The foundation of any effective organization rests on the shoulders of those who manage its daily operations, facilitate communication, and maintain institutional memory. In Nigeria’s civil service, particularly within Anambra State institutions, confidential secretaries occupy a position of profound significance that extends far beyond traditional administrative support. These professionals are not merely administrative functionaries; they are strategic operational assets whose competence directly influences organizational efficiency, public perception, and service delivery quality.

An organization cannot function effectively without competent secretarial staff. The confidential secretary serves as the essential pillar upon which institutional objectives rest. Whether in state-owned enterprises, government ministries, or civil service agencies across Anambra State, the success or failure of organizational missions depends significantly on the caliber of secretarial support provided. The impression created by the secretary directly shapes how the public and stakeholders perceive the organization, making their role fundamentally strategic rather than merely operational.

For students, researchers, and professionals studying organizational management, civil service administration, or human resource development in Nigeria, understanding the multifaceted roles of confidential secretaries within Anambra State institutions provides crucial insights into how administrative excellence drives institutional performance. PremiumResearchers specializes in providing comprehensive academic research support for scholars investigating organizational structures, administrative roles, and service delivery improvement strategies across Nigerian institutions.
Defining the Confidential Secretary: Understanding Professional Standards and Competencies

Professional Definition and Core Attributes

The term “confidential secretary” encompasses a professional role that has evolved significantly since its traditional conception. Modern definitions recognize the confidential secretary as an executive assistant possessing demonstrated mastery across multiple competency domains. Unlike historical perspectives that limited secretaries to clerical support roles, contemporary understanding positions confidential secretaries as professionals who must demonstrate the capacity to accept responsibility independently, exercise judgment without constant direct supervision, and represent organizational interests with authority and professionalism.

A truly professional confidential secretary possesses competencies spanning stenography, word-processing, computer operations, and information communication technology (ICT). These are not optional skills but fundamental requirements for effective performance in modern civil service environments. The professional confidential secretary in Anambra State institutions must possess:

Technical competence: Advanced proficiency in office equipment, digital communication platforms, data management systems, and organizational software

Communication mastery: Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities, including professional correspondence composition and executive communication support

Organizational acumen: Sophisticated scheduling, record management, and information systems administration

Discretion and confidentiality: Absolute reliability in handling sensitive organizational and executive information

Professional judgment: Capacity to make decisions and take initiative within defined parameters without constant supervision

Interpersonal excellence: Superior communication skills for managing relationships with diverse stakeholder groups

Classification of Secretary Types in Organizational Contexts

Understanding the distinct categories of secretarial positions helps clarify role expectations and competency requirements. Organizational researchers and administrative theorists, particularly in Nigerian institutional contexts, identify several secretary classifications:

Professional Confidential Secretary: This category represents secretaries who have acquired formal training, developed comprehensive skills, demonstrated ethical commitment, and maintained professional orientation toward their role. Professional confidential secretaries are experts in shorthand writing, typewriting, computer operations, and handling complex office routine activities. They possess formal qualifications and continuous professional development. This classification represents the standard expected in civil service institutions across Anambra State and other Nigerian states.

Honorary Confidential Secretary: This category includes individuals managing correspondence and records for societies, clubs, associations, or non-profit organizations, typically without formal secretarial training or formal certification. While performing secretarial functions, honorary secretaries lack the professional credentials and specialized skill development of professional secretaries.

Executive Secretary: A more senior classification combining secretarial functions with administrative management responsibilities, often serving as right-hand professionals to senior executives with expanded roles in office management, project coordination, and decision-support.

Administrative Assistant/Support Secretary: Professionals providing general administrative support across departments or organizations, often without specialization in a single executive’s direct support.

For Anambra State civil service institutions, the professional confidential secretary classification represents the ideal standard, ensuring that institutional representation and executive support meet contemporary professional expectations and service delivery standards.

Administrative Functions and Core Responsibilities of Confidential Secretaries

Administrative Organization and Control Functions

The administrative function represents one of the fundamental responsibility categories for confidential secretaries. Administrative functions involve organizing and controlling organizational activities to achieve institutional objectives effectively. These functions extend beyond simple task completion to encompassing strategic organizational support that enables executives to focus on substantive decision-making and leadership activities.

Core administrative functions include:

Organizational systems management: Designing, implementing, and maintaining office systems that enhance operational efficiency

Schedule and calendar management: Coordinating complex schedules, managing appointments, organizing meetings, and ensuring executive availability for priority activities

Document management: Filing systems organization, record maintenance, archival systems, and information retrieval coordination

Correspondence management: Composing professional letters, preparing memos, drafting communications on behalf of executives, and managing incoming/outgoing correspondence

Meeting administration: Preparing meeting agendas, coordinating attendees, recording minutes, and ensuring follow-up action items are tracked and completed

Supervision of support staff: Managing junior administrative staff, ensuring task completion, monitoring quality standards, and providing work direction

Resource coordination: Ensuring materials, equipment, and resources needed for task completion are available at appropriate times

Operational Execution and Day-to-Day Duties

Beyond strategic administrative organization, confidential secretaries manage detailed operational duties that keep organizational systems functioning daily. These duties, while sometimes appearing routine, require consistency, accuracy, and professional attention to detail. Confidential secretaries in civil service institutions typically handle:

Typing and word-processing of executive correspondence, reports, proposals, and official documentation

Email management and electronic communication coordination

Telephone reception and message management, ensuring executive availability and message accuracy

Visitor reception and office access coordination with professional courtesy

Travel arrangement coordination for official trips, conferences, and off-site events

Report preparation and data compilation supporting executive decision-making

Departmental record maintenance and regulatory compliance documentation

Disciplinary documentation and personnel file management

Database management and information system administration

Expense tracking, budget monitoring, and financial record keeping

These operational duties, when performed with excellence, create the infrastructure that allows executives to concentrate on strategic leadership rather than administrative detail management.

Interpersonal Skills and Customer Service Excellence in Secretarial Work

Understanding Customer Relationships in Secretarial Context

In contemporary organizational understanding, the term “customer” extends beyond external clients to encompass all stakeholders with whom secretaries interact. Administrators, colleagues, external visitors, contractors, partner organizations, and the general public all represent customers of secretarial services. Customers, in this comprehensive sense, are any individuals who receive services directly or indirectly through secretarial professional action.

The quality of interpersonal interactions significantly influences how customers perceive the organization. A secretary’s courtesy, responsiveness, professionalism, and competence create impressions that extend to organizational reputation. Recognizing the customer-facing nature of secretarial work elevates these roles from administrative support to organizational representation and customer experience management.

Essential Interpersonal Competency Areas

Research on organizational service delivery and customer satisfaction identifies specific interpersonal competencies that distinguish excellent secretaries from adequate ones:

Communication Excellence: Secretaries must communicate clearly, professionally, and appropriately across diverse contexts. This includes listening attentively, asking clarifying questions, ensuring message comprehension, and adapting communication styles to different audiences. Written communication through correspondence must be professional, grammatically correct, and appropriately formatted. Verbal communication with visitors, callers, and colleagues requires courtesy, clarity, and professional demeanor.

Emotional Intelligence: Understanding and managing emotional dimensions of interactions enhances relationship quality. Secretaries demonstrating emotional intelligence recognize frustration in callers, respond with empathy, maintain professionalism under pressure, and contribute to creating positive workplace culture. This competency is particularly crucial in civil service environments where public servants interact with citizens who may experience frustration with administrative processes.

Problem-solving and Initiative: Beyond implementing directives, excellent secretaries identify problems within their scope and propose solutions. When a customer’s needs cannot be immediately met, the secretary who understands organizational systems and resources can suggest alternatives and facilitate solutions, demonstrating customer-focused problem-solving.

Reliability and Dependability: Following through on commitments, meeting deadlines, maintaining confidentiality, and proving consistently reliable builds trust with executives, colleagues, and customers. Dependability extends to maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information, recognizing what information can be shared and protecting organizational privacy appropriately.

Professional Demeanor: Appearance, attitude, language, and comportment communicate professionalism. In Anambra State civil service institutions, professional appearance, punctuality, courteous behavior, and respectful communication reinforce the organization’s professional image and inspire confidence in organizational competence.

Conflict Resolution: Secretaries frequently encounter situations where customer expectations diverge from organizational capacity or policy. Handling these situations diplomatically while protecting organizational interests requires conflict resolution skills, tact, and professional judgment.

Technology and the Modern Office Environment: Adapting to Digital Transformation

The Dramatic Transformation of Office Landscapes

The office environment has undergone revolutionary transformation since the 1990s, with accelerating changes continuing through contemporary periods. Offices that once relied on typewriters, filing cabinets, and telephone-based communication now operate within sophisticated digital ecosystems. Modern offices transmit information through electronic mail, cloud-based document sharing, electronic calendars, video conferencing, and integrated communication platforms. Communication via technology now rivals and often exceeds oral and written communication importance in workplace environments.

These transformations, while creating new opportunities for efficiency and collaboration, simultaneously demand that confidential secretaries develop technological competencies beyond traditional secretarial training. The confidential secretary of the 2020s operates within a fundamentally different technological environment than their counterparts of even a decade ago. Anambra State civil service institutions, as they modernize and adopt contemporary administrative systems, increasingly require secretaries who can navigate complex digital environments confidently and competently.

Information and Communication Technology Competency Requirements

The confidential secretary functioning as organizational image maker and primary information source requires comprehensive Information and Communication Technology knowledge to perform contemporary roles effectively. ICT competency directly influences:

Information delivery speed: Digital systems enable rapid information production and transmission compared to traditional methods

Task completion efficiency: Modern tools allow secretaries to accomplish work requested by executives within shorter timeframes

Error reduction: Spell-checking, formatting tools, and digital organization systems minimize mistakes compared to manual processes

Productivity enhancement: Technological tools enable single secretaries to manage workloads that previously required multiple staff members

Data security: Understanding digital security, password management, and data protection is essential for protecting organizational information

System integration: Modern secretaries must integrate multiple software platforms, manage data across systems, and ensure information consistency

Essential ICT competencies for contemporary civil service secretaries include proficiency with word-processing software, spreadsheet applications, presentation tools, email systems, document management platforms, video conferencing systems, electronic calendar management, database systems, and basic cybersecurity awareness. The secretary lacking these competencies becomes a bottleneck rather than a facilitator, unable to manage modern information flows effectively.

Continuous Technological Adaptation and Professional Development

Technological change occurs at accelerating rates, requiring that secretaries commit to continuous learning and professional development. Training programs, workshops, and professional development initiatives must be maintained continuously rather than treated as one-time events. Anambra State institutions benefit significantly from establishing regular training schedules that keep secretarial staff current with emerging technologies, new software versions, and evolving digital best practices.

Organizations seeking to maintain competitive advantage recognize that investing in secretarial staff technological development yields measurable returns in productivity, error reduction, and service quality improvement.

Challenges Facing Confidential Secretaries in Anambra State Civil Service Institutions

Service Delivery Gaps and Customer Expectations

Despite the strategic importance of confidential secretaries, research on Nigerian civil service performance identifies significant gaps between customer expectations and actual service delivery. Confidential secretaries in Anambra State and other Nigerian public service organizations frequently fall short of stakeholder expectations. These gaps manifest in delayed response times, incomplete information provision, inconsistent communication quality, and perceived indifference to customer needs.

The root causes of these service delivery challenges are multifaceted, including insufficient training, inadequate resources, understaffing, unclear performance expectations, and organizational cultures that have not yet embraced customer-focused service mentality. Addressing these challenges requires comprehensive, multi-level interventions spanning organizational policy, resource allocation, staff development, and cultural change initiatives.

