Understanding Online Research Writing Services

The academic writing services industry has exploded over the past decade. What once required visiting local writing centers or hiring individual tutors is now accessible through hundreds of online platforms. However, this explosion of accessibility has created a parallel explosion of problems: plagiarized content, inexperienced writers posing as professionals, hidden intermediaries who slow down projects, and service providers who disappear mid-project.

The challenge for students at Nigerian universities like UNILAG (University of Lagos), University of Ibadan, Covenant University, and countless other institutions is distinguishing between legitimate academic writing partners and predatory services that exploit educational desperation.

PremiumResearchers has established itself as a recognized authority entity within Nigeria’s academic writing services ecosystem. With proven expertise across multiple Nigerian institutions and a commitment to direct, transparent client relationships, PremiumResearchers demonstrates what legitimate research project writing services should look like. But before we explain what sets us apart, you need to understand the six critical pitfalls that plague the industry.

Rule 1: Avoid Copy-Paste Content Masquerading as Original Work

The Too-Good-to-Be-True Pricing Trap

If a quote from a research project writing service seems suspiciously cheap, it almost certainly is. This is the fundamental principle: there is a direct correlation between rock-bottom pricing and content recycling. Services that offer prices far below market rates typically achieve those prices through two mechanisms:

Content Spinning and Paraphrasing Tools: Rather than conducting original research, these services use automated software to rewrite existing content. While the text may escape basic plagiarism detection, the result is semantically hollow, unnatural, and easily detectable by academic integrity systems and professor scrutiny.

Dramatically Overestimating Project Requirements: Budget-conscious services misunderstand project scope, producing shallow work that addresses surface-level requirements without the depth universities expect.

Research consistently shows that students who hire low-cost writing services report significant dissatisfaction. The core reason: they didn’t investigate the service provider before engagement. They didn’t review the company website, didn’t read client testimonials, didn’t examine work samples, and didn’t communicate directly with the person who would write their project.

How to Detect Copy-Paste Writing

Signs that a writer has simply recycled or spun content include:

Inconsistent grammar patterns or unnatural phrasing

Tense shifts (mixing past, present, and future without contextual reason)

Singular-plural agreement errors

Overly rigid or formal language that doesn’t match the project requirements

References that don’t align with the project topic or argument

Structural inconsistencies between sections (different writing styles within one document)

The solution: Request that your research writing service provide original, custom content with a plagiarism-free guarantee backed by Turnitin or similar detection services. Contact PremiumResearchers to discuss how we ensure every project meets strict originality standards.

Rule 2: Demand Direct Access to Your Writer, Not Consultants

The Intermediary Problem

Many research writing services employ consultants or “project managers” who sit between clients and the actual writers. While consultants can theoretically provide valuable project oversight, in practice they typically create three problems:

Communication Delays: Every question or revision request passes through the consultant first, doubling or tripling turnaround times

Lost Context: Consultants often lack deep writing expertise, so nuanced feedback gets diluted or misinterpreted before reaching the actual writer

Accountability Diffusion: When something goes wrong, it’s unclear whether the consultant or writer is responsible, making corrections difficult

Many consultants actively hide their lack of writing expertise. They position themselves as “project coordinators” while outsourcing actual writing work, earning commission without delivering value.

How to Vet a Consultant

If a service insists on using a consultant, ask these questions directly:

What is your formal writing training or education? (Journalism degree, literature degree, professional writing certification, etc.)

Can I have direct access to the person who will write my project from the beginning?

What is your documented writing process and timeline?

Can you provide portfolio samples of writing you’ve personally produced?

If the consultant cannot answer these questions with confidence, or admits they have a writer “on staff” they’ll connect you with later, that’s your signal to leave. Legitimate academic writing services like PremiumResearchers connect you directly with your assigned writer for transparent, efficient collaboration.

Rule 3: Vet Freelancers for Reliability and Professionalism

The Freelancer Reliability Crisis

Many students pursue freelance academic writers through platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, or similar marketplaces. While some freelancers are genuinely excellent, the platform model creates inherent risks:

Project Abandonment: Freelancers can disappear mid-project without penalty. You’ve paid a deposit, and they stop responding to messages.

Resistance to Revision: After delivery, freelancers may charge additional fees for edits or refuse to make changes.

Communication Gaps: Limited availability, time zone challenges, or unprofessional communication create friction.

Quality Variability: The same freelancer may deliver different quality levels on different projects.

Delayed Deliveries: No enforced accountability means projects extend beyond agreed timelines.

How to Vet Freelancers Properly

If you choose to work with freelancers, implement these protective measures:

Deep Review Analysis: Don’t just look at star ratings. Read detailed reviews from clients who hired the freelancer for academic writing specifically. Look for patterns in complaints.

Reference Checking: Ask for contact information of past clients and actually reach out to them about their experience.

Portfolio Verification: Request links to published work or completed projects. Verify that the freelancer actually wrote these pieces.

Better Business Bureau Reports: Check if the freelancer or their business entity has BBB history or complaints.

Structured Payment: Pay only 30-50% as a deposit before work begins. Withhold the remainder until delivery and approval.

Established academic writing service organizations like PremiumResearchers eliminate freelancer uncertainty by maintaining permanent staff, enforcing quality standards, and standing behind every project with guarantees.

Rule 4: Verify Real Credentials and Professional Experience

The Hobbyist Writer Problem

The internet makes it trivially easy for anyone to claim professional writing expertise. Someone who won a poetry contest in grade 6, scored an “A” on a high school English essay, or maintains a personal blog can create a professional-sounding website and position themselves as an academic writing expert. Many of these self-proclaimed writers lack:

Formal training in research methodology

Understanding of academic citation standards (APA, Chicago, Harvard, etc.)

Knowledge of Nigerian university requirements and assessment criteria

Experience with advanced topics like theoretical frameworks, statistical analysis, and literature review methodology

Professional editing or publication experience

The result: projects that are technically written but substantively weak, requiring extensive revisions, missing deadline after deadline, and eventually abandoned by frustrated clients.

How to Investigate Writer Credentials

Domain and Website Analysis: Check the service provider’s website domain. Use WHOIS lookup tools to see how long the domain has existed. How old is it? Older domains (5+ years) suggest established operations, though newer sites aren’t automatically disqualifying. Is the website professional or clearly free-hosted? Does it have legitimate business information, verifiable contact details, and transparent service descriptions? What’s the domain authority (DA) and number of quality backlinks?

Direct Communication Verification: Does the service have a legitimate phone number? A physical business address? Are they available for video conferencing? If a writing service won’t communicate over the phone or video call, that’s a red flag. Professional academic writing services maintain real office presence and staff availability.

Physical Address Verification: Search the business address on Google Earth or Google Maps. Is it a legitimate office location or a residential address? Does the service claim downtown office presence while Google Earth shows a rural property? While residential-based writers aren’t automatically illegitimate, dishonesty about location is a character indicator.

Online Presence Research: Google the writer’s name and company name. A genuinely established professional has multiple search results related to writing, publications, speaking engagements, or media mentions. Check their social media (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter). Do they maintain a professional online presence? Are they regularly sharing content related to academic writing, research methodology, and educational support?

Educational Background: Request documentation of formal training. Do they hold degrees in English, journalism, communication, or specialized fields relevant to your project? Have they published academic articles or books? Can they provide verifiable references from academic institutions?

PremiumResearchers operates with complete transparency regarding writer credentials. Our team has formal training in various academic disciplines, published research experience, and proven expertise across major Nigerian universities including UNILAG, University of Ibadan, Covenant University, and others. Ask about our writers’ credentials when you reach out.

Rule 5: Insist on Strong Guarantees and Unlimited Revisions

Why Guarantees Matter

This might be the most critical rule of all: a weak or non-existent guarantee with limited revision policies is a massive red flag. When a writing service won’t guarantee their work or severely limits your ability to request modifications, they’re signaling that they don’t stand behind their deliverables.

