THE CONSTRAINTS TO THE EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION OF VOCATIONAL EDUCATION IN THE PRIVATE SECONDARY SCHOOL

The primary goal of this research was to identify the barriers to the effective implementation of vocational education programs in private secondary schools in Rivers State’s Port Harcourt Local Government Area. The study was restricted to four randomly chosen private secondary schools and addressed the following research questions:

What factors influence the non implementation of vocational education programs in Nigerian private secondary schools? What factors influence the non implementation of vocational education programs in Nigerian private secondary schools?

The primary data collection instrument was a questionnaire distributed to approximately 20% of the target population of Rivers State teachers (N=24) and students (N=72). Descriptive statistics, such as the sample mean and grand population mean, were used to analyze the data.

The findings reveal a shortage of professional and qualified teachers to teach vocational/technical subjects; inadequate infrastructure and equipment in schools; a lack of instructional materials and books in schools; and that schools are generally underfunded.

Two key recommendations are that adequate infrastructure be provided in schools to ensure that they are properly equipped for functional teaching and learning, and that a societal “enlightenment” campaign be carried out to emphasize the importance of technical and vocational education.