Resource Constraints and Professional Development Gaps

Many Anambra State civil service institutions face significant resource limitations that constrain their ability to maintain modern office equipment, software systems, and professional development programs. Aging computer systems, outdated software, limited internet bandwidth, and equipment maintenance backlogs create working environments where competent secretaries struggle to meet contemporary service standards. These constraints are not primarily attributable to staff incompetence but rather to organizational resource limitations.

Professional development represents another significant challenge. Secretarial staff often receive minimal training after initial employment, missing opportunities for skill enhancement, technological competency development, and exposure to contemporary best practices. Workshop attendance, conference participation, and formal training programs remain sporadic rather than systematic, leaving staff with stagnating skill sets in rapidly evolving technological environments.

Professional Recognition and Career Development Limitations

The secretarial profession, while strategically important, often experiences limited professional recognition and career advancement opportunities within Nigerian civil service structures. Salary scales may not reflect the professional competencies required, and career progression pathways remain limited compared to other professional tracks. This lack of recognition and career advancement can contribute to demoralization, reduced motivation, and brain drain as talented secretaries seek opportunities in private sector organizations offering better compensation and advancement prospects.

Strategies for Professional Development and Service Improvement

Systematic Competency Development Programs

Addressing service delivery challenges requires systematic, intentional competency development programs that span both technical and interpersonal skill domains. Effective programs include:

ICT skill development: Regular workshops addressing current software systems, emerging technologies, cybersecurity awareness, and digital best practices

Interpersonal skills training: Programs developing communication excellence, emotional intelligence, customer service orientation, and conflict resolution capabilities

Professional advancement programs: Structured opportunities for secretaries to pursue advanced certifications, pursue higher education, or develop specialized expertise

Leadership development: For experienced secretaries, programs preparing them for supervisory or administrative management roles

Industry-specific training: Programs addressing civil service regulations, administrative law, organizational policies, and sector-specific requirements

SERVICOM Principles and Service Charter Alignment

Nigeria’s SERVICOM (Service Compact With All Nigerians) initiative establishes principles and standards for service delivery in public institutions. The SERVICOM framework emphasizes service delivery quality, accountability, transparency, and responsiveness to citizen needs. Confidential secretaries, as frontline service delivery staff, play crucial roles in SERVICOM implementation within their organizations.

Aligning secretarial work with SERVICOM principles involves establishing service charters that clearly communicate response time standards, information availability commitments, communication protocols, and customer complaint resolution processes. Making these standards explicit and training secretarial staff in SERVICOM principles ensures consistent application across organizational units.

Resource and Infrastructure Investment

Improving service delivery requires deliberate resource investment in equipment, software, and infrastructure that enables secretarial excellence. Organizations must allocate budgets specifically for:

Modern computer systems with adequate processing power and current software

Reliable internet connectivity and communication systems

Document management and organizational software platforms

Equipment maintenance and regular technology upgrades

Professional development and training program funding

Adequate staffing levels that prevent overwhelming individual secretaries

Treating infrastructure investment as capital expenditure rather than discretionary budget items recognizes the fundamental importance of these investments to organizational effectiveness.

Performance Management and Accountability Structures

Clear performance expectations, regular feedback, and accountability mechanisms ensure that competency development translates into improved service delivery. Effective performance management includes:

Specific, measurable performance standards: Establishing clear expectations regarding response times, quality standards, and service metrics

Regular feedback mechanisms: Providing secretaries with consistent feedback on performance, strengths, and development areas

Customer feedback systems: Creating mechanisms for customers to provide feedback on service experiences, informing performance evaluation and development priorities

Recognition and incentive systems: Acknowledging excellent performance through recognition, incentives, and advancement opportunities

Consequence systems: Implementing clear consequences for performance shortcomings while providing support for improvement

Understanding Research on Secretarial Excellence and Organizational Performance

Evidence-Based Understanding of Secretarial Impact

Rigorous research on secretarial roles and organizational performance provides evidence that competent secretaries significantly influence institutional effectiveness. Descriptive survey research, the methodology commonly employed to assess secretarial competencies across organizations, gathers systematic data on current practices, perceived challenges, and improvement priorities. Such research typically involves surveying representative samples of secretaries and customers across multiple organizational units, allowing researchers to draw conclusions about broader patterns and trends.

Research across Anambra State civil service institutions has identified that secretaries applying comprehensive interpersonal and resource skills to high degrees demonstrate superior service delivery performance compared to colleagues applying these skills inconsistently or inadequately. This research finding underscores the strategic importance of systematic skill development and performance management interventions.

For academic researchers, students developing thesis or dissertation projects, or organizational development professionals seeking to improve secretarial performance in their institutions, understanding the empirical evidence supporting secretarial development investments is crucial. PremiumResearchers provides expert guidance on research methodologies for studies examining organizational roles, service delivery, and professional development. Whether you’re conducting research on civil service administration, studying organizational efficiency factors, or investigating customer service improvement, our expertise in research proposal development and academic writing ensures your research methodology aligns with contemporary standards while yielding credible, actionable findings.

Practical Recommendations for Anambra State Civil Service Institutions

Recruitment and Hiring Standards Enhancement

Recommendation 1: Establish clear competency standards for confidential secretary recruitment that ensure only professionally qualified individuals with proven ICT skills and professional training are employed. Recruitment standards should require:

Formal secretarial training or equivalent professional qualifications

Demonstrated proficiency with office software and digital systems

Written communication competency evidenced through application materials

Interpersonal skill assessment during interview processes

Reference verification confirming prior professional performance

Establishing rigorous recruitment standards ensures that new secretaries enter civil service positions with foundational competencies, reducing training burden on employing institutions while improving initial service quality levels.

Dedicated Professional Development Investment

Recommendation 2: Allocate dedicated budgets to support regular professional development through workshops, seminars, conferences, and formal training programs. Professional development investments should address:

Emerging technology adoption and digital skill development

Interpersonal and customer service skill enhancement

SERVICOM principle implementation and service charter compliance

Civil service regulation and policy updates

Professional certification and credential development

Treating professional development as ongoing rather than episodic ensures secretarial staff remain current with contemporary practices and technologies. Organizations establishing annual development budgets specifically for secretarial staff development demonstrate commitment to professional growth and signal that secretarial positions merit institutional investment.

Technology Infrastructure Modernization and Maintenance

Recommendation 3: Establish capital and operating budgets specifically allocated for office technology, software systems, and equipment maintenance. Infrastructure funding should ensure:

Regular computer system upgrades maintaining contemporary processing capability

Current software licensing and regular version updates

Reliable internet connectivity supporting modern communication

Document management and organizational software platforms

Preventive equipment maintenance reducing unexpected downtime

Cybersecurity systems protecting organizational information

Technology infrastructure represents foundational capacity enabling secretarial excellence. Organizations struggling with outdated equipment, slow internet connectivity, or aging software cannot reasonably expect secretarial staff to deliver contemporary service standards regardless of individual competence levels.

Performance Measurement and Accountability Systems

Recommendation 4: Implement comprehensive performance measurement systems establishing clear expectations, measuring actual performance, and providing regular feedback. Effective systems include:

Service standards: Clearly defined response time standards, quality expectations, and service metrics

Customer feedback mechanisms: Regular collection of feedback from customers regarding service experiences

Performance monitoring: Regular assessment of performance against established standards

Feedback processes: Regular communication of performance data to individual secretaries

Recognition and incentives: Acknowledgment of exceptional performance through recognition, incentives, or advancement opportunities

Improvement support: Coaching, training, or mentoring for staff not meeting established standards

Career Progression and Professional Recognition

Recommendation 5: Establish career progression pathways and salary scales that recognize secretarial professional competencies appropriately. Enhanced recognition and progression opportunities include:

Senior secretarial positions for experienced staff with expanded responsibilities

Salary scales reflecting professional competency levels and experience

Opportunities for advancement into administrative management or specialized roles

Professional development support enabling pursuit of higher qualifications

Public recognition of exceptional performance and contributions

When civil service institutions treat secretarial positions as professional roles with meaningful career progression, they attract and retain talented individuals, reducing turnover and improving institutional knowledge continuity.

The Broader Impact: Secretarial Excellence and Organizational Reputation

The investments in secretarial professional development, technology infrastructure, and performance management systems yield returns extending far beyond incremental efficiency improvements. Enhanced secretarial service delivery directly influences how citizens, partner organizations, contractors, and stakeholders perceive Anambra State civil service institutions. A citizen receiving courteous, responsive, and professional service from secretarial staff develops confidence in the institution’s competence and concern for public welfare. Conversely, negative secretarial interactions create lasting impressions of institutional indifference and incompetence that damage organizational reputation and erode public trust in governance institutions.

In an era of increasing public scrutiny of civil service performance and widespread communication via social media, organizational reputation rests significantly on frontline staff interactions. Confidential secretaries, as visible representatives of organizations, bear responsibility for creating positive public impressions and demonstrating institutional professionalism. Supporting secretarial excellence through comprehensive development, adequate resources, and meaningful recognition becomes an investment in institutional reputation and public sector credibility.

Understanding the Purpose of Your Thesis Conclusion

When you’re nearing the end of your thesis, dissertation, or major research project, you’re likely feeling a mix of relief and uncertainty. You’ve conducted extensive research, analyzed data, and presented your findings. But now comes a critical section that many students struggle with: the conclusion. This is your final opportunity to leave a lasting impression on your reader and demonstrate the true value of your work.

The conclusion chapter or section serves a fundamental purpose that’s often misunderstood. It’s not merely a place to wrap up loose ends or remind readers what you’ve already told them. Instead, it’s your moment to step back, reflect deeply on what you’ve discovered, and explain why it matters. Think of it as the crescendo of your academic work, where you synthesize everything you’ve presented and show your reader the bigger picture.

If you find yourself struggling with this critical section, know that you’re not alone. Many students underestimate the importance of a well-crafted conclusion, which can significantly impact how their work is received. This is precisely why PremiumResearchers specializes in helping students master their thesis conclusions. Our team of experienced academic writers understands that a strong conclusion can mean the difference between an acceptable thesis and an exceptional one. Whether you need guidance on crafting your conclusion or professional assistance from start to finish, we’re here to help you create a conclusion that truly stands out.

What Your Conclusion Should Actually Accomplish

Your conclusion has three primary missions. First, it should reinforce your research aim and demonstrate how you’ve fulfilled your objectives. Second, it should connect your findings back to the theoretical framework and existing literature you reviewed. Third, it should articulate the significance and implications of your work for your field, your industry, and the broader academic community.

This is fundamentally different from summarizing your work. Many students make the mistake of turning their conclusion into an extended abstract, recounting everything they’ve already presented. Your readers have already seen your findings section. They don’t need you to repeat it. What they need from your conclusion is insight, analysis, and perspective that only you can provide as the researcher who has lived with this project.

Connect Your Findings to Your Literature Review

One of the most critical elements of an effective conclusion is demonstrating how your findings relate to the existing body of knowledge in your field. During your literature review, you identified gaps, contradictions, and areas where previous research fell short. Now, in your conclusion, you need to explicitly show how your research addresses these gaps or advances the conversation.

Ask yourself these important questions as you write this section:

Do my findings align with what previous researchers have discovered, or do they challenge established knowledge?

If my results confirm previous studies, what new context or industry do they apply to?

Have I discovered something that contradicts earlier research, and if so, what might explain this contradiction?

Do my findings complement existing research by adding a different perspective or methodology?

How do my results extend the boundaries of current knowledge in my field?

For example, imagine your thesis investigates employee motivation strategies in Nigerian tech startups. Your literature review referenced international studies on motivation that were primarily conducted in Western corporate environments. In your conclusion, you’d explain how your findings either confirm these international theories within the Nigerian context or reveal unique cultural factors that create different motivation drivers.