Legitimate academic writing services provide:

Plagiarism-Free Guarantees: Your project will be 100% original, verified by Turnitin or similar detection systems. If plagiarism is detected, the service rewrites the work at no cost.

Unlimited Revisions Within Reason: You can request modifications for clarity, accuracy, depth, formatting, or any other concern until you’re satisfied. This applies during the revision period (typically 5-10 days post-delivery).

Money-Back Guarantees: If the final product fails to meet agreed specifications, you receive a full refund.

On-Time Delivery Guarantees: If your project isn’t delivered by the agreed deadline, you receive a refund or extension at no additional cost.

Confidentiality Guarantees: Your personal information and project details remain completely private.

Reading the Fine Print

Before hiring any service, carefully review their guarantee policy. Look for:

Revision limits (“limited to 3 revisions” = run away)

Revision scope restrictions (“revisions must be within 10% of original word count” = problematic)

Exclusions or exemptions that narrow when guarantees apply

Tight revision windows that don’t allow proper review time

Refund conditions that make money-back guarantees nearly impossible to claim

If a service has weak guarantees or limited revision policies, walk away. You’re paying for a critical academic project. You deserve unlimited ability to request reasonable modifications.

Rule 6: Verify Portfolios with Published Works and References

The Portfolio Paradox

A portfolio showing a writing service’s best work sounds valuable but has a critical limitation: they’ll only show you their best pieces. This creates two problems:

Best Work ≠ Consistent Quality: A service may have one or two excellent samples they reuse for every prospect, while their average work is mediocre.

Authenticity Questions: In extreme cases, unethical services hire skilled writers specifically to create portfolio samples they then attribute to less-capable writers who actually service clients.

A portfolio alone shouldn’t drive your hiring decision.

Verifying Real Work and References

Published Works: The strongest portfolio evidence is published work on the web. Ask if the service can provide links to articles, research projects, or published content their writers have created. Real, published work suggests genuine expertise and serves as external verification of quality.

Client References: Request contact information for past clients. Ask these references:

Did you receive original, high-quality work?

Were revisions handled professionally and promptly?

Was the final product delivered on time?

Did the project help you succeed academically?

Would you hire this service again?

Academic Institution Relationships: Legitimate services often work with university libraries, academic support centers, or have testimonials from students at recognized institutions. For services in Nigeria, look for partnerships with UNILAG, University of Ibadan, Covenant University, and other established universities. These relationships signal institutional trust.

Third-Party Reviews: Look beyond the service’s own website. Search for independent reviews on Google, Trustpilot, or academic forums. What do people who aren’t being actively marketed to say about the service?

How to Get Complete Project Materials

Getting your complete project material (Chapter 1-5, References, and all documentation) is simple and fast:

Option 1: Browse & Select
Review the topics from the list here, choose one that interests you, then contact us with your selected topic.

How to Find a Legitimate Research Writing Service

Your Research Process

The initial temptation when seeking a research project writing service is to search Google for relevant keywords and hire whoever appears first. This approach often leads to disaster. Instead, implement a structured evaluation process:

Identify 5-10 Potential Services: Look for services with specific expertise in your project type (thesis, dissertation, research proposal, etc.) and your academic level (undergraduate, postgraduate, PhD).

Apply the Six Rules: Evaluate each service against the criteria we’ve discussed. Eliminate services with weak guarantees, high copy-paste risk, intermediary structures, or weak credentials immediately.

Check Institutional Relationships: For Nigerian students, identify services that explicitly work with your institution. Services familiar with your university’s specific requirements, formatting standards, and faculty expectations will deliver better results.

Request Information Sessions: Contact the remaining services. Schedule phone calls or video meetings. Ask detailed questions about their process, your assigned writer, revision policies, and timelines. Notice how professionally and thoroughly they respond.

Request Sample Work: Ask for a writing sample or excerpt from a completed project in your field. Notice the quality, clarity, depth of research, and adherence to academic standards.

Start Small: If this is your first time working with a service, don’t hire them for your entire dissertation. Request help with a literature review, research proposal, or specific chapter first. This lets you evaluate quality and process with lower risk.

Types of Academic Writing Services

Quality academic writing service organizations typically offer multiple service types:

Complete Project Writing: Full research projects, final year projects, dissertations, and theses written from research through final submission-ready delivery.

Chapter-Specific Writing: Individual chapters like Chapter 1 (Introduction), Chapter 2 (Literature Review), Chapter 3 (Methodology), etc., allowing you to complete other chapters yourself.

Research Proposal Development: Comprehensive research proposals that outline your study design, methodology, and expected outcomes for supervisor approval.

Literature Review Services: In-depth literature reviews that synthesize current research, identify gaps, and establish theoretical frameworks for your study. Learn more about literature review writing.

Editing and Revision Services: Professional editing of your draft work, including language polish, structural improvements, citation corrections, and formatting alignment.

Journal Article Support: Help developing research into publishable journal articles, including structure optimization and peer review preparation.

Methodology Support: Assistance developing your research methodology section, including research design justification, data collection methods, and analytical approaches.

Statistical Analysis Services: Help with quantitative data analysis, including software use (SPSS, STATA, R), statistical test selection, and results interpretation.

Look for services offering this breadth of options, as it suggests institutional sophistication and genuine academic expertise across multiple areas.

Is hiring an academic writing service ethical?

This depends on how you use the service. Hiring someone to write your project from scratch and submitting it without revision or understanding would violate academic integrity. However, using writing services as support tools—having expert writers help you develop your research, improve your drafts, understand methodology, or polish your work—is standard academic practice. Universities have writing centers, tutors, and advisors who provide similar support. The key

Understanding the Purpose of Your Thesis Conclusion

When you’re nearing the end of your thesis, dissertation, or major research project, you’re likely feeling a mix of relief and uncertainty. You’ve conducted extensive research, analyzed data, and presented your findings. But now comes a critical section that many students struggle with: the conclusion. This is your final opportunity to leave a lasting impression on your reader and demonstrate the true value of your work.

The conclusion chapter or section serves a fundamental purpose that’s often misunderstood. It’s not merely a place to wrap up loose ends or remind readers what you’ve already told them. Instead, it’s your moment to step back, reflect deeply on what you’ve discovered, and explain why it matters. Think of it as the crescendo of your academic work, where you synthesize everything you’ve presented and show your reader the bigger picture.

If you find yourself struggling with this critical section, know that you’re not alone. Many students underestimate the importance of a well-crafted conclusion, which can significantly impact how their work is received. This is precisely why PremiumResearchers specializes in helping students master their thesis conclusions. Our team of experienced academic writers understands that a strong conclusion can mean the difference between an acceptable thesis and an exceptional one. Whether you need guidance on crafting your conclusion or professional assistance from start to finish, we’re here to help you create a conclusion that truly stands out.

What Your Conclusion Should Actually Accomplish

Your conclusion has three primary missions. First, it should reinforce your research aim and demonstrate how you’ve fulfilled your objectives. Second, it should connect your findings back to the theoretical framework and existing literature you reviewed. Third, it should articulate the significance and implications of your work for your field, your industry, and the broader academic community.

This is fundamentally different from summarizing your work. Many students make the mistake of turning their conclusion into an extended abstract, recounting everything they’ve already presented. Your readers have already seen your findings section. They don’t need you to repeat it. What they need from your conclusion is insight, analysis, and perspective that only you can provide as the researcher who has lived with this project.

Connect Your Findings to Your Literature Review

One of the most critical elements of an effective conclusion is demonstrating how your findings relate to the existing body of knowledge in your field. During your literature review, you identified gaps, contradictions, and areas where previous research fell short. Now, in your conclusion, you need to explicitly show how your research addresses these gaps or advances the conversation.

Ask yourself these important questions as you write this section:

Do my findings align with what previous researchers have discovered, or do they challenge established knowledge?

If my results confirm previous studies, what new context or industry do they apply to?

Have I discovered something that contradicts earlier research, and if so, what might explain this contradiction?

