of educational facilities in private and public primary schools in Odeda, Ogun State.

The study’s subjects were eighty (n =80) teachers. In addition, the survey design method was used in the study. This instrument was used in the data collection method and was on a four wlert scale: available, not available, adequate, and inadequate, while data was codified into frequency count and analyzed using percentages.

It confirms that private primary schools have more adequate educational facilities than public primary schools, but the major issue is that the government has not assisted the educational facilities in public primary schools by restricting only a few schools in public schools from having educational facilities.

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 INVESTIGATION

The popular belief that private schools have more educational facilities than public schools sparked interest in the survey of educational facilities in private and public primary schools. As a result, parents prefer sending their children to private primary schools where they must pay school fees rather than public primary schools where they do not have to pay school fees.

However, understanding the concept of education is required before fully discussing the topic of this project. Education theorists and philosophers attempt to define education in a variety of ways. Adeyinka (1971) defines education as the process of transmitting a society’s culture from one generation to the next, in which the elder members of a society raise the younger members.

Furthermore, UNESCO INTERNATIONAL STANDARD Education classification defines education as “organized and standard communication designed to bring about learning.” Education can be viewed as a long-term life process that begins at birth and continues until death; this definition implies that education begins when a child is born and continues until death.

According to Adetoro (1995), educational facilities are also facilities or materials that are used to carry out any job or accomplish work. According to Ndagi (1995), educational facilities are the total input into the education system. They are the materials that are used directly or indirectly to support, facilitate, influence, and encourage the mission and knowledge acquisition.

Adolade (1986) defines educational facilities as media-based instructional materials, aids, or devices that facilitate learning in the classroom. The term “facilities” refers to instructional materials such as objects, things, or instruments of analysis (concrete or non-concrete), as well as the teachers’ building, that are used as aids to understanding the content being taught.

Educational facilities are used to facilitate effective teaching and learning. There is a need for adequate educational facilities in such private and public primary schools for the proper operation of any educational system.

Private primary schools’ educational facilities should not be limited to a single subject; they should cover all areas of subject and teaching, whereas public primary schools’ educational facilities should not be limited to a single subject.

The success or failure of the systems is heavily dependent on the manpower and materials made available to it. Before establishing any public or private schools, they must consider where to teach, what to teach, who to teach, and what materials to use. (For example, there should be a building, students, and teaching aids.)

This compels the government to establish a national policy for primary education, i.e. the primary education philosophy, which are as follows:

Having a sense of national identity to raise political awareness among young people To assist individuals in identifying various cultural valves. to make her people self-sufficient to encourage technological and scientific advancement To assist the individual in developing better relationships with his fellow countrymen.

The following are the goals and objectives of establishing a primary school:

Giving them a broad understanding of how society works (culture, subcultures, commerce, and institutions, for example) fostering an appreciation for other people’s points of view and worth Students’ basic life skills should be developed (such as; literacy, numeracy, communication, ways of helping to achieve physical and mental health etc.)

To promote positive attitudes toward learning by catering to students’ interests that go beyond basic skills. To maximize the individual accomplishments of students To create an environment and procedures within the school that will aid in the achievement of other goals.

The government owns public primary schools and is responsible for teacher salaries, whereas private schools are owned by individuals or groups of people. They are well-established, but teachers are only paid a small amount of money.