Positioning Your Work Within the Academic Landscape

This positioning is crucial because it demonstrates that you haven’t conducted your research in a vacuum. You’ve considered what came before, understood the current state of knowledge, and contributed something meaningful to the conversation. This is what separates a merely adequate conclusion from an exceptional one.

When connecting your findings to literature, be specific. Don’t just say “my results support previous research.” Instead, explain exactly which studies, theories, or frameworks your work validates, extends, or challenges. Use direct citations and create explicit connections. This specificity shows rigor and builds credibility.

Restate Your Research Aim and How Objectives Were Met

Early in your conclusion, you should explicitly remind your reader of your original research aim. This isn’t a lengthy restatement, but rather a clear reminder of what you set out to achieve. Then, systematically demonstrate how you met each objective you established in your introduction.

If you had multiple research objectives, address each one individually. Show what you did to fulfill that objective, what you discovered, and how that discovery contributes to answering your overarching research question. This systematic approach provides clarity and demonstrates thorough, organized thinking.

Consider this structure for each objective:

State the objective clearly

Briefly describe the approach you took to address it

Summarize the key finding related to this objective

Explain how this finding advances understanding in your field

Closing the Research Loop

By systematically addressing each objective, you create a sense of completion and closure. Your reader can clearly see that you’ve delivered on the promises you made at the beginning of your work. This fulfills a fundamental expectation of academic writing and strengthens the overall credibility of your thesis or dissertation.

Include Your Personal Reflection and Significance

This is where your conclusion becomes truly personal and unique. Beyond the mechanics of connecting findings to literature and addressing objectives, your conclusion should include your informed reflection on what you’ve discovered. This is the section where only you can provide value, because only you have conducted this specific research journey.

Consider these reflection questions:

What surprised you about your findings?

What is the practical significance of what you’ve discovered?

How will your work influence your field or industry?

What contribution does your research make to broader academic conversations?

Who benefits from knowing what you’ve discovered, and how?

What doors does your research open for future investigation?

Your personal reflection should answer the fundamental question: why does this matter? Why should anyone care about your findings beyond the academic requirement to complete a thesis or dissertation? What real-world impact could your work have?

Demonstrating Multiple Levels of Significance

When articulating significance, consider multiple dimensions. How does your work contribute to:

Academic Contribution: Does it challenge existing theories, validate new approaches, or fill a research gap?

Industry Impact: Can practitioners use your findings to improve processes, make better decisions, or solve problems?

Social Contribution: Does your work address issues that affect communities, organizations, or society at large?

Methodological Advancement: Did you employ or develop new research methods that others might adopt?

How to Get Complete Project Materials

Getting your complete project material (Chapter 1-5, References, and all documentation) is simple and fast:

This is perhaps the most important distinction to understand: your conclusion is not your abstract or summary. This is where many students go wrong. They approach their conclusion as an opportunity to condense everything they’ve written into a few paragraphs, essentially retelling their entire thesis in miniature form.

Let’s be clear about what each section accomplishes:

Abstract: Provides a concise overview (typically one page) of your entire research project, including your research question, methodology, findings, and conclusions. It’s designed to give readers a quick understanding of what you’ve done.

Summary sections within chapters: Recap key points within individual chapters to help readers consolidate information.

Conclusion: Synthesizes and reflects on what you’ve learned, connects your work to the broader academic conversation, and explains why it matters. It’s analytical and reflective, not recapitulative.

What Your Conclusion Should Include Instead

Rather than summarizing your findings, your conclusion should:

Briefly remind readers of your research aim and objectives (not describe your entire methodology or all findings)

Reflect critically on what your findings mean

Connect your work to existing literature and theoretical frameworks

Discuss the implications of your findings

Acknowledge limitations of your work

Suggest directions for future research

Articulate the value and significance of your contribution

This distinction is crucial because your conclusion should demonstrate intellectual maturity and critical thinking. If it simply repeats what you’ve already written, you’re missing the opportunity to show that you’ve truly internalized and can meaningfully interpret your own research.

Highlight Why Your Work Matters

In a well-crafted conclusion, you must explicitly articulate the importance of your work. Don’t assume readers will understand why your research matters. Make it clear, direct, and compelling.

This means moving beyond academic language to explain real-world implications. If your thesis is about optimizing supply chain management in small enterprises, don’t just say “the findings contribute to supply chain literature.” Instead, explain that small business owners can implement these strategies to reduce costs by X percent, improve delivery times, or enhance customer satisfaction.

Making Your Work Relevant to Your Audience

Consider who will read your conclusion. Your supervisor, your examination committee, other academic researchers in your field, and potentially practitioners who might apply your findings. Ensure you’ve addressed the “so what?” question for each of these audiences.

Your conclusion should make readers think, “This research was worth doing, and these findings will influence how I think about this topic or how I work in this field.” That’s the impact you’re aiming for.

Final Recommendations for Writing Your Conclusion

As you approach writing your conclusion, keep these evidence-based recommendations in mind:

1. Be Specific, Not Generic

Avoid vague statements like “this research is important” or “future studies could explore this further.” Instead, be specific about who will benefit from your work, how they’ll benefit, and what specific future research directions are most promising given your findings.

2. Acknowledge Limitations Honestly

A strong conclusion includes honest discussion of your work’s limitations. Did your sample size constrain generalizability? Were there time or resource constraints? Were certain populations underrepresented? Acknowledging these limitations doesn’t weaken your conclusion; it demonstrates intellectual honesty and helps readers understand the appropriate scope of your findings.

3. Avoid Introducing New Information

Your conclusion should synthesize and reflect on what you’ve already presented. This isn’t the place to introduce new findings, new literature, or new arguments that you haven’t previously discussed. Save new material for the body of your thesis.

4. Maintain Academic Tone While Being Clear

Your conclusion should remain academically rigorous, but it can be more accessible than earlier chapters. You can use more straightforward language to explain implications and significance. This makes your conclusion memorable and impactful.

5. Consult Your Supervisor About Expectations

Different supervisors and institutions have varying expectations for conclusions. Some prefer more emphasis on practical implications, others on theoretical contributions. Some want future research directions prominently featured, while others don’t. Before finalizing your conclusion, clarify your supervisor’s expectations and preferences.

6. Consider Professional Feedback

Common Mistakes to Avoid in Your Thesis Conclusion

Understanding what not to do is just as important as knowing what you should do. Many talented researchers undermine their excellent work with poorly executed conclusions. Here are the most common pitfalls:

Mistake 1: Treating Your Conclusion as a Summary

As discussed earlier, concluding by simply recapping your findings weakens your work. Your reader already knows what you found. They need you to explain why it matters and how it fits into the broader academic landscape.

Mistake 2: Introducing New Data or Arguments

Save all new information for the body of your thesis. Your conclusion is for synthesis and reflection, not for presenting findings you haven’t previously discussed. Introducing new material here confuses readers and suggests poor planning.

Mistake 3: Overstating Your Findings

While you should highlight the significance of your work, avoid exaggerating its importance or claiming broader applicability than your research actually supports. If your study examined only large enterprises, don’t claim your findings apply to small businesses. Integrity in academic writing is paramount.

Mistake 4: Using Vague Future Research Suggestions

Generic suggestions like “future research could explore this topic” or “more studies are needed” don’t add value. Instead, be specific about what future research directions emerge logically from your findings and why they’re important.

Mistake 5: Ending With a Weak or Apologetic Tone

Don’t end your conclusion with hedging language like “while this research is limited,” “although more work is needed,” or “despite these constraints.” While acknowledging limitations is important, your conclusion should end on a note of confident contribution, not apology. You’ve done serious work; conclude by standing behind it.

What a Strong Conclusion Looks Like: Example Framework

To help you visualize what we’ve discussed, here’s a structural framework for a strong conclusion:

Opening Sentences (2-3 sentences): Restate your research aim and primary objectives in clear, straightforward language. This reminds readers what you set out to accomplish.

Addressing Objectives (1-2 paragraphs): Systematically explain how your research addressed each key objective and what you discovered in relation to each.

Connecting to Literature (1-2 paragraphs): Discuss how your findings relate to existing research. Do they confirm, challenge, extend, or contradict previous work?

Significance and Implications (1-2 paragraphs): Explain why your findings matter. Who benefits? What changes might result from your work? What problems does it help solve?

Limitations and Boundaries (1 paragraph): Honestly acknowledge what your research couldn’t address or limitations that affect its generalizability.

Future Directions (1 paragraph): Suggest specific avenues for future research that logically follow from your findings.

Closing Statement (2-3 sentences): End with a confident articulation of your contribution to the field.

This framework isn’t rigid. Your specific conclusion may emphasize different elements depending on your field, your supervisor’s expectations, and the nature of your research. However, this structure ensures you cover all the essential components of a strong conclusion.

Field-Specific Considerations for Your Conclusion

While the principles we’ve discussed apply across disciplines, different fields sometimes emphasize different aspects in conclusions.

In Sciences and Engineering

Conclusions often emphasize the practical applications of findings and their implications for future research or technological development. There’s typically strong emphasis on limitations and what questions remain unanswered.

In Social Sciences and Business

Conclusions frequently emphasize implications for policy, practice, and organizational decision-making. There’s often discussion of how findings might influence professional practice or institutional policies.

In Humanities

Conclusions might emphasize the broader cultural, historical, or philosophical implications of your interpretations. There’s often stronger emphasis on voice and perspective.

Regardless of your field, check your department’s thesis guidelines and discuss expectations with your supervisor to ensure your conclusion aligns with discipline-specific conventions.

Ready to Write or Refine Your Conclusion?

Crafting an effective conclusion requires careful thought, critical reflection, and often multiple revisions. Many students find this process challenging because it requires stepping back from the detailed work of research to think strategically about what it all means. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or uncertain about your approach, remember that help is available.

Frequently Asked Questions About Writing Your Thesis Conclusion

How long should my conclusion be?

There’s no universal rule, but conclusions typically comprise 5-10% of your total thesis length. A 10,000-word dissertation might have a 500-1000 word conclusion. However, always check your department’s specific guidelines. The key is that your conclusion should be long enough to adequately address all necessary elements without becoming repetitive. Quality and content matter more than length.

Can I use first person in my conclusion?

This depends on your field and your institution’s preferences. In many disciplines, particularly sciences, third person is preferred. However, in social sciences, humanities, and qualitative research, first person is often acceptable and can be effective in articulating your personal reflection on findings. When discussing your own research process and interpretation, phrases like “I found” or “we observed” can actually strengthen clarity and authenticity. Check your guidelines or ask your supervisor about preferences.

Should I discuss limitations in my conclusion?

Yes, absolutely. A strong conclusion includes honest discussion of your work’s limitations. This demonstrates intellectual honesty and helps readers understand the appropriate scope and applicability of your findings. However, balance this by also articulating why these limitations don’t undermine the value of your contribution. Rather than apologizing for limitations, explain how future research can address them.

How do I avoid making my conclusion too broad or making claims I can’t support?

Be specific about the scope of your research and the generalizability of your findings. If your research examined small businesses in Lagos, don’t claim your findings apply to all of Nigeria or all businesses globally. Use qualified language: “within this context” or “for organizations similar to those studied.” Base all claims on evidence you’ve actually presented in your thesis. When suggesting broader implications, frame them as possibilities worth investigating in future research rather than certainties.

What’s the difference between my conclusion and my recommendations section (if I have one)?

Your conclusion discusses what your research found and why it matters. A recommendations section (common in applied research like management or policy studies) goes further to specifically suggest actions that stakeholders should take based on your findings. Not all theses include recommendations. If yours does, recommendations typically come after your conclusion and represent concrete, actionable suggestions based on your research.

Why Your Statement of Problem Matters More Than You Think

If you’re starting your final year project or research thesis, you’ve probably heard that your statement of problem is critical. But do you understand why? Your statement of problem isn’t just a formality or a box to check—it’s the most persuasive section of your entire project. It’s where you convince your supervisor, your examiners, and ultimately your readers that your research deserves attention and resources.