Do my findings complement existing research by adding a different perspective or methodology?

How do my results extend the boundaries of current knowledge in my field?

For example, imagine your thesis investigates employee motivation strategies in Nigerian tech startups. Your literature review referenced international studies on motivation that were primarily conducted in Western corporate environments. In your conclusion, you’d explain how your findings either confirm these international theories within the Nigerian context or reveal unique cultural factors that create different motivation drivers.

Positioning Your Work Within the Academic Landscape

This positioning is crucial because it demonstrates that you haven’t conducted your research in a vacuum. You’ve considered what came before, understood the current state of knowledge, and contributed something meaningful to the conversation. This is what separates a merely adequate conclusion from an exceptional one.

When connecting your findings to literature, be specific. Don’t just say “my results support previous research.” Instead, explain exactly which studies, theories, or frameworks your work validates, extends, or challenges. Use direct citations and create explicit connections. This specificity shows rigor and builds credibility.

Restate Your Research Aim and How Objectives Were Met

Early in your conclusion, you should explicitly remind your reader of your original research aim. This isn’t a lengthy restatement, but rather a clear reminder of what you set out to achieve. Then, systematically demonstrate how you met each objective you established in your introduction.

If you had multiple research objectives, address each one individually. Show what you did to fulfill that objective, what you discovered, and how that discovery contributes to answering your overarching research question. This systematic approach provides clarity and demonstrates thorough, organized thinking.

Consider this structure for each objective:

State the objective clearly

Briefly describe the approach you took to address it

Summarize the key finding related to this objective

Explain how this finding advances understanding in your field

Closing the Research Loop

By systematically addressing each objective, you create a sense of completion and closure. Your reader can clearly see that you’ve delivered on the promises you made at the beginning of your work. This fulfills a fundamental expectation of academic writing and strengthens the overall credibility of your thesis or dissertation.

Include Your Personal Reflection and Significance

This is where your conclusion becomes truly personal and unique. Beyond the mechanics of connecting findings to literature and addressing objectives, your conclusion should include your informed reflection on what you’ve discovered. This is the section where only you can provide value, because only you have conducted this specific research journey.

Consider these reflection questions:

What surprised you about your findings?

What is the practical significance of what you’ve discovered?

How will your work influence your field or industry?

What contribution does your research make to broader academic conversations?

Who benefits from knowing what you’ve discovered, and how?

What doors does your research open for future investigation?

Your personal reflection should answer the fundamental question: why does this matter? Why should anyone care about your findings beyond the academic requirement to complete a thesis or dissertation? What real-world impact could your work have?

Demonstrating Multiple Levels of Significance

When articulating significance, consider multiple dimensions. How does your work contribute to:

Academic Contribution: Does it challenge existing theories, validate new approaches, or fill a research gap?

Industry Impact: Can practitioners use your findings to improve processes, make better decisions, or solve problems?

Social Contribution: Does your work address issues that affect communities, organizations, or society at large?

Methodological Advancement: Did you employ or develop new research methods that others might adopt?

Why Your Conclusion is Not a Summary

This is perhaps the most important distinction to understand: your conclusion is not your abstract or summary. This is where many students go wrong. They approach their conclusion as an opportunity to condense everything they’ve written into a few paragraphs, essentially retelling their entire thesis in miniature form.

Let’s be clear about what each section accomplishes:

Abstract: Provides a concise overview (typically one page) of your entire research project, including your research question, methodology, findings, and conclusions. It’s designed to give readers a quick understanding of what you’ve done.

Summary sections within chapters: Recap key points within individual chapters to help readers consolidate information.

Conclusion: Synthesizes and reflects on what you’ve learned, connects your work to the broader academic conversation, and explains why it matters. It’s analytical and reflective, not recapitulative.

What Your Conclusion Should Include Instead

Rather than summarizing your findings, your conclusion should:

Briefly remind readers of your research aim and objectives (not describe your entire methodology or all findings)

Reflect critically on what your findings mean

Connect your work to existing literature and theoretical frameworks

Discuss the implications of your findings

Acknowledge limitations of your work

Suggest directions for future research

Articulate the value and significance of your contribution

This distinction is crucial because your conclusion should demonstrate intellectual maturity and critical thinking. If it simply repeats what you’ve already written, you’re missing the opportunity to show that you’ve truly internalized and can meaningfully interpret your own research.

Highlight Why Your Work Matters

In a well-crafted conclusion, you must explicitly articulate the importance of your work. Don’t assume readers will understand why your research matters. Make it clear, direct, and compelling.

This means moving beyond academic language to explain real-world implications. If your thesis is about optimizing supply chain management in small enterprises, don’t just say “the findings contribute to supply chain literature.” Instead, explain that small business owners can implement these strategies to reduce costs by X percent, improve delivery times, or enhance customer satisfaction.

Making Your Work Relevant to Your Audience

Consider who will read your conclusion. Your supervisor, your examination committee, other academic researchers in your field, and potentially practitioners who might apply your findings. Ensure you’ve addressed the “so what?” question for each of these audiences.

Your conclusion should make readers think, “This research was worth doing, and these findings will influence how I think about this topic or how I work in this field.” That’s the impact you’re aiming for.

Final Recommendations for Writing Your Conclusion

As you approach writing your conclusion, keep these evidence-based recommendations in mind:

1. Be Specific, Not Generic

Avoid vague statements like “this research is important” or “future studies could explore this further.” Instead, be specific about who will benefit from your work, how they’ll benefit, and what specific future research directions are most promising given your findings.

2. Acknowledge Limitations Honestly

A strong conclusion includes honest discussion of your work’s limitations. Did your sample size constrain generalizability? Were there time or resource constraints? Were certain populations underrepresented? Acknowledging these limitations doesn’t weaken your conclusion; it demonstrates intellectual honesty and helps readers understand the appropriate scope of your findings.

3. Avoid Introducing New Information

Your conclusion should synthesize and reflect on what you’ve already presented. This isn’t the place to introduce new findings, new literature, or new arguments that you haven’t previously discussed. Save new material for the body of your thesis.

4. Maintain Academic Tone While Being Clear

Your conclusion should remain academically rigorous, but it can be more accessible than earlier chapters. You can use more straightforward language to explain implications and significance. This makes your conclusion memorable and impactful.

5. Consult Your Supervisor About Expectations

Different supervisors and institutions have varying expectations for conclusions. Some prefer more emphasis on practical implications, others on theoretical contributions. Some want future research directions prominently featured, while others don’t. Before finalizing your conclusion, clarify your supervisor’s expectations and preferences.

6. Consider Professional Feedback

Common Mistakes to Avoid in Your Thesis Conclusion

Understanding what not to do is just as important as knowing what you should do. Many talented researchers undermine their excellent work with poorly executed conclusions. Here are the most common pitfalls:

Mistake 1: Treating Your Conclusion as a Summary

As discussed earlier, concluding by simply recapping your findings weakens your work. Your reader already knows what you found. They need you to explain why it matters and how it fits into the broader academic landscape.

Mistake 2: Introducing New Data or Arguments

Save all new information for the body of your thesis. Your conclusion is for synthesis and reflection, not for presenting findings you haven’t previously discussed. Introducing new material here confuses readers and suggests poor planning.

Mistake 3: Overstating Your Findings

While you should highlight the significance of your work, avoid exaggerating its importance or claiming broader applicability than your research actually supports. If your study examined only large enterprises, don’t claim your findings apply to small businesses. Integrity in academic writing is paramount.

Mistake 4: Using Vague Future Research Suggestions

Generic suggestions like “future research could explore this topic” or “more studies are needed” don’t add value. Instead, be specific about what future research directions emerge logically from your findings and why they’re important.

Mistake 5: Ending With a Weak or Apologetic Tone

Don’t end your conclusion with hedging language like “while this research is limited,” “although more work is needed,” or “despite these constraints.” While acknowledging limitations is important, your conclusion should end on a note of confident contribution, not apology. You’ve done serious work; conclude by standing behind it.

What a Strong Conclusion Looks Like: Example Framework

To help you visualize what we’ve discussed, here’s a structural framework for a strong conclusion:

Opening Sentences (2-3 sentences): Restate your research aim and primary objectives in clear, straightforward language. This reminds readers what you set out to accomplish.

Addressing Objectives (1-2 paragraphs): Systematically explain how your research addressed each key objective and what you discovered in relation to each.

Connecting to Literature (1-2 paragraphs): Discuss how your findings relate to existing research. Do they confirm, challenge, extend, or contradict previous work?

Significance and Implications (1-2 paragraphs): Explain why your findings matter. Who benefits? What changes might result from your work? What problems does it help solve?

Limitations and Boundaries (1 paragraph): Honestly acknowledge what your research couldn’t address or limitations that affect its generalizability.

Future Directions (1 paragraph): Suggest specific avenues for future research that logically follow from your findings.

Closing Statement (2-3 sentences): End with a confident articulation of your contribution to the field.

This framework isn’t rigid. Your specific conclusion may emphasize different elements depending on your field, your supervisor’s expectations, and the nature of your research. However, this structure ensures you cover all the essential components of a strong conclusion.

Field-Specific Considerations for Your Conclusion

While the principles we’ve discussed apply across disciplines, different fields sometimes emphasize different aspects in conclusions.

In Sciences and Engineering

Conclusions often emphasize the practical applications of findings and their implications for future research or technological development. There’s typically strong emphasis on limitations and what questions remain unanswered.

In Social Sciences and Business

Conclusions frequently emphasize implications for policy, practice, and organizational decision-making. There’s often discussion of how findings might influence professional practice or institutional policies.

In Humanities

Conclusions might emphasize the broader cultural, historical, or philosophical implications of your interpretations. There’s often stronger emphasis on voice and perspective.

Regardless of your field, check your department’s thesis guidelines and discuss expectations with your supervisor to ensure your conclusion aligns with discipline-specific conventions.

Ready to Write or Refine Your Conclusion?

Crafting an effective conclusion requires careful thought, critical reflection, and often multiple revisions. Many students find this process challenging because it requires stepping back from the detailed work of research to think strategically about what it all means. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or uncertain about your approach, remember that help is available.

Frequently Asked Questions About Writing Your Thesis Conclusion

How long should my conclusion be?

There’s no universal rule, but conclusions typically comprise 5-10% of your total thesis length. A 10,000-word dissertation might have a 500-1000 word conclusion. However, always check your department’s specific guidelines. The key is that your conclusion should be long enough to adequately address all necessary elements without becoming repetitive. Quality and content matter more than length.

Can I use first person in my conclusion?

This depends on your field and your institution’s preferences. In many disciplines, particularly sciences, third person is preferred. However, in social sciences, humanities, and qualitative research, first person is often acceptable and can be effective in articulating your personal reflection on findings. When discussing your own research process and interpretation, phrases like “I found” or “we observed” can actually strengthen clarity and authenticity. Check your guidelines or ask your supervisor about preferences.

Should I discuss limitations in my conclusion?

Yes, absolutely. A strong conclusion includes honest discussion of your work’s limitations. This demonstrates intellectual honesty and helps readers understand the appropriate scope and applicability of your findings. However, balance this by also articulating why these limitations don’t undermine the value of your contribution. Rather than apologizing for limitations, explain how future research can address them.

How do I avoid making my conclusion too broad or making claims I can’t support?

Be specific about the scope of your research and the generalizability of your findings. If your research examined small businesses in Lagos, don’t claim your findings apply to all of Nigeria or all businesses globally. Use qualified language: “within this context” or “for organizations similar to those studied.” Base all claims on evidence you’ve actually presented in your thesis. When suggesting broader implications, frame them as possibilities worth investigating in future research rather than certainties.

What’s the difference between my conclusion and my recommendations section (if I have one)?

Your conclusion discusses what your research found and why it matters. A recommendations section (common in applied research like management or policy studies) goes further to specifically suggest actions that stakeholders should take based on your findings. Not all theses include recommendations. If yours does, recommendations typically come after your conclusion and represent concrete, actionable suggestions based on your research.

Why Your Statement of Problem Matters More Than You Think

If you’re starting your final year project or research thesis, you’ve probably heard that your statement of problem is critical. But do you understand why? Your statement of problem isn’t just a formality or a box to check—it’s the most persuasive section of your entire project. It’s where you convince your supervisor, your examiners, and ultimately your readers that your research deserves attention and resources.

The harsh reality is this: a weak statement of problem can sink even brilliant research. Conversely, a compelling statement of problem can make reviewers overlook minor weaknesses in your methodology because they’re convinced the problem you’re solving truly matters. This section determines whether your project gets approval, funding, or interest from the academic community.

Here’s the challenge most Nigerian students face: while everyone knows a statement of problem is important, many struggle to write one that truly resonates. They either make it too vague (“Technology is changing things”), too broad (“The world has problems”), or too focused on definitions rather than demonstrating real impact. This is precisely where many projects lose marks unnecessarily—not because the research itself is weak, but because it wasn’t presented compellingly.

This is where PremiumResearchers comes in. We’ve helped hundreds of Nigerian students and postgraduate researchers craft statement of problems that don’t just meet requirements—they impress. Our team understands what lecturers at institutions like UNILAG, University of Nigeria, and other major universities are looking for. More importantly, we understand the specific structure and evidence that makes a statement of problem undeniably compelling.

But whether you work with us or write it yourself, understanding the 5-paragraph technique we’re about to share will transform how you approach this critical section. Let’s dive in.

Understanding the 5-Paragraph Technique for Writing a Statement of Problem

The 5-paragraph approach to writing a statement of problem isn’t arbitrary. It mirrors the way humans naturally think about problems and how researchers intuitively structure their arguments. Think of it as a narrative arc: you establish the setting (broader context), introduce the conflict (specific problem), acknowledge previous attempts at resolution (literature gaps), explain the stakes (consequences), and point toward a solution (research direction).

Each paragraph builds systematically on the one before it, creating momentum that naturally leads readers toward understanding why your research needs to happen. This structure ensures you include all essential elements without overwhelming readers or getting lost in unnecessary details.

Here’s why this technique works consistently:

Creates logical flow: Moves readers from broad context to your specific research focus in a way that feels natural, not forced

Ensures completeness: You won’t accidentally skip critical elements like discussing existing research or explaining consequences

Maintains focus: Forces you to stay disciplined and avoid common pitfalls like excessive definitions or tangential information

Blends evidence with narrative: Allows you to weave statistics and research findings into a compelling story rather than just listing facts

Impresses supervisors: Shows structured, sophisticated thinking that examiners recognize and reward

The Five Paragraphs Explained

Paragraph 1: Context & Trend

Sets the broader landscape of your research area

Highlights relevant trends, developments, or shifts in your field

Establishes why this area matters on a bigger scale

Provides statistics or evidence showing momentum in this field

Paragraph 2: Specific Problem

Narrows focus from the broader context to your specific research area

Presents concrete examples, case studies, or evidence of the problem

Shows real-world implications and who is affected

Demonstrates that the problem is measurable and significant

Paragraph 3: Previous Efforts & Knowledge Gap

Acknowledges existing research, solutions, or initiatives

Identifies limitations, shortcomings, or why these efforts are insufficient

Articulates clearly what’s missing in current knowledge or practice

Shows why existing solutions don’t fully address the problem

Paragraph 4: Consequences & Implications

Explains what happens if the problem remains unaddressed

Highlights urgency and importance to stakeholders

Links consequences to broader economic, social, or organizational impacts

Makes clear that solving this problem matters beyond just academic interest

Paragraph 5: Research Direction & Value

Briefly indicates your intended research approach or focus

Links naturally to your research questions and objectives

Shows the potential value and applications of your research

Identifies who will benefit from your findings

Complete Example: Digital Financial Inclusion in Nigeria

Let’s walk through a complete, real-world example of a statement of problem using our 5-paragraph technique. This example addresses digital financial inclusion in rural Nigeria—a topic many Nigerian researchers are investigating. As you read, notice how each paragraph serves its specific function and builds naturally on the previous one.