The harsh reality is this: a weak statement of problem can sink even brilliant research. Conversely, a compelling statement of problem can make reviewers overlook minor weaknesses in your methodology because they’re convinced the problem you’re solving truly matters. This section determines whether your project gets approval, funding, or interest from the academic community.

Here’s the challenge most Nigerian students face: while everyone knows a statement of problem is important, many struggle to write one that truly resonates. They either make it too vague (“Technology is changing things”), too broad (“The world has problems”), or too focused on definitions rather than demonstrating real impact. This is precisely where many projects lose marks unnecessarily—not because the research itself is weak, but because it wasn’t presented compellingly.

This is where PremiumResearchers comes in. We’ve helped hundreds of Nigerian students and postgraduate researchers craft statement of problems that don’t just meet requirements—they impress. Our team understands what lecturers at institutions like UNILAG, University of Nigeria, and other major universities are looking for. More importantly, we understand the specific structure and evidence that makes a statement of problem undeniably compelling.

But whether you work with us or write it yourself, understanding the 5-paragraph technique we’re about to share will transform how you approach this critical section. Let’s dive in.

Understanding the 5-Paragraph Technique for Writing a Statement of Problem

The 5-paragraph approach to writing a statement of problem isn’t arbitrary. It mirrors the way humans naturally think about problems and how researchers intuitively structure their arguments. Think of it as a narrative arc: you establish the setting (broader context), introduce the conflict (specific problem), acknowledge previous attempts at resolution (literature gaps), explain the stakes (consequences), and point toward a solution (research direction).

Each paragraph builds systematically on the one before it, creating momentum that naturally leads readers toward understanding why your research needs to happen. This structure ensures you include all essential elements without overwhelming readers or getting lost in unnecessary details.

Here’s why this technique works consistently:

Creates logical flow: Moves readers from broad context to your specific research focus in a way that feels natural, not forced

Ensures completeness: You won’t accidentally skip critical elements like discussing existing research or explaining consequences

Maintains focus: Forces you to stay disciplined and avoid common pitfalls like excessive definitions or tangential information

Blends evidence with narrative: Allows you to weave statistics and research findings into a compelling story rather than just listing facts

Impresses supervisors: Shows structured, sophisticated thinking that examiners recognize and reward

The Five Paragraphs Explained

Paragraph 1: Context & Trend

Sets the broader landscape of your research area

Highlights relevant trends, developments, or shifts in your field

Establishes why this area matters on a bigger scale

Provides statistics or evidence showing momentum in this field

Paragraph 2: Specific Problem

Narrows focus from the broader context to your specific research area

Presents concrete examples, case studies, or evidence of the problem

Shows real-world implications and who is affected

Demonstrates that the problem is measurable and significant

Paragraph 3: Previous Efforts & Knowledge Gap

Acknowledges existing research, solutions, or initiatives

Identifies limitations, shortcomings, or why these efforts are insufficient

Articulates clearly what’s missing in current knowledge or practice

Shows why existing solutions don’t fully address the problem

Paragraph 4: Consequences & Implications

Explains what happens if the problem remains unaddressed

Highlights urgency and importance to stakeholders

Links consequences to broader economic, social, or organizational impacts

Makes clear that solving this problem matters beyond just academic interest

Paragraph 5: Research Direction & Value

Briefly indicates your intended research approach or focus

Links naturally to your research questions and objectives

Shows the potential value and applications of your research

Identifies who will benefit from your findings

Complete Example: Digital Financial Inclusion in Nigeria

Let’s walk through a complete, real-world example of a statement of problem using our 5-paragraph technique. This example addresses digital financial inclusion in rural Nigeria—a topic many Nigerian researchers are investigating. As you read, notice how each paragraph serves its specific function and builds naturally on the previous one.

Paragraph 1: Context & Trend

The rapid digitalization of financial services has transformed global banking landscapes, with mobile banking and digital payments becoming increasingly central to financial inclusion initiatives worldwide. In Africa, mobile money users grew from 277 million in 2016 to over 562 million by 2021, marking a significant shift in how populations access financial services. Nigeria, despite being Africa’s largest economy, has seen relatively slower adoption of digital financial services, with only 45% of adults having access to digital banking platforms, significantly below the government’s target of 80% financial inclusion. This disparity suggests that while global and continental trends are moving toward digital finance, Nigeria faces unique barriers that have prevented mainstream adoption despite the enabling environment.

Why this works: This opening establishes the broader context (global digitalization trend), provides credible statistics (277 million to 562 million users), narrows focus to Nigeria, and ends by suggesting there’s a problem. It doesn’t define digital finance or explain what mobile money is—it assumes readers understand these basics and focuses on the gap in Nigeria’s performance.

Paragraph 2: Specific Problem

Despite significant investments in digital banking infrastructure, rural communities in Nigeria face persistent barriers to digital financial adoption. Recent surveys indicate that 67% of rural adults remain unbanked, with limited access to smartphones, unreliable internet connectivity, and low digital literacy emerging as primary obstacles. In Northern Nigeria particularly, only 23% of rural women have access to digital financial services, creating a significant gender gap in financial inclusion. These barriers persist even as traditional banking branches continue to close in rural areas due to profitability concerns, leaving many communities without any formal financial services whatsoever. This creates a situation where rural Nigerians are simultaneously abandoned by traditional banking and unable to access digital alternatives.

Why this works: The focus tightens to the specific problem (rural communities), uses concrete statistics (67% unbanked, 23% for women), identifies specific barriers, and shows real consequences (bank closures). The final sentence synthesizes the problem into a compelling statement that sets up why this needs to be solved.

Paragraph 3: Previous Efforts & Knowledge Gap

While various stakeholders have attempted to address digital financial inclusion through initiatives like mobile money agents, simplified Know-Your-Customer (KYC) requirements, and government-funded literacy programs, these efforts have yielded limited success in rural areas. Government policies focused on infrastructure development have primarily benefited urban centers, while digital literacy programs designed for urban populations don’t account for the unique context of rural communities. Current research has extensively documented access barriers and technical obstacles, but offers limited insight into effective strategies for overcoming cultural resistance and building trust in digital financial services among rural populations, particularly among women and elderly citizens who are most likely to distrust digital systems.

Why this works: Acknowledges that efforts exist (mobile money agents, literacy programs), explains why they haven’t worked (focus on urban areas), and identifies the specific research gap (cultural factors and trust-building). This is where you demonstrate you’ve done your literature review and understand what’s already been attempted.

Paragraph 4: Consequences & Implications

The persistent digital financial exclusion of rural communities carries significant socioeconomic implications for Nigeria’s development trajectory. Without access to digital financial services, rural small businesses struggle to participate in e-commerce and digital value chains, limiting their growth potential and contribution to the national economy. The lack of digital financial access also hampers the effectiveness of government social welfare and emergency programs—a lesson painfully learned during the COVID-19 pandemic when rural residents couldn’t receive direct cash transfers due to lack of registered digital accounts. Furthermore, continued reliance on cash transactions exposes rural populations to security risks, prevents them from building formal credit histories, and perpetuates the cycle of financial exclusion that disadvantages rural communities economically.

Why this works: Shows clear consequences (limited business growth, inability to receive government transfers, security risks) that extend beyond just the research interest. The COVID-19 reference grounds this in real experience many readers understand. This paragraph creates urgency and makes clear that this problem affects real people and the nation’s economy.

Paragraph 5: Research Direction & Value

This research aims to investigate effective strategies for increasing digital financial adoption in rural Nigeria, with particular focus on addressing cultural barriers and building institutional trust. By examining successful cases of digital financial inclusion in similar rural African contexts and analyzing how community-based approaches can foster trust, this study seeks to develop a practical framework for sustainable digital financial inclusion that accounts for local cultural nuances and practical constraints. The findings will be valuable for policymakers designing financial inclusion programs, financial institutions developing rural strategies, development organizations implementing inclusion projects, and contribute to the broader academic understanding of how trust and cultural factors influence technology adoption in developing economies.

Why this works: Clearly states what you’ll investigate (cultural barriers and trust), indicates your approach (examining successful cases, analyzing community approaches), and identifies concrete beneficiaries (policymakers, financial institutions, development organizations). It doesn’t promise to solve the problem—just to contribute valuable insights.

Note: Notice throughout this example that we haven’t included long definitions, haven’t gone off on tangents, and haven’t tried to cover everything about financial inclusion. We’ve stayed tightly focused on a specific problem in a specific context. This focus is what makes statements of problem powerful.

Second Example: Cybersecurity in Nigerian SMEs

Here’s another complete statement of problem example, this time addressing cybersecurity vulnerabilities in Nigerian Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). This example shows how the 5-paragraph technique works across different research contexts.

Paragraph 1: Context & Trend

The exponential growth of digital transformation among businesses globally has made cybersecurity a critical concern, with cyber attacks causing estimated annual losses of $6 trillion worldwide. In Nigeria, the rapid adoption of digital tools for business operations—accelerated by pandemic-driven remote work adoption—has created new vulnerabilities and expanded the attack surface for malicious actors. Recent industry reports indicate a 177% increase in cyber attacks targeting Nigerian businesses between 2020 and 2023, with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) becoming increasingly attractive targets due to their typically weaker security infrastructure compared to enterprise-level organizations.

Paragraph 2: Specific Problem

Despite the escalating threat landscape, Nigerian SMEs demonstrate alarming unpreparedness for cyber threats. A recent industry assessment reveals that 82% of Nigerian SMEs lack basic cybersecurity protocols such as firewalls, antivirus software, or employee security awareness training. A 2023 cybersecurity report found that 67% of Nigerian SMEs experienced at least one cyber attack in the past year, with average losses of ₦3.5 million per incident—a devastating amount for businesses with limited financial buffers. More concerning, 73% of affected businesses lack formal incident response plans, leaving them vulnerable to repeated attacks and potentially catastrophic data breaches that could force permanent closure.

Paragraph 3: Previous Efforts & Knowledge Gap

While comprehensive cybersecurity frameworks and solutions exist for enterprise-level organizations, these resources prove impractical or financially unfeasible for SMEs operating with limited budgets and technical expertise. Current research predominantly examines technical security solutions and frameworks designed for large organizations with dedicated IT departments and significant security investments. Existing studies have paid insufficient attention to the unique constraints facing Nigerian SMEs—limited IT expertise, budget restrictions, and resource limitations—or the critical role that organizational culture and employee behavior play in cybersecurity readiness within this specific context. This creates a significant gap between available cybersecurity solutions and the practical needs of resource-constrained Nigerian SMEs.

Paragraph 4: Consequences & Implications

The continued vulnerability of Nigerian SMEs to cyber threats poses risks extending far beyond individual businesses. Compromised SMEs often serve as entry points for attackers to penetrate larger organizations within their supply chains, threatening the integrity of entire business ecosystems and financial networks. The financial impact of successful attacks forces many SMEs to either cease operations entirely or revert to less efficient manual processes, undermining Nigeria’s broader digital transformation agenda. Moreover, the lack of confidence in cybersecurity capabilities discourages SMEs from adopting potentially beneficial digital tools and platforms, hampering their competitiveness in an increasingly digital marketplace and limiting their growth potential.

Paragraph 5: Research Direction & Value

This study seeks to develop a practical, cost-effective cybersecurity framework specifically tailored to the needs and capabilities of Nigerian SMEs. By examining successful cybersecurity practices among resource-constrained organizations and analyzing the behavioral and organizational culture aspects of cybersecurity implementation, this research aims to bridge the gap between theoretical security frameworks and practical implementation challenges. The findings will contribute to both academic understanding of SME cybersecurity in developing economies and provide actionable guidelines that business owners, managers, and policymakers can implement immediately to strengthen their organizations’ security posture.