Paragraph 1: Context & Trend

The rapid digitalization of financial services has transformed global banking landscapes, with mobile banking and digital payments becoming increasingly central to financial inclusion initiatives worldwide. In Africa, mobile money users grew from 277 million in 2016 to over 562 million by 2021, marking a significant shift in how populations access financial services. Nigeria, despite being Africa’s largest economy, has seen relatively slower adoption of digital financial services, with only 45% of adults having access to digital banking platforms, significantly below the government’s target of 80% financial inclusion. This disparity suggests that while global and continental trends are moving toward digital finance, Nigeria faces unique barriers that have prevented mainstream adoption despite the enabling environment.

Why this works: This opening establishes the broader context (global digitalization trend), provides credible statistics (277 million to 562 million users), narrows focus to Nigeria, and ends by suggesting there’s a problem. It doesn’t define digital finance or explain what mobile money is—it assumes readers understand these basics and focuses on the gap in Nigeria’s performance.

Paragraph 2: Specific Problem

Despite significant investments in digital banking infrastructure, rural communities in Nigeria face persistent barriers to digital financial adoption. Recent surveys indicate that 67% of rural adults remain unbanked, with limited access to smartphones, unreliable internet connectivity, and low digital literacy emerging as primary obstacles. In Northern Nigeria particularly, only 23% of rural women have access to digital financial services, creating a significant gender gap in financial inclusion. These barriers persist even as traditional banking branches continue to close in rural areas due to profitability concerns, leaving many communities without any formal financial services whatsoever. This creates a situation where rural Nigerians are simultaneously abandoned by traditional banking and unable to access digital alternatives.

Why this works: The focus tightens to the specific problem (rural communities), uses concrete statistics (67% unbanked, 23% for women), identifies specific barriers, and shows real consequences (bank closures). The final sentence synthesizes the problem into a compelling statement that sets up why this needs to be solved.

Paragraph 3: Previous Efforts & Knowledge Gap

While various stakeholders have attempted to address digital financial inclusion through initiatives like mobile money agents, simplified Know-Your-Customer (KYC) requirements, and government-funded literacy programs, these efforts have yielded limited success in rural areas. Government policies focused on infrastructure development have primarily benefited urban centers, while digital literacy programs designed for urban populations don’t account for the unique context of rural communities. Current research has extensively documented access barriers and technical obstacles, but offers limited insight into effective strategies for overcoming cultural resistance and building trust in digital financial services among rural populations, particularly among women and elderly citizens who are most likely to distrust digital systems.

Why this works: Acknowledges that efforts exist (mobile money agents, literacy programs), explains why they haven’t worked (focus on urban areas), and identifies the specific research gap (cultural factors and trust-building). This is where you demonstrate you’ve done your literature review and understand what’s already been attempted.

Paragraph 4: Consequences & Implications

The persistent digital financial exclusion of rural communities carries significant socioeconomic implications for Nigeria’s development trajectory. Without access to digital financial services, rural small businesses struggle to participate in e-commerce and digital value chains, limiting their growth potential and contribution to the national economy. The lack of digital financial access also hampers the effectiveness of government social welfare and emergency programs—a lesson painfully learned during the COVID-19 pandemic when rural residents couldn’t receive direct cash transfers due to lack of registered digital accounts. Furthermore, continued reliance on cash transactions exposes rural populations to security risks, prevents them from building formal credit histories, and perpetuates the cycle of financial exclusion that disadvantages rural communities economically.

Why this works: Shows clear consequences (limited business growth, inability to receive government transfers, security risks) that extend beyond just the research interest. The COVID-19 reference grounds this in real experience many readers understand. This paragraph creates urgency and makes clear that this problem affects real people and the nation’s economy.

Paragraph 5: Research Direction & Value

This research aims to investigate effective strategies for increasing digital financial adoption in rural Nigeria, with particular focus on addressing cultural barriers and building institutional trust. By examining successful cases of digital financial inclusion in similar rural African contexts and analyzing how community-based approaches can foster trust, this study seeks to develop a practical framework for sustainable digital financial inclusion that accounts for local cultural nuances and practical constraints. The findings will be valuable for policymakers designing financial inclusion programs, financial institutions developing rural strategies, development organizations implementing inclusion projects, and contribute to the broader academic understanding of how trust and cultural factors influence technology adoption in developing economies.

Why this works: Clearly states what you’ll investigate (cultural barriers and trust), indicates your approach (examining successful cases, analyzing community approaches), and identifies concrete beneficiaries (policymakers, financial institutions, development organizations). It doesn’t promise to solve the problem—just to contribute valuable insights.

Note: Notice throughout this example that we haven’t included long definitions, haven’t gone off on tangents, and haven’t tried to cover everything about financial inclusion. We’ve stayed tightly focused on a specific problem in a specific context. This focus is what makes statements of problem powerful.

Second Example: Cybersecurity in Nigerian SMEs

Here’s another complete statement of problem example, this time addressing cybersecurity vulnerabilities in Nigerian Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). This example shows how the 5-paragraph technique works across different research contexts.

Paragraph 1: Context & Trend

The exponential growth of digital transformation among businesses globally has made cybersecurity a critical concern, with cyber attacks causing estimated annual losses of $6 trillion worldwide. In Nigeria, the rapid adoption of digital tools for business operations—accelerated by pandemic-driven remote work adoption—has created new vulnerabilities and expanded the attack surface for malicious actors. Recent industry reports indicate a 177% increase in cyber attacks targeting Nigerian businesses between 2020 and 2023, with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) becoming increasingly attractive targets due to their typically weaker security infrastructure compared to enterprise-level organizations.

Paragraph 2: Specific Problem

Despite the escalating threat landscape, Nigerian SMEs demonstrate alarming unpreparedness for cyber threats. A recent industry assessment reveals that 82% of Nigerian SMEs lack basic cybersecurity protocols such as firewalls, antivirus software, or employee security awareness training. A 2023 cybersecurity report found that 67% of Nigerian SMEs experienced at least one cyber attack in the past year, with average losses of ₦3.5 million per incident—a devastating amount for businesses with limited financial buffers. More concerning, 73% of affected businesses lack formal incident response plans, leaving them vulnerable to repeated attacks and potentially catastrophic data breaches that could force permanent closure.

Paragraph 3: Previous Efforts & Knowledge Gap

While comprehensive cybersecurity frameworks and solutions exist for enterprise-level organizations, these resources prove impractical or financially unfeasible for SMEs operating with limited budgets and technical expertise. Current research predominantly examines technical security solutions and frameworks designed for large organizations with dedicated IT departments and significant security investments. Existing studies have paid insufficient attention to the unique constraints facing Nigerian SMEs—limited IT expertise, budget restrictions, and resource limitations—or the critical role that organizational culture and employee behavior play in cybersecurity readiness within this specific context. This creates a significant gap between available cybersecurity solutions and the practical needs of resource-constrained Nigerian SMEs.

Paragraph 4: Consequences & Implications

The continued vulnerability of Nigerian SMEs to cyber threats poses risks extending far beyond individual businesses. Compromised SMEs often serve as entry points for attackers to penetrate larger organizations within their supply chains, threatening the integrity of entire business ecosystems and financial networks. The financial impact of successful attacks forces many SMEs to either cease operations entirely or revert to less efficient manual processes, undermining Nigeria’s broader digital transformation agenda. Moreover, the lack of confidence in cybersecurity capabilities discourages SMEs from adopting potentially beneficial digital tools and platforms, hampering their competitiveness in an increasingly digital marketplace and limiting their growth potential.

Paragraph 5: Research Direction & Value

This study seeks to develop a practical, cost-effective cybersecurity framework specifically tailored to the needs and capabilities of Nigerian SMEs. By examining successful cybersecurity practices among resource-constrained organizations and analyzing the behavioral and organizational culture aspects of cybersecurity implementation, this research aims to bridge the gap between theoretical security frameworks and practical implementation challenges. The findings will contribute to both academic understanding of SME cybersecurity in developing economies and provide actionable guidelines that business owners, managers, and policymakers can implement immediately to strengthen their organizations’ security posture.

Best Practices and Professional Tips for Writing Your Statement of Problem

Now that you understand the structure, here are proven practices that make statements of problem truly shine. These are techniques we use at PremiumResearchers when crafting statements of problem for clients, and they work consistently across disciplines.

1. Ground Everything in Recent, Credible Evidence

Never make claims without evidence. Every significant statement in your problem statement should be supported by data, research, or established facts. Use statistics from reputable sources (peer-reviewed journals, government reports, international organizations). Avoid vague phrases like “many people” or “it’s widely known”—instead, cite the actual number and source: “67% of rural adults remain unbanked, according to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s 2023 financial inclusion survey.”

When citing statistics, consider the publication date and relevance. Try to use the most recent data available, but don’t force outdated statistics just to fill space. Examiners notice and penalize weak evidence choices.

2. Maintain Relentless Focus on Your Specific Problem

The statement of problem should be tightly focused, not broadly ambitious. Don’t try to address every aspect of your research area. Instead, identify the specific problem within the broader context. Compare these two approaches:

Too Broad: “Digital financial services have many challenges in Nigeria.”

Appropriately Focused: “Rural women in Nigeria face specific barriers—limited smartphone access, unreliable connectivity, and low digital literacy—that prevent them from adopting digital financial services, while existing solutions fail to address the trust and cultural factors that drive adoption decisions.”

The focused version clearly delineates what problem you’re addressing, who it affects, and why existing solutions are insufficient. This clarity is what gets projects approved.

3. Use Strategic Transition Sentences Between Paragraphs

Your five paragraphs should feel connected, not like separate essays. Use transition sentences that bridge paragraphs. For example:

“While these global trends are encouraging, Nigeria presents a starkly different picture…” (transitions from global context to Nigeria-specific problem).

“Government initiatives and private sector efforts have attempted to address these barriers, yet significant gaps remain…” (transitions from problem to existing solutions/gaps).

These connectors create the “story” quality that makes strong problem statements memorable and persuasive.

4. Show Impact Through Specific Examples, Not General Claims

Instead of saying “the problem has serious consequences,” give concrete examples:

Weak: “This problem has important implications.”

Strong: “During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Federal Government attempted to disburse emergency cash transfers to vulnerable households, but 34% of intended recipients couldn’t receive payments because they lacked registered digital accounts, demonstrating how financial exclusion becomes a humanitarian issue during crises.”

Specific examples demonstrate depth of understanding and make the problem real to readers.

5. Acknowledge the Problem’s Complexity Without Getting Lost in It

Sophisticated problem statements recognize that problems are multifaceted. Your job isn’t to solve everything—it’s to identify and focus on a specific, manageable aspect. For example: “While digital financial exclusion results from multiple factors including infrastructure, policy, and individual behavior, this study focuses specifically on the trust and cultural factors that prevent adoption, as current research provides limited understanding in this area.”

This shows intellectual maturity and realistic scope.

6. Avoid Lengthy Definitions—They Weaken Your Problem Statement

Many students waste valuable space defining terms. Don’t write: “Digital financial inclusion refers to the provision of financial services to previously unbanked populations through digital channels, which includes mobile money, internet banking, and digital wallets.” This belongs in your literature review or definition of terms section, not your problem statement.

If you must mention a term readers might not know, define it briefly in passing: “digital financial services (mobile money, internet banking, and digital wallets)” rather than dedicating sentences to it.

7. Prefer Active Voice and Dynamic Language

Passive and weak: “It has been observed that barriers exist to digital financial inclusion in rural areas.”

Active and strong: “Rural communities face persistent barriers to digital financial inclusion, including limited smartphone access, unreliable internet connectivity, and insufficient digital literacy.”

Active voice creates energy and conviction. It makes your problem statement more compelling and easier to read.

Common Mistakes That Weaken Your Statement of Problem

Understanding what NOT to do is just as important as knowing what to do. Here are the mistakes we see most frequently in student problem statements—and how to avoid them.

Mistake 1: Making Claims Without Evidence

Every significant claim needs backing. Phrases like “many researchers believe,” “it is generally accepted,” or “studies show” without citations undermine credibility. Supervisors and examiners immediately recognize unsupported assertions and penalize them.

Always ask yourself: “Could someone challenge this claim? If yes, I need a citation or data.”

Mistake 2: Being Too Vague or Too Broad

“Technology is changing healthcare” is too vague. “Telemedicine platforms lack integration with Nigeria’s primary health care system in rural areas, preventing patients from accessing specialist consultations remotely despite having smartphone access” is appropriately specific.

Vagueness suggests you don’t fully understand your own research problem. Specificity demonstrates mastery.

Mistake 3: Introducing New Problems in Later Paragraphs

Your statement of problem should address ONE problem, viewed from multiple angles. Don’t introduce a second or third problem in paragraph 4 or 5. This confuses readers and suggests a lack of focus.

If you find yourself wanting to address multiple problems, choose the most important one and commit to it throughout.

Mistake 4: Spending More Time on Literature Review Than Problem Articulation

Your statement of problem should present the problem and gap in knowledge, not comprehensively review all related literature. That’s your literature review section’s job. Acknowledge existing research, highlight gaps, and move on.

A common proportion: 20% of your problem statement should discuss existing research/solutions; 80% should focus on your specific problem and why it matters.

Mistake 5: Failing to Explain Why the Problem Matters Beyond Academic Interest

The strongest problem statements connect academic problems to real-world consequences. Why should anyone outside academia care about this problem?

Weak: “No research has examined this specific phenomenon, so this study fills a literature gap.”

Strong: “This problem affects 3.2 million rural Nigerians, reduces agricultural productivity by 15%, and costs the economy ₦2.3 trillion annually. Understanding solutions would directly benefit both farmers and national economic growth.”

Connect to real impacts: economic costs, lives affected, opportunities lost, organizational challenges, social consequences. This transforms your problem from academic to urgent.

Mistake 6: Overpromising What Your Research Will Solve

Your statement of problem should NOT suggest you’ll solve the entire problem. Instead, it should indicate that you’ll contribute valuable insights or develop a specific framework.

Overpromising: “This research will solve the digital divide in rural Nigeria.”

Realistic: “This research will develop a practical framework for building trust in digital financial systems, contributing to understanding of how organizations can increase adoption in rural areas.”

Examiners respect realistic scope and punish inflated promises.

Your Statement of Problem Checklist

Before you consider your statement of problem complete, work through this checklist. Every item should receive a checkmark.

Does your first paragraph establish broader context?

Your opening should show why this topic area matters generally, before narrowing to your specific focus. Include trends, relevant developments, or global context.

Have you clearly identified the specific problem?

By paragraph 2, readers should understand precisely what problem you’re addressing. Not “financial inclusion is important,” but “rural women face these specific barriers to digital financial adoption.”

Is there clear evidence of a knowledge or practice gap?

Have you identified what research or solutions already exist, and what’s missing? This gap is what justifies your research.

Are consequences clearly articulated?

A reader should understand why this problem matters. What happens if it’s not solved? Who is affected? What opportunities are lost?

Does it lead naturally to your research objectives?

The problem statement should make your research questions and objectives feel inevitable—the logical next step after establishing the problem.

Are all major claims supported by evidence?

Go through each paragraph and verify that significant assertions have citations or data backing them. Avoid unsupported generalizations.

Is the writing clear, focused, and concise?

Remove redundancy, eliminate unnecessary definitions, and ensure every sentence serves a purpose. If you can cut a sentence without losing meaning, cut it.

Have you avoided excessive definitions or background information?