Best Practices and Professional Tips for Writing Your Statement of Problem

Now that you understand the structure, here are proven practices that make statements of problem truly shine. These are techniques we use at PremiumResearchers when crafting statements of problem for clients, and they work consistently across disciplines.

1. Ground Everything in Recent, Credible Evidence

Never make claims without evidence. Every significant statement in your problem statement should be supported by data, research, or established facts. Use statistics from reputable sources (peer-reviewed journals, government reports, international organizations). Avoid vague phrases like “many people” or “it’s widely known”—instead, cite the actual number and source: “67% of rural adults remain unbanked, according to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s 2023 financial inclusion survey.”

When citing statistics, consider the publication date and relevance. Try to use the most recent data available, but don’t force outdated statistics just to fill space. Examiners notice and penalize weak evidence choices.

2. Maintain Relentless Focus on Your Specific Problem

The statement of problem should be tightly focused, not broadly ambitious. Don’t try to address every aspect of your research area. Instead, identify the specific problem within the broader context. Compare these two approaches:

Too Broad: “Digital financial services have many challenges in Nigeria.”

Appropriately Focused: “Rural women in Nigeria face specific barriers—limited smartphone access, unreliable connectivity, and low digital literacy—that prevent them from adopting digital financial services, while existing solutions fail to address the trust and cultural factors that drive adoption decisions.”

The focused version clearly delineates what problem you’re addressing, who it affects, and why existing solutions are insufficient. This clarity is what gets projects approved.

3. Use Strategic Transition Sentences Between Paragraphs

Your five paragraphs should feel connected, not like separate essays. Use transition sentences that bridge paragraphs. For example:

“While these global trends are encouraging, Nigeria presents a starkly different picture…” (transitions from global context to Nigeria-specific problem).

“Government initiatives and private sector efforts have attempted to address these barriers, yet significant gaps remain…” (transitions from problem to existing solutions/gaps).

These connectors create the “story” quality that makes strong problem statements memorable and persuasive.

4. Show Impact Through Specific Examples, Not General Claims

Instead of saying “the problem has serious consequences,” give concrete examples:

Weak: “This problem has important implications.”

Strong: “During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Federal Government attempted to disburse emergency cash transfers to vulnerable households, but 34% of intended recipients couldn’t receive payments because they lacked registered digital accounts, demonstrating how financial exclusion becomes a humanitarian issue during crises.”

Specific examples demonstrate depth of understanding and make the problem real to readers.

5. Acknowledge the Problem’s Complexity Without Getting Lost in It

Sophisticated problem statements recognize that problems are multifaceted. Your job isn’t to solve everything—it’s to identify and focus on a specific, manageable aspect. For example: “While digital financial exclusion results from multiple factors including infrastructure, policy, and individual behavior, this study focuses specifically on the trust and cultural factors that prevent adoption, as current research provides limited understanding in this area.”

This shows intellectual maturity and realistic scope.

6. Avoid Lengthy Definitions—They Weaken Your Problem Statement

Many students waste valuable space defining terms. Don’t write: “Digital financial inclusion refers to the provision of financial services to previously unbanked populations through digital channels, which includes mobile money, internet banking, and digital wallets.” This belongs in your literature review or definition of terms section, not your problem statement.

If you must mention a term readers might not know, define it briefly in passing: “digital financial services (mobile money, internet banking, and digital wallets)” rather than dedicating sentences to it.

7. Prefer Active Voice and Dynamic Language

Passive and weak: “It has been observed that barriers exist to digital financial inclusion in rural areas.”

Active and strong: “Rural communities face persistent barriers to digital financial inclusion, including limited smartphone access, unreliable internet connectivity, and insufficient digital literacy.”

Active voice creates energy and conviction. It makes your problem statement more compelling and easier to read.

Common Mistakes That Weaken Your Statement of Problem

Understanding what NOT to do is just as important as knowing what to do. Here are the mistakes we see most frequently in student problem statements—and how to avoid them.

Mistake 1: Making Claims Without Evidence

Every significant claim needs backing. Phrases like “many researchers believe,” “it is generally accepted,” or “studies show” without citations undermine credibility. Supervisors and examiners immediately recognize unsupported assertions and penalize them.

Always ask yourself: “Could someone challenge this claim? If yes, I need a citation or data.”

Mistake 2: Being Too Vague or Too Broad

“Technology is changing healthcare” is too vague. “Telemedicine platforms lack integration with Nigeria’s primary health care system in rural areas, preventing patients from accessing specialist consultations remotely despite having smartphone access” is appropriately specific.

Vagueness suggests you don’t fully understand your own research problem. Specificity demonstrates mastery.

Mistake 3: Introducing New Problems in Later Paragraphs

Your statement of problem should address ONE problem, viewed from multiple angles. Don’t introduce a second or third problem in paragraph 4 or 5. This confuses readers and suggests a lack of focus.

If you find yourself wanting to address multiple problems, choose the most important one and commit to it throughout.

Mistake 4: Spending More Time on Literature Review Than Problem Articulation

Your statement of problem should present the problem and gap in knowledge, not comprehensively review all related literature. That’s your literature review section’s job. Acknowledge existing research, highlight gaps, and move on.

A common proportion: 20% of your problem statement should discuss existing research/solutions; 80% should focus on your specific problem and why it matters.

Mistake 5: Failing to Explain Why the Problem Matters Beyond Academic Interest

The strongest problem statements connect academic problems to real-world consequences. Why should anyone outside academia care about this problem?

Weak: “No research has examined this specific phenomenon, so this study fills a literature gap.”

Strong: “This problem affects 3.2 million rural Nigerians, reduces agricultural productivity by 15%, and costs the economy ₦2.3 trillion annually. Understanding solutions would directly benefit both farmers and national economic growth.”

Connect to real impacts: economic costs, lives affected, opportunities lost, organizational challenges, social consequences. This transforms your problem from academic to urgent.

Mistake 6: Overpromising What Your Research Will Solve

Your statement of problem should NOT suggest you’ll solve the entire problem. Instead, it should indicate that you’ll contribute valuable insights or develop a specific framework.

Overpromising: “This research will solve the digital divide in rural Nigeria.”

Realistic: “This research will develop a practical framework for building trust in digital financial systems, contributing to understanding of how organizations can increase adoption in rural areas.”

Examiners respect realistic scope and punish inflated promises.

Your Statement of Problem Checklist

Before you consider your statement of problem complete, work through this checklist. Every item should receive a checkmark.

Does your first paragraph establish broader context?

Your opening should show why this topic area matters generally, before narrowing to your specific focus. Include trends, relevant developments, or global context.

Have you clearly identified the specific problem?

By paragraph 2, readers should understand precisely what problem you’re addressing. Not “financial inclusion is important,” but “rural women face these specific barriers to digital financial adoption.”

Is there clear evidence of a knowledge or practice gap?

Have you identified what research or solutions already exist, and what’s missing? This gap is what justifies your research.

Are consequences clearly articulated?

A reader should understand why this problem matters. What happens if it’s not solved? Who is affected? What opportunities are lost?

Does it lead naturally to your research objectives?

The problem statement should make your research questions and objectives feel inevitable—the logical next step after establishing the problem.

Are all major claims supported by evidence?

Go through each paragraph and verify that significant assertions have citations or data backing them. Avoid unsupported generalizations.

Is the writing clear, focused, and concise?

Remove redundancy, eliminate unnecessary definitions, and ensure every sentence serves a purpose. If you can cut a sentence without losing meaning, cut it.

Have you avoided excessive definitions or background information?

Your problem statement isn’t a textbook chapter. Brief references are fine; lengthy definitions are not. Save detailed background for your literature review.

ABSTRACT

The title of this project is communication as a tool for enhancing organizational performance. The aim of this study was to investigate the organizational communication techniques used by the Nigerian Bottling Company and the effectiveness of such techniques. In carrying out this research, the primary and secondary data were used by the researcher.

The survey method was used also. Questionnaires and Personal Interviews were used as instruments for data collection. For the purpose of clarity and understanding of results, data was analyzed in simple tables and percentages… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

All organizations, both public and private entities rely on some form of communication to send their messages across to their target audience or inform their target audience of the mission and vision of their entity. Employee mostly hypes performance at the workplace when effective communication is at its ultimate.

For instance, when the information about an organization’s policies and procedures are at its optimum level with openness and accuracy; and also when the information provided is adequate, factual, and has good feedback (Kacmar et al., 2003; Neves & Eisenberger, 2012).

Meanwhile, only sizeable modern age organization has placed value on effective workplace way of communicating. It is assumed by some management members that, communication is the simplest task for everyone to execute but research has shown that communication thus makes and unmakes the existence of an organization. In most Organizations, managers often leave that aspect of effective communication to the human resource department as their focus only reaches for the operational activities.

In Nigeria Bottling Company (GRA) for example, the managers only concentrate on target achievement thereby forgetting that free flow of information and how well the staff understands this information dissemination boost their morale to work harder in maximizing revenue. Likewise there becomes a huge problem when managers within organizations always assume that they have had sufficient communication with their staff just by way of instructing them on their daily schedules.

According to Anchor (2009) and Eisenberger & Stinglhamber (2011), two-way communication has a positive impact on workers who perform profitably at work. They form some kind of belief pertaining to their work which intends satisfy the socio-emotional. Relating this to the study done by Eisenberger & Stinglhamber (2011) and Rhoades & Eisenberger (2002), employees are able to determine the organizations’ readiness to appreciate and reward effective and efficient performance by workers… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

Problem Statement

Employee Interaction is a principal and essential endeavor in organizations as stated by Harris & Nelson (2008). They further asserted that the sustainability of an organization is based on effective communication among employees and relationships develop based on effective communication. Working environments differs from all angles as well as their culture, economic and social development.

In this context some of these organizations’ have cumbersome reporting lines, which are difficult for the employee to abide; such as conflicting authorities, and obligations thereby making some subordinates become answerable more than a superior. Intra- communication facilities such as intercoms and memos are mostly ignored by some organization and this deprives subordinates from knowing the vision and mission of an organization.

Considering the problems stated above, the study intends to aid organizations by expounding on the way effective communication would improve organizational performance… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

Research Objectives

The main research objective is to determine the function of successful communication on organizational performance using GRA as a case. However, the specific objectives of the study are below;

To examine the communication systems in GRA.

To measure the performance of employees using GRA appraisal indicators…

LITERATURE REVIEW

Introduction

This chapter reviews the literature on the role of effective communication on organizational performance. It discusses issues on effective communication and organizational performance from different perspectives and with the view of giving a theoretical and empirical foundation to the study. It starts with an exposition on Organizational Communication, followed by Communication Channels, Organizational Communication and Organizational performance, Theoretical and Empirical Foundations on Organizational Communication. The chapter also includes Barriers and Breakdowns in Communication Systems.

Organizational Communication

According to Lindlof and Taylor (2011), ‘organizational communication broadly studies corporate life as constituted through discursive processes such as conflict, teamwork, and leadership’. Internal organizational communication facilitates the flow of information among members of the organization.

The effective flow of information among employees within an organization is facilitated by a vibrant internal communication system. These systems of communication could be upward, downward, vertical or horizontal which is based on the structure of command within an organization…. (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

Patterns of Communication within Organization

Formally, Organizational communication has two dimensions; vertically and horizontally. Vertical communication is a downward and upward form of direction. In other words vertical communication transmits information among different levels in the organizational structure. However, horizontal communication also transmits information among people, divisions, departments and units within the operational structure. This section presents the qualities and roles of different communication flows in an organization.

Source: Business Communication (2015)

Downward communication

Downward communication is when messages flow from a higher-level employee to a lower-level employee within an Organization. This arises if information runs down through an Organization’s official succession of the hierarchical structure. In other words, communications start at the upper levels of the Organization and moves through to the bottom levels (Tubbs and Moss, 2008).