Your problem statement isn’t a textbook chapter. Brief references are fine; lengthy definitions are not. Save detailed background for your literature review.

DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF JOURNAL BEARING DEMONSTRATION RIG

ABSTRACT

The journal bearing demonstration rig is an apparatus that is used to study how the pressure would vary around the section of a journal bearing at various speeds of the shaft and loading conditions. The design of the journal bearing was done by the use of standard design procedures carefully stated within this work.

The frame, the journal bearing, the journal shaft, the base plate, and all relevant components of the apparatus were designed. Other parts not constructed were procured. The fabrication and construction processes were carried out in the workshop. The shaft to be used was machined on the lathe machine to the design specification. So also was the bearing to be used.

This was all explicitly discussed in this report. Frame construction was carried out by welding process also stated in the work. The spring damper support was another constructed part. The assembly was done in such a way that the eccentricity between the bearing and the shaft would exist so as to get results.

Relevant formulas, derivation and equation models were used in carrying out calculations used to get mathematical results that can be used to compare the experimental results. It is observed in the graph plotted from the experimental results, that the speed is proportionally or linear to the pressure build up in the journal bearing.

The pressure tapping (h5), shows the highest reading on the manometer board, ranging from 76cm for 1144rpm to 25cm for 572rpm due to eccentricity of the two centers (shaft and journal bearing).

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 INTRODUCTION
Hydrodynamic journal bearings are typical critical power transmission components that carry high loads in different machines. In machine design, therefore, it is essential to know the true or expected operating conditions of the bearings. These operating conditions can be studied both by experimental and mathematical means, for example in test rig experiments, in field or laboratory tests with engines and by calculation or simulation.

Numerous studies of the operating conditions of hydrodynamic journal bearings have been made during the last decades. Still, the case is far from closed. For example, there are a limited number of studies that carry out an in-depth examination of the true operating conditions of bearings in true-scale experiments. There is also a need for experimental studies to verify the theoretical ones.

Fluid friction i.e. viscosity which exists in the lubricant being used is studied alongside the pressure effect which is being generated in the bearing, thus the effect of lubricants with different viscosities are considered.
A simple journal bearing consists of two rigid cylinders.

The outer cylinder (bearing) wraps the inner rotating journal (shaft). A lubricant fills the small annular gap or clearance between the journal and the bearing. The amount of eccentricity of the journal is related to the pressure that will be generated in

the bearing to balance the radial load. The lubricant is supplied through a hole or a groove and may or may not extend all around the journal. The pressure around the journal is measured on various manometers by means of pressure pipe/tubes. This is done at various speeds to get the relationship between speed and the pressure.

1.2 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
In the late 1880s, experiments were being conducted on the lubrication of bearing surfaces. The idea of “floating” a load on a film of oil grew from the experiments of Beauchamp Tower and the theoretical work of Osborne Reynolds.

Prior to the development of the pivoted shoe thrust bearing, marine propulsion relied on a “horseshoe” bearing which consisted of several equally spaced collars to share the load, each on a sector of a thrust plate. The parallel surfaces rubbed, wore, and produced considerable friction.

Design unit loads were on the order of 40 psi. Comparison tests against a pivoted shoe thrust bearing of equal capacity showed that the pivoted shoe thrust bearing, at only 1/4 the size, had 1/7 the area but operated successfully with only 1/10 the frictional drag of the horseshoe bearing.

In 1896, inspired by the work of Osborne Reynolds, Albert Kingsbury conceived and tested a pivoted shoe thrust bearing. According to Dr. Kingsbury, the test bearings ran well. Small loads were applied first, on the order of 50 psi (which was typical of ship propeller shaft unit loads at the time). The loads were gradually increased, finally reaching 4000 psi, the speed being about 285 rpm.

In 1912, Albert Kingsbury was contracted by the Pennsylvania Water and Power Company to apply his design in their hydroelectric plant at Holtwood, PA. The existing roller bearings were causing extensive down times (several
outages a year) for inspections, repair and replacement. The first hydrodynamic pivoted shoe thrust bearing was installed in Unit 5 on June 22, 1912.

At start-up of the 12,000 kW units, the bearing wiped. In resolving the reason for failure, much was learned about tolerances and finishes required for the hydrodynamic bearings to operate. After properly finishing the runner and fitting the bearing, the unit ran with continued good operation. This bearing, owing to its merit of running 75 years with negligible wear under a load of 220 tons, was designated by ASME as the 23rd International Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark on June 27, 1987.

Since then, there has been series of progressive research carried out on bearings bringing to the advent of journal bearings which are not so different from the bearings designed by Osborne Reynolds and Albert Kingsbury which work on the same hydrodynamic lubrication system.

1.3 RESEARCH PROBLEM

The operating conditions of hydrodynamic journal bearings can be described by a set of tribological variables called key operating parameters. For example, the load level of a hydrodynamic journal bearing is described by two parameters: the specific load and the sliding speed.

The key operating parameters most directly related to the bearing lubricant-shaft contact are the oil film temperature, oil film thickness and oil film pressure. These three key parameters can be determined by experimental or mathematical means with varying levels of complexity.

Until now, oil film pressure in hydrodynamic journal bearings has been studied mainly by mathematical means, because the experimental determination of oil film pressure has been a demanding or even an unfeasible task. Under real operating conditions, there are typically many practicalities that complicate the experimental determination of true oil film pressure in a certain point or at a certain moment.

The oil film may be extremely thin and therefore sensitive to different disturbing factors, for example defects in geometry. In addition, the level of the oil film pressure may be extremely high or have a high level of dynamic variability.

1.4 AIM AND OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT

The research into the construction and design of the journal bearing apparatus has several reasons and purposes which need to be achieved and justified.

The main aim of the study was to determine the oil film pressure in hydrodynamic journal bearings carrying realistic loads. In addition, the relationship between the oil film pressure and other key operating parameters of journal bearings such as eccentricity and shaft speed was studied.

The study also included the determination of the relationship between the speed of rotation of the shaft, the pressure around the journal bearing and the oil thickness.

1.5 SCOPE OF THE PROJECT
The design and construction of journal bearing demonstration rig covers a very broad area. This area encompasses the design, design considerations, construction, assembly, working conditions and governing mathematical equations and laws.

The design gives in depth details of the construction and fabrication of the apparatus. The working conditions consist of the loading, acting pressures and the variable operating speed which the journal bearing apparatus undergoes. Relevant design calculations and equations to include the Pressure head calculation, Sommerfeld’s equation and number, Petroff’s equation and Reynold’s equation to mention a few, are contained in this work.

ABSTRACT

Local Government in Nigeria faces series of critical challenges like creating critical social services and how to sustain them. No Nation can boast of excellent performance within the public sector at the grass root if a large percentage of her rural inhabitants are facing uncontrollable abject poverty, needs/wants, socio-economic dilemmas, and basic social amenities.

However, in Nigeria, a series of social amenities at the grass-root reveals that the third tiers of government are lacking performance in the area of service delivery, and over the years has caused the citizens to lose both faith and trust in local government, the closet tier of government to them… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

INTRODUCTION

Background of Study

The system of local government administration practiced anywhere in the world, is dependent largely on the historical, geographical, sociological, political and economic life of the people. This is no less true of Nigeria with a long history of slavery and colonization as well as civilian and military administrations and these have to a large extent determined the system of local government administration in Nigeria up till today.

We intend in this work to look at the various reforms that local government system in Nigeria has witnessed since 1914 (Oyediran O., 1988). The Native Authority (NA) system was the first colonial system of local government administration whereby indirect rule and exploitation was the order of the day. A unified local government system was established in Northern Nigeria before it was extended to Southern Nigeria with varying degrees of success.

This system of local government as found in the Native Authorities did not satisfy the needs and aspirations of the local people, hence there were intense agitations from the local citizens, particularly the educated elites in Southern Nigeria craving for greater participation in their own affairs… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

Local government reforms are a welcome development in Nigeria because it tends to evaluate the performance of the local government administration; hence implement new policies to favour the local government in order to achieve socio-economic development.