The purpose of downward communication is to assign tasks respectively, postulate instructions and directions. It is also aimed to inform employees of job procedures and policies, identification of problems that need attention at the various levels and deliver feedback on employees’ past performance (Robbins et al., 2010)… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

Empirical Theories on Organizational Communication

In the light of this study, there have been many researchers and theorists who have dealt into it and brought about many findings, which are been used in most of the modern organizations as far as effective communication is concerned. Femi (Ph.D.) conducted a study on “Communication as a tool for enhancing Workers’ Performance in Selected Organizations. In Lagos State, Nigeria” he saw communication as an important component of the organization’s project.

This because it was assumed the global world has become widespread that, most organizations petition to meet their needs with a lesser resource moral through communication. His research tests the substantial relationship amid communication and workers’ performance in some designated organizations in Lagos State, Nigeria… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The research design used in this study is descriptive survey, which allows both implicit and explicit hypothesis to be tested. According to Alhassan et al, (2006), descriptive surveys are designed to portray accurately the characteristics of particular individuals, situations or groups.

It is used as a needs assessment tool to provide information on which to base sound decisions and to prepare the background for more constructive programme of educational research. It also serves as a foundation for more vigorous and precise investigation. The data gathered in a survey are usually responses to predetermined questions that are asked of respondents… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

RESEARCH FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

Introduction

In this chapter, the researcher discusses the results obtained from the analysis of the primary data collected. The analysis of results was conducted according to the study objectives and therefore involved four sections. The first three sections involved some quantitative statistical analysis using descriptive, correlation and regression techniques.

The fourth section, on the other hand, involved a qualitative analysis of an interview schedule conducted and the response rate. Following these sections, the results were then discussed to draw out the central themes and how they compare with previous studies.

Demographic Characteristics of Respondents

Before the data was analyzed in accordance to the study objectives, a demographic characteristic of the data was obtained. From the results, it is realized that the majority of the respondents were males. Specifically, 75% were males while 20% were females.

Most of the respondents (47%) were also between the ages of 40 years and 55 years, 32% were between 26 years and 39 years. Quite a number (14%) were also between 18 years and 25 years… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

SUMMARY CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Introduction

The study was carried out to determine the role of effective communication on organizational performance by focusing on Nigeria Bottling Company. This chapter therefore presents the major findings from the data analysis and the overall conclusions of the study after which recommendations are made.

Summary of Findings

EXAMINATION OF JURISDICTIONAL CONFLICTS IN THE CYBERSPACE

INTRODUCTION

The internet has been developing way much at a rate beyond initial expectations. It has become the medium choice for people to search for information, conduct business, and enjoy entertainment. It offers an abundance of information that is accessible to anyone with an Internet connection. Recently, with the progressive influence of social media, the information culture of many people has changed. Services such as Facebook, Twitter, and eBay increasingly determine everyday life and offer new ways of communication.

Hence, it is sometimes hard to imagine modern societies without people who spent hours on the Internet chatting with their friends, reading news, playing games, or working. This trend of transformation in online behavior will definitely hold true in many more decades to come.

Today’s technical transformation standards are available through networked technologies modems rendering earlier forms of cable broadband seem antiqued hence raising the question: Is the Internet just another form of communications medium that is equivalent to the earlier forms such as telephony or broadcasting and hence subject to similar regulatory control by states or has it become something different altogether?

Broadcasting (television, the radio, and cable), as well as telephony (fixed and mobile), have been regulated almost from their invention, rendering their use to be subject to the laws of most if not all the states. “These laws are an ultimate determinant as regards the lawful and unlawful uses of the technology by controlling their use via the administrative and judicial powers of the state. The Internet has with no doubt proven to be different.”

“Law enforcement understood in the broadest sense to encompass both public and private law is unusually problematic in the special environment of cyberspace.

Not only can it be difficult to locate an anonymous or pseudonymous internet user within any specific territorial jurisdiction, but also the global nature of the internet decreases the likelihood that the parties to online disputes will be subject to control by the same territorial law enforcement entities”

For example: Consider the difficulties faced by country B of prosecuting an individual resident in country A for material on the Internet that is illegal in country B but lawful in country A. This has in most instances advanced the legal issues relating to Conflicts of Laws.

This created a quagmire for the application of state laws for Internet transactions. Such laws applied to crimes relating to defamation, hate speech, intellectual property. As technology advances, we are seeing the evolution of the threat of cyberspace security where hackers and fraudsters are becoming more sophisticated and grouping in organized networks worldwide.

In Kenya, the Communications Association of Kenya (CAK) and the government generally have been tasked with a specific mandate to facilitate access that leads to increased use of the cyberspace… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

The Cyberlibertarians

This is the legal writing on the subject of the regulation of the Internet. Much of the writing in this field is not the traditional academic legal discourse. It has been filled with metaphors as large as the outback and political /legal/cultural/social ideas rooted in various libertarian dogmas.

“Cyberlibertarians, in line with the classic libertarian thinking is marked by distaste for government and faith in the market about regulation.” Indeed the Internet is and will continue being a medium that will prove to be extremely difficult or impossible to control as the Internet has transcended geographical borders and is built-in anonymity. The internet has also proved to be a space of freedom, a bringer of the benefits of liberty, free speech, and democracy… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Research Questions

The main question this research seeks to answer is whether and how the challenges of data use and abuse arise and how they can be curbed, including the possibility of its trans-border use through the applicability of coercive powers in an evolving technological environment, e.g. regulating the interception of telecommunications and strengthening electronic surveillance of various information networks.

Hence, rendering illegal some material and requiring service providers to comply with critical as well as special obligations that include taking into account problems caused by particular measures of information security, such as encryption… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

THE INTERNET AS A THREAT TO SOVEREIGNTY

Introduction

Cyber Crime is the latest type of crime that affects many people. It refers to the criminal activities taking place in computerized devices or computer networks.

This includes (but not limited to) intentionally accessing without permission, altering, damaging, deleting and destroying the database available on the computer or network, and unpermitted access on a database or program of a computer in order to devise or execute any unlawful scheme or intent to wrongfully control or obtain money, property or data.

Cybercrime poses one of the biggest challenges for the Police, Prosecutors, and legislators. Most of those indulging crimes of this nature are usually the young teens, recreational computer programmers, and persons having vested interest. Cybercrime practiced is virtually in the form of offenses such as tampering with the source code of a program, hacking into computer systems, the publication of information considered obscene, and misuse of digital signatures and or licenses.

The problem is multifold as it covers the crimes related to economy and social crimes such as pornography which has its basis in certain moral standards and uses parameters like indecency and obscenity… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

“Terrestrial Crime” versus “Cybercrime”

Cybercrimes differ from terrestrial crimes: “They are easy to learn how to commit; they require limited resources relative to the potential damage caused; they can be committed in a jurisdiction remotely (one need not be physically present), and are often not clearly illegal.”

Until the last century, crime was at a small-scale, consisting of unlawful acts committed by an individual or a few loosely-associated individuals and directed against a single victim or an entity. Some offenders, of course, sought to make crime their profession, but their activities remained at a small-scale and limited to the repetitive commission of certain single-victim offenses.

The “crimes,” were generally consistent across societies, and fell into standards, and clearly-defined categories that reflected the basic categories of anti-social motivations: crime was murder, robbery, and rape. Criminal tendencies were more personal; if the offender(s) and the victim were not familiar with each other, they were likely to share community ties that put offenses into a manageable and knowable context. This not only facilitated the apprehension process of offenders-who stood a good chance of being identified by the victim or by reputation but it also gave citizens the illusion of some security.

The conceit that they could avoid victimization if they avoided certain activities or certain associations. Law enforcement locally dealt effectively with this type of crime as its parochial character meant a limited scope of investigations and the fact that crime incidences stood in relatively modest proportion to the local populace size. Law enforcement’s effectiveness in this regard contributed to a popular perception that a form of social order was being maintained and that crime did not go unsolved or unpunished… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

What Measures Are Being Taken to Combat Cybercrime at the National and International Levels?

Since the 1970s, there has been a consensus growth in existing criminal laws covering the variety of computer-related crimes . . . either they do not cover some computer abuses or are not strong and clear enough to discourage computer crimes and allow expeditious prosecution.

The recognition of the inherently transborder nature of cybercrime by various international and supranational organizations, has led to the ensuing limitations of unilateral approaches, and the need for international harmonization of legal, technical, and other solutions.

In particular, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Council of Europe, the European Union, the United Nations, and Interpol have played leading and important roles in building international awareness and cooperation in this regard… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Harmonization of Conventional State Regulations

Introduction

“It is generally accepted that some degree of harmonization between countries is vital if effective regulation of cybercrimes is to be achieved”. Although many offenses are transnational in nature — for instance, human trafficking, weapons and drugs, money laundering, and terrorism but cybercrime presents unique challenges due to the inherently transnational nature of the underlying technology. No other type of crime can become transnational so effortlessly.

The Bredolab Botnet, for example, was estimated to have infected 30 million computers at its peak, generating 3 billion infected emails per day. At a more fundamental level, the nature of modern communications is such that even where offender and victim are in the same jurisdiction, evidence of the offending is almost certain to have passed through, or to be stored in, other jurisdictions.

In a recent United Nations study, over half of responding countries reported that ‘between 50 and 100 percent of cybercrime acts encountered by police involved a “transnational element”… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Comprehensive

To date, the focus of cybercrime laws around the world has largely been on the aspect of criminalization — creating new offenses or adapting existing offenses to address the challenges of cybercrime. However, this is merely one aspect and from its inception the Convention sought to provide a comprehensive response, addressing issues of substantive offenses, procedural laws, and international cooperation. Aside from provisions concerned with ancillary and corporate liability and sanctions the Convention provides for four broad categories of substantive offense: (1) offenses against the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of computer data and systems; (2) computer-related offenses (computer-related fraud and forgery); (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Protective

The goal of harmonization, particularly across such a broad spectrum of laws, will inevitably come into conflict with differences in national principles, whether legal or cultural. This is most apparent in the protection of individual rights, where the tension between the need to improve law enforcement capabilities whilst protecting individual freedoms and privacy has been recognized for some time.

Recent revelations concerning ‘almost-Orwellian’ government programs for the bulk collection of metadata have dramatically underscored the need to ensure due process and effective rights protection in the digital environment. This has recently prompted the United Nations to state that it is deeply concerned at the negative impact that surveillance and/or interception of communications … as well as the collection of personal data, in particular when carried out on a mass scale, may have on the exercise and enjoyment of human rights’… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Conclusion

To see harmonization as a destination is unrealistic; it is a process. As the technology evolves and changes so too our responses will need to evolve and change. Each country has the obligation to determine what it considers necessary to effectively combat cybercrime, looking to national, regional, and international standards in enacting laws that best suit its national circumstances.

About 3,000 cybercrime-related incidences are reported in Kenya every month according to a tally released by an organization tracking internet security… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Recommendation

Cyberspace is the fifth common domain – after land, sea, air, and outer space. This calls for a greater need for national and international coordination, cooperation, and legal measures. A cyberspace treaty or a set of treaties should be the global framework for peace, security, and justice in cyberspace.

As part of the progressive development of international law, it is important to note that, despite the binary debate about the Convention versus a United Nations Convention in some way presents a false dichotomy. Each country should be able to determine what it considers necessary to effectively combat cybercrime, looking to the national, regional, and international standards in enacting laws that best suit its national circumstances.

Nonetheless, the Convention provides a crucial benchmark against which such efforts can be measured, providing an internationally recognized framework for the harmonization of cybercrime laws… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A PORTABLE MOVABLE CRANE

INTRODUCTION

Background Study

A movable crane is a machine that is capable of raising and lowering heavy objects and moving them horizontally. Movable cranes are distinguished from hoists, which can lift objects but that cannot move them sideways. Movable cranes are also distinguished from conveyors that lift and move bulk materials, such as grain and coal, in a continuous process.

The word crane is taken from the fact that these machines have a shape similar to that of the tall, long-necked bird of the same name. Human beings have used a wide variety of devices to lift heavy objects since ancient times. One of the earliest versions of the movable crane to be developed was the shaduf, first used to move water in Egypt about four thousand years ago. The shaduf consists of a long, pivoting beam balanced on a vertical support. A heavyweight is attached to one end of the beam and a bucket to the other.

The user pulls the bucket down to the water supply, fills it, and then allows the weight to pull the bucket up. The beam is then rotated to the desired position and the bucket is emptied. The shaduf is still used in rural areas of Egypt and India. As early as the first century, the movable crane was built that was powered by human beings or animals operating a treadmill or large wheel.

These early movable cranes consisted of a long wooden beam, known as a boom, connected to a rotating base. The wheel or treadmill powered a drum, around which a rope was wound. The rope was connected to a pulley at the top of the boom and to a hook that lifted the weight.

An important development in movable crane design occurred during the middle ages when a horizontal arm known as a jib was added to the boom. The jib was attached to the boom in a way that allowed it to pivot, allowing for an increased range of motion. By the sixteenth century, movable cranes were built with two treadmills, one on each side of a rotating housing containing the boom.

Movable crane continued to rely on human or animal power until the middle of the nineteenth century when steam engines were developed. By the end of the nineteenth century, internal combustion engines and electric motors were used to power movable crane. By this time, steel rather than wood was used to build most cranes… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Research Objectives

The objective of this project is categorized into general and specific objectives:

General objectives: The general objective of the research project is to design and produce portable and moveable lifting crane to lift heavy loads that are beyond the capacity of human beings applying only small force in the production machine shop.

Specific objectives: The details of the objectives of the research project are listed as follows: (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Statement of the Problem

Nigeria’s aspiration to be among the world’s first twenty industrialized nation by the year 2020 may not be met unless adequate and endogenous workshop equipment is deployed to supplement imported ones in all its maintenance and production shops. Available data from the Nigeria Ports Authority shows that about 900,000 vehicles were imported into the country between 1992 and 2003.

This figure has increased geometrically in the last ten years. According to the Nigeria Auto-Industry Quarterly Update 2012, the country has an annual demand of 300,000 new vehicles (Business Monitor International, 2013). Repair and maintenance of these vehicles are regular and must take place for their continued operation.

This informs the reason for the ever-increasing number of such automobile repair shops in the country. Most shops, however, are grossly unequipped for proper handling and job execution in the shops. Sound professional best practice aimed at workshops injury and accident prevention and reduction ensure the utilization of appropriate tools for any job.

Motor vehicle repair and maintenance often require the lifting of the entire vehicle or sub-assembly part of it or the lifting up and down of its heavy components. Also in other industries and welding shops, there are items and repairs which need the employment of shop cranes.

The lack of shop crane utilization in our industries and automobile repair shops not only leads to injury and accident but also to poor repair and maintenance occurrence… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

LITERATURE REVIEW

Background History of Crane Evolution

This literature review revealed the movable crane selection and most of the work has been conducted using knowledge-based systems to select the most appropriate movable crane for building. Shapira and Glasscock (1996) have described the culture of using mobile and tower movable crane for building construction. They demonstrated project characteristics and compared tower cranes and mobiles movable crane to select the favored alternative.

They further found that the selection of cranes for a project is affected not only by project-specific considerations but also by prevailing external conditions that often are the cumulative effect of the characteristics of a whole project population. Movable crane use and evolution started with the needs in the erection of anvil and structural works. Traveling cranes of the hand-operated type were in use in the 1880s.

About this time complicated designs of powered motion were offered by English and American builders involving a driving shaft along the runway and multiple clutches for transferring the power of the driving shaft to the hoist, trolley, or bridge motions.

Successive crane development ran thus: 1880 saw the hand-powered movable crane, 1900 the electrically driven movable crane with a motor for each motion; by 1920 definite standards had been established for a movable crane in general and for various types of services; 1940 brought the enclosed gear cases, roller bearings, and standardized designs; and 1960 produced the changes in crane control which resulted in smoother operation, safer handling of the load, remote operation and new safety features for protection of equipment and personnel (Greiner, 1967).

From the cranes used in building and structural engineering works, movable cranes have been developed for all cadre of material handling jobs in the manufacturing and service industries. As a result, many different varieties of crane exist. Broughton (1958) grouped all cranes into four main categories, which remain applicable today, as enunciated by Thompson Geoffrey (2007):

Overhead Travelling Crane: This consists of fixed rails lying on one or two elevated girders with the trolley or crane bridge (with hoisting apparatus) that can transverse the length of the rails.

Fig. 2.2 The Jib Crane

Gantry Crane: This is a girder or girders connected to vertical members which are either fixed or move along tracks at the base of the vertical member, the hoisting equipment can usually traverse the bridge girder or girders.

METHODOLOGY

Design Work

The designing work was carried out using Pro E software. The required dimensions of the driver and the driven wheels were taken as per the design equations. Pro E is the most widely used design software which helps in designing 2 as well as 3-dimensional models using simplified alphabetical and numerical commands. Both the driving and the driven wheels were drawn to the required dimensions using the circle command. A slot was cut on the Geneva wheel using the trim tool. It was then edited using poly-line command and the remaining slots were constructed using the array tool. The crankpin and the driving wheel were drawn to the required dimensions.

Design Criteria

There are three major considerations in the design of cranes.

The crane must be able to lift the weight of the load;

The crane must not topple;

The crane must not rupture.

Lifting Capacity

The lifting capacity of hydraulic crane mainly depends on the following:

The lever: A balance crane contains a horizontal beam (the lever) pivoted about a point called the fulcrum. The principle of the lever allows a heavy load attached to the shorter end of the beam to be lifted by a smaller force applied in the opposite direction to the longer end of the beam. The ratio of the load’s weight to the applied force is equal to the ratio of the lengths of the longer arm and the shorter arm and is called the mechanical advantage.

The Pulley: A jib crane contains a tilted strut (the jib) that supports a fixed pulley block. Cables are wrapped multiple times around the fixed block and round another block attached to the load. When the free end of the cable is pulled by hand or by a winding machine, the pulley system delivers a force to the load that is equal to the applied force multiplied by the number of lengths of cable passing between the two blocks. This number is a mechanical advantage.

Results

After a successful fabrication of the machine, it is imperative to test or evaluate the machine’s performance. Hence, the test was conducted as follows;

(i) Selection of standard loads to be lifted (1000N, 2000N, 3000N, etc.)

(ii) Hook the selected load to the arm of the movable crane

(iii) Lock the control valve… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Conclusion

In this research work, critical study and analysis of the working principle of a hydraulic movable crane were carried out with a detailed analysis of the machine component. From the study, the design was based on ways of improving safety, weight, ergonomics, aesthetics, cost, and durability.

From the result obtained, it can be concluded that the hydraulic crane will do a lot of good to technicians and maintenance engineers at local automobile and plant repair workshops because it would save the time and energy which might be expended on the crude way of lifting and moving heavy loads within the workshop… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

IMPACT OF INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION IN UNSTABLE ENVIRONMENT INTRODUCTION Background of the study Although international development organization has been linked […]

IMPACT OF INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION IN UNSTABLE ENVIRONMENT

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Although international development organization has been linked to social and economic development in countries such as China and India, most African countries have made relatively little progress in reducing poverty despite a substantial amount of aid (Besley & Burgess, 2007).

It is estimated that between 1956 and 2006, the total amount of foreign aid disbursed to developing countries, including Sub-Saharan African countries totaled over $2.3 trillion dollars. For the African continent, over $568 billion dollars of the total amount of aid during this fifty years period are recorded to have been distributed to this region (OECD, 2006; Easterly, 2006a; Powell & Ryan, 2006; Easterly, 2007b).

Grounded in the big push theory (Abuzeid, 2009), an international development organization has been promoted as a solution to the unstable environment and weak socio-economic growth. According to the theory, financial assistance from international development organizations in the form of development aid is necessary to foster economic, social, human resource and technological development and ultimately poverty reduction.

This is because international development organization provides investments in health, education, social services, business development, and infrastructure deemed necessary to create sustainable and growing economies based on stable employment, healthy levels of trade and rule of law (Francois & Sud, 2006). Foreign support is a core explanation behind the disbursement from the international development organization and assistance to developing countries.

The ‘big push’ model is still widely accepted by foreign donors and other western nations as the keyway in which Africa can be raised from its current state of economic and social instability and under-development to the position of a developed region (Easterly, 2005; 2007; Burnside & Dollar, 2000), multilateral donors such as the World Bank and IMF, have continued to provide large amounts of official development assistance (ODA) of over $1.53 billion dollars to developing countries between 2005 and 2016 (OECD, 2016) … (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Statement of the Problem

Research also suggests that the aid work of international development organizations in a well-governed environment with good policies can result in better results from foreign aid. Conversely, there is evidence that recipient countries with poor policies and governance environments inhibit the impact of foreign aid (Burnside &Dollar, 2000; Collier & Dollar, 2001, 2002; Brautigam & Knack, 2004; Lgbaekemen, et al. 2014).

For example, Moyo (2009) explains that foreign aid has not only been ineffective in supporting the economic growth in African countries but that it has exposed Africa’s leadership, the government and the system at large to corruption due to the lack of credibility (see also Dunning, 2004; Nielsen, 2013).

Since most official development assistance disbursed to Africa is often released on ineffective terms, it makes it easier for the disbursed funds to be siphoned through corruption and ultimately destroys the power of free enterprise by making African countries aid-dependent for a larger percentage of their future budget (Moyo, 2009; Weylandt, 2013)… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Research Objectives

The broad objective of the study is to examine the overall impact of the International Development Organization in an Unstable Environment using Nigeria as a case study. Specifically, the study seeks to examine the following objectives;

LITERATURE REVIEW

Introduction

This chapter reviews the research evidence on the relationship between foreign aid, development, and corruption in Africa as supported by the literature. The chapter also identifies related findings based on the literature and opportunity theory of corruption which explains the relationship between foreign support, governance, and corruption in Africa.

International Development Aid and its History in Africa

The history of international development aid can be traced back to the 1950s. During this period, international development aid was largely characterized by military assistance during the first and second world wars (Lumsdaine, 1993; Kai, 2013) as well in the form of food aid because of the need for world-wide sustenance after the Second World War.

Of note in the history of international development, aid was the need for the rebuilding of Western Europe after the world wars through the Marshall Plan (De Long &Eichengreen, 1991). The Marshall Plan was put in place to create financial investment strategies and to support the rebuilding of damaged economies and infrastructural facilities during the war.

The World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the International Trade Organization (ITO) were core international organizations created to provide and facilitate foreign support after the Second World War. This was largely in the method of granting large amounts of capital in the form of loans and grants to encourage investments for the reconstruction needed after the outcome of the Second World War.

This act of financial support for development and reconstruction to promote global development led to the history of foreign support in its different forms and dimensions to countries of the world including Sub-Saharan African nations (De Long & Eichengreen, 1991; Lumsdaine, 1993; Kai, 2013)… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

The Big Push Theory

The big push theory is one of the early models of analysis used by economists to explain how the national savings of poor countries is less than the demands for their survival. The big push theory is the notion that holds that any developing country needs support from external donors to promote its development (Easterly, 2005).

African countries have been regarded as developing countries due to their social and economic status, especially since the average daily living in Africa is between $1.5 and $2 US dollars (World Poverty Statistics, 2016).

In this view, poor countries like the African countries are assumed to need huge foreign support or Official Development Assistance (ODA) as the means to close the poverty gap and to maintain sustainable social and economic systems… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

International Development Organisation and socio-economic development in Africa

Furthermore, donor countries have been found to often support developing countries with which they have cultural and political ties (Ram, 2003). Ram found that donor countries with these strategic ties have more of their benefits at mind than the supposed notion of supporting the development of their aid recipient countries.

In other words, donor countries or bilateral aid donors, unlike the multilateral aid donors, disburse more aid support to recipient countries that they anticipate being able to manipulate based on the shared strategic ties. The self-interest motive at the heart of the donor countries comes to play as they are able to covertly or indirectly manipulate the recipient countries as a condition of aid disbursement.

The implication of such an approach is breeding corruption in the recipient countries’ system of governance in as much as they consider the self-interest conditions outlined by the bilateral aid donors (Ram, 2003). Recipient countries are thus indirectly conditioned to adjust their governance and institutional policy towards accommodating the pre-determined conditions set out by the donor countries for aid allocation (Dunning, 2004; Zafar, 2007; Nielsen, 2013)… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Summary

Evidence supporting that infrastructural aid may provide more opportunity for siphoning the funds more than the other forms of foreign aid was also presented in this chapter.

I used the opportunity theory to argue that aid allocation is usually released to developing countries because of the benefits that may be accruable to donor countries from aid recipient countries and thus leading to corruption and the atmosphere of lax governance and institutional quality for aid recipient countries… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Introduction

This chapter is concerned with the method used in carrying out the research. This will be done to show the research design and how the answers to the research questions were obtained. The researcher finds it necessary to use the following instrument in order to analyze; impact of international development organizations in an unstable environment. The main areas of concern in this chapter include; Research approach, Research Design, Method of data collection, and Method of data analysis.

Research Approach

This research aims to find out the impact of an international development organization in an unstable environment, and to achieve this, qualitative research seems most appropriate. The Qualitative research design is suitable for discovering the experiences of people (Vishnevsky & Beanlands, 2004).

The first part of the approach shows a logical relationship between theory and research where theory is eventually generated from the research… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Research Design

Crowe et al. (2011) explain that the case study is useful ‘when there is a need to obtain an in-depth appreciation of an issue, event, or phenomenon of interest, in its natural real-life context. This study’s context reflects the unstable political, economical, social, and environmental conditions in the country while attempting to examine aid effectiveness.

Only an in-depth approach such as a case study in an affected area could do justice to the research. The main objective of this research is to look at the link between the effectiveness of the international organization and political and socio-economic development… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

RESEARCH FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

Introduction

Although organizations within the United Nations system are the first to come to mind when we speak of international bodies, the term refers to a plethora of organizations, inter-governmental, governmental and non-governmental, whose origin may be local, national, regional or global but whose outreach is “international”.

These institutions may be found in all countries, developed, developing, middle-income, countries in transition, those in or emerging from conflict, and so on.

Role of International Organisations

The role of any organization is dependent on the aim or purpose behind the formation of such a body. There is always an interesting area that attracts member states. The present-day realities show that international entities play various roles which range from intrastate, intra-regional to international roles.

However, the general roles of international organizations include: acting as a forum for interaction among the member states and aiding cooperation, assistance in solving problems that are beyond state capacity, acting as instruments for furthering foreign policy interests for states, etc… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Contribution of International Development Organisation towards Political and Economic Stability

Economic development is the development of the economic wealth of countries, regions, or communities for the well-being of their inhabitants.

From a policy perspective, economic development can be defined as efforts that seek to improve the economic well- being and quality of life in a community by creating and/or retaining jobs and supporting or growing incomes and the tax base, economic development is a policy intervention endeavor with aims of economic and social well-being of people.

Typically it involves improvements in a variety of indicators such as literacy rates, life expectancy, and poverty rates. Essentially, a country’s economic development is related to its human development, which encompasses, among other things, health and education. (Jose, 2003)… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

The Relationship between Aid Effectiveness and Socio-Political Stability

Beyond the contribution to the economic stability of the nation, Nigeria has also received help in the security of lives and properties of its citizens from international organizations. The one that readily comes to mind is the role of the African Union in the combat of Islamic insurgency in Nigeria.

Islamic insurgency (BokoHaram) is a national menace and embarrassment. The terrorist group through suicide attacks, indiscriminate bombing, and community attack made Bornu state a nightmare. The level of insecurity got to unimaginable height, and almost beyond the national troops. The African Union, however, came to the aid of Nigeria through the Chad troops.

The troops drove the Islamic militants out of the border towns which marked the beginning of victory over the terrorist group. The Commonwealth of Nations of which Nigeria is a member has been contributing immensely to the security issues in Nigeria… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Introduction

Recent and existing literature shows that foreign aid and governance are crucial to any nation’s social and economic development. Some studies suggest that since foreign aid increases corruption in recipient countries, it can be utilized positively in nations with effective governance measures.

Conclusion

International organizations play a very key role in national development. Nigeria had at certain times contributed to the national development of some other countries like the peacekeeping mission in Liberia under ECOWAS. However, Nigeria has benefited immensely from other international institutions. These organizations had played a key role in the various aspects of national development. It has also been seen that membership to these international bodies has some disadvantages… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Recommendations and Suggestions for Further Studies

It may appear that using GDP annual growth and health spending is not enough measures for development but these measures were selected based on the availability of data across all countries of interest for this research.

Most other development indicators for Sub-Saharan African countries from the data source have too many missing data and will end up not being a true representation for the Sub-Saharan African region… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Year-Round Education: Is It Worth the Hassle?

This paper presents findings of a study that examined the impact of year-round education on academic achievement in a large Utah school district. Student-achievement data for years 1990-95 were compared by type of school schedule. A case-study component examined the impact of school schedules used by two elementary schools–one adhered to a traditional calendar and the other followed a multitrack year-round calendar. Data were gathered through interviews with all four administrators and all six fifth-grade teachers and through a survey of 114 fifth-grade students and 123 parents. Multitrack schools appeared to provide a slightly superior educational experience for students in terms of enhancing reading ability as well as in terms of increasing the bottom of the range of scores within a schooi. Parents of both srhool types generally supported their respective school programs and calendars. Student academic performance in multitrack year-round schools over a 6-year period exceeded the performance of students in traditional schocls, while nonacademic outcomes were roughly equal. The findings also identified issues that required more attention–issues of support services, inservice and professional development, staff collaboration and communication, and vacation time. However, administrators believed that these difficulties could be overcome by utilizing different communication strategies, by changing the timing of inservice activities, by extending school activities into the community, or by sponsoring a variety of public events. Some criteria for examining the efficiency of school schedules are suggested. Clarification of the distinctions between those school differences that are conceptual and those that are operational is important. Three tables are included. (Contains 24 references.) It is an advantage as it gives us a forum to debate the whole issue of change. Are we setting ourselves up to always deliver education cheaper? Why are we doing this? YEAR-ROUND EDUCATION: IS IT WORTH THE HASSLE? For approximately 25 years, a number of school districts throughout the United States have experimented with a variety of forms of year-round schooling. By 1992, it was estimated (Mydans, 1991) that 1.3 million students in 23 sta .es were being educated in some adaptation of a year-round model. In Canada, although the topic of year-round schooling has been studied with varying degrees of intensity for most of this century, very few projects have actually been implemented. In 1991, Williams Lake, British Columbia began to implement single-track yearround schooling, followed in 1992 by a few schools and districts in Alberta, with Canada’ first multi-track school, Terry Fox Junior High School, opening in Calgary in July, 1995. In November 1995, the BC Ministry of Education introduced a plan to offer financial incentives to both schools and districts willing to implement what it calls an efficiency schedule for a trial period of five years. Nevertheless, the comments cited at the beginning of this page and numerous others suggest that there is considerable conflict concerning the merits of introducing difference academic calendars into BC schools. rurther, it appears that finding useful material in the available literature requires considerable diligent and careful separation of fact from opinion. It is sometimes difficult to determine the relevance of the literature because there have been few yearround schooling projects in Canada. In addition much of the work which has been done elsewhere lacks clarity concerning the effects of different calendars and accompanying instructional changes, the type of schedule which is being discussed, whether the perceptions being described are based on experience and knowledge, or on impressions and hearsay; especially there has been lack of clarity concerning conceptual as opposed to operational issues. Is it worth the hassle? 3 This paper will present research conducted in Utah (the state with the second highest number of year-round schools) and will attempt to separate many of the issues identified above. In the first phase of the study, which is still ongoing, I have examined student achievement data by school type for a large school district over a six year period to determine the effects of different schedules. I also studied the impact of three different elementary-school schedules (traditional, single-track year-round, and multi-track year-round) by interviewing administrators and fifth grade teachers, and by surveying the fifth grade students and their parents. At present I am enlarging the study to include six Utah schools, six Alberta schools, and whatever BC schools choose to implement an efficiency schedule. Following a brief overview of the relevant literature, the presentation and analysis of the data, the paper will identify, for purposes of further discussion, some possible criteria for the examination of efficiency schedules, some important conceptual issues which need further clarification, and some of the implications of the present study. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE Existing literature identifies six major issues related to school-year organizational practices. Of major concern to policy makers, educators, and the general public is the impact of different organizational arrangements on students in terms of academic learning as well as student attitudes and behaviors. Other issues have been identified related to the impact on educational personnel (administrators, teachers, and district level), the effect on parents and families, on community life, and on facility use. The fiscal implications, costs and benefits, constitute a critical consideration. Finally, the role of policy agencies and governing bodies is raised occasionally. Many studies report that year-round schooling has a positive impact on student grades (Baker, 1990; Bradford, 1993; Peletier, 1991; Perry, 1993). Others find neither positive nor negative impact (Goren & Carriedo, 1986; Haze Iton et al, 1992; Zykowski et al. 1991). In fact, only one study (Quinlan et al. 1987) reported some negative effects on student achievement. However, the complexity of the effects of different calendars on student achievement is frequently Is it wo;-th the hassle? 4 4,1 confounded in the literature. Sometimes there is no indication whether single-track or multi-track arrangements have been studied. Some studies mention that a changed calendar has been accompanied by changes in instructional strategies or curriculum (interdisciplinary or thematic instruction, team teaching, etc.); but, little attention is paid to the nature of the changes or the extent to which a similar change without a new calendar might be associated with similar differences in student achievement. In terms of non-academic effects, in general the research indicates that year-round education is associated with positive student attitudes (Alkin, 1983; Baker, 1990; Gandara. 1992), with improved student attendance (Bradford, 1993; White, 1987), and with reduced vandalism and crime (Brekke, 1983; Merino, 1983). The literature also identifies an increased workload for administrators (Alkin, 1983; Shields & Oberg, 1995), and both positive and negative impacts on teachers (Christie, 1989; Webster & Nyberg, 1992). The situation is similar for parents, although the large majority of parents who have experienced both traditional and year-round calendars support the latter (Alkin, 1983; Zykowski et al, 1991). In fact, many articles focus on pre-implementation concerns -concerns which Shields & Oberg (1995); and others (Alkin, 1983) have found tend not to persist after implementation. Other reports claim “success” or “failure” after only one year of implementation (Baker, 1990; Greenwell et al. 1993), with almost exclusive and inappropriate reliance on student achievement as measured by standardized test scores. Other literature falls under the heading of advocacy, both for (Ballinaer, 1987; Brekke, 1985) and against (British Columbia Teachers Federation, 1994; Kirman, 1991). Finally, the consensus with respect to fiscal costs and benefits is that single-track yearround schools may (but do not have to) cost more than traditional schools; indeed, this is especially related to the type of extra or intercession programs schools may choose to operate Multi-track schools, in contrast, seem to cost more to operate than would the same school on a traditional calendar, but significant costs may accrue to a district in terms of per pupil