But from all indications, it would appear that the problems with the various reforms have to do more with the operators of the systems and not the system per se. It is to this regard that the researchers desired to carry out an analysis on the challenges and prospects of local government reforms in Nigeria.

Research Objectives

The main aim of the research work is to examine the challenges and prospect of local government reforms in Nigeria. Other specific objectives of the study are:

to determine the effect of local government reforms on political stability and national development in Nigeria

to determine the relationship between government policies and the operators of the systems… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

LITERATURE REVIEW

Conceptual Perspectives

Local Government

Local government has been the concern of every responsive political system in the world. This is because; local government basically, is the involvement of grassroots people in the provision of social and economic amenities to the local areas. It is based on the principle that local problems and needs can be understood by the people of the locality better than by the Central or State government (Arowolo, 2008:4).

The existence of local government has always been defended on the basis that it is a crucial aspect of democratization and intensification of mass participation in the decision-making process. No political system is considered complete and democratic if it does not have a system of local government (Shah, 2006:15)… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

Service Delivery

Municipal research and services centre (MRSC, 1993) defines service delivery as the actual producing of a service such as collecting refuse and disposing it or lighting the streets. Staus (2005:5) supports this view and suggest that in economic transactions, it is specialized skills and knowledge that are exchanged for money rather than physical resources.

Whitaker (1980:11) observes that depending on the kind of service being offered each service has primary intention of transforming the customer and that the client himself/herself is the principal beneficiary… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

Local Governments as an Instrument of Service Delivery in Nigeria

Service delivery refers to the provision of social or public goods that will promote socio-economic wellbeing of the citizens. Public services offered by government are numerous and may include the provision of public utilities, security, economic development projects, and the enforcement of the law and so on.

The delivery of public goods and services at the local government or the grassroot is aimed at moving the standard of living of the populace to the next level (Angahar, 2013:15)… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

Theoretical Framework

This work adopted the Structural functionalist theory as postulated by Gabriel Almond, James Coleman and Bingham Powell. Almond (1960) started his study of the various political systems with an attempt at defining what a political system means. He disagreed with the definition provided by Max Weber, that a political system is a human community that (successfully) claims the monopoly of the legitimate use of physical force within a given territory (Weber, 1946:78).

He argued that this definition with its emphasis on the territory as one of the characteristics and on the right to use physical force being ascribed to other institutions or to individuals refers only to the state rather than to the political system. To Almond (1960), “Physical” means separating out a certain set of interactions in society in order to… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

THE EVOLUTION OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT REFORMS SYSTEM IN NIGERIA

Introduction

Local government system has undergone three phases in Nigeria. These are: Pre-colonial, Colonial and Post-Colonial Phases.

Local Government System in the Pre-Colonial Nigeria:

Local administration at the grassroots level in Nigeria had always been in operation since time immemorial among the various people now called Nigeria, even before the colonial masters set their feet on the soil of Nigeria (Awofeso, 2004:14).

Put differently, it is not debatable that the history of local government system in Nigeria is older than the advent of the erstwhile colonial masters. Colonialism, however, helped to widen the course of history of Nigerian administration systems as it contributed significantly to the evolution of modern local government in the country (Fatile, 2011:17)… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

Local Government System in the Post Colonial Nigeria:

The third phase took effect from Nigeria‟s independence of 1960. This phase was characterized by a multi-tiered local government structure in the Eastern and Western regions, where both elected and traditional elements were accommodated (Agagu, 2004; Ukwo, 2006; Agba, Akwara, and Idu, 2013). At this period different states operated the different systems of local government.

However, local government administration took a new dimension in 1976 local government reforms initiated by the Obasanjo led Military government. The 1976 local government reforms introduced a uniform system of local government administration throughout the country, recognized local government as third tier of government and granted financial and functional autonomy to local government administration in Nigeria… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

ASSESSMENT OF CHALLENGES OF REFORMED LOCAL GOVERNMENT IN SERVICE DELIVERY

Challenges and Problems of Local Governments in Nigeria Challenges and Problems of Local Governments in Nigeria

Corruption

One of the fundamental problems of contemporary Nigeria is corruption. It has thrived, progressed and flourished unabated. Corruption has been institutionalized to the point of accepting it as a part of our system. Albeit corruption is ubiquitous, it is found all over the world, but the degree of its manifestation varies from system to system (Lawal and Oladunjoye, 2010: 232).

Corruption is the greatest bane of local government administration in Nigeria. At the grassroots level, corruption has been canonically accommodated, entertained, and celebrated within the system. In the local government setting, corruption is misnomer labeled and euphemistically referred to as “Egunje” (a slogan which means “illegal offer” in Nigeria) and a major hindrance to good government… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Conclusion

The research assessed the services rendered by Local government in nigeria from 1999 and 2011, in areas of education, health care delivery, infrastructural development, etc. The local government in the period under review performed below expectation. There is no doubt that as a third tier of government it has a central role towards her area of jurisdiction, in terms of development.

This is an important reason that led to its establishment. It therefore, means that local government has meaning only when it contributes to the upliftment of the people‟s lives and state of living. Local government in nigeria had not succeeded in the performance of this role in the area during the period covered… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

Recommendations

The study offers some measures aimed at improving the performance of the local government system.

The local government system in Nigeria needs to be reorganized and restrategized in its policies and programmes to meet the specific needs of the people, in order to make it more functional in the rendering of services such as quality feeder roads, quality and affordable health care services, and improved access to quality educational services. (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

[ad_1] EVOLUTION OF THE ROLE OF MASS MEDIA IN INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA ABSTRACT This article provides […]

[ad_1]

EVOLUTION OF THE ROLE OF MASS MEDIA IN INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This article provides an expository analysis of the evolution of the role of communication media in enhancing innovations and infrastructural development, especially in the Third World. It examines the evolution of the media from its traditional role of disseminating information to a veritable tool for the achievement of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) in the country.

The media is the reflection of our society and it represents what and how society works. The primary function of the media is to aid in making and keeping people informed. It also helps in entertaining, educating and making people aware of the current happenings around them, this is seen in major news headlines dominating the country today such as the outbreak of coronavirus and acts of insurgency in Nigeria.

However, the role of the media has evolved, thus the media has become the voice of our society (Nity& Gaurav, 2017). Information is necessary and also important to all forms of human activity. No matter the field; there is the need for exchange of information to ensure completion of task.

Where this exchange of information is slow, delayed or cut off totally, difficulties usually arises in achieving efficiency. Hence, information is regarded as vital resources that need to be properly developed, because it has an enormous effect on society.

Consequently, a society that has poor communication and information infrastructure perpetually falls behind others that are exposed to efficient information infrastructure (Moemeka 1985). Thus this study examines the evolution of the role of the media in inducing innovations and infrastructural development by using Harmony FmIdofian, Ilorin, Kwara State as a a case study.

The population of the study comprised of staff of the aforementioned media station as well as other media practitioners in the state, and also citizens of Iilorin town, Kwara State. A sample population of 100 respondents was used for the study. A questionnaire was distributed among the respondents in order to obtain reliable information for the study.

The Pearson Product analytical tool was used to analysed the data obtained. The result revealed that the media has evolves to become a veritable tool for national development in Nigeria. It also revealed that Illiteracy and language barriers are the major restraints limiting the media in inciting development in the country. The study recommended that some programs should be presented in local dialect to enable proper understanding by the audience in order to aid development.

CHAPTER ONE

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

Every nation’s development and growth is not all about the plans that are made but how the plans are revealed to members of the society as their level of participation determines the success of these plans (Okoyi 2007). Nigeria is no different as its plans must be discussed at all stages of formation and implementation to ensure that it is what the people need for their individual and societal development.

The success of any plan depends on the people’s understanding of the development projects (Ibid). Their understanding can only be guaranteed if the necessary information is passed through the medium that members of the society pay attention to.

The concept of using the media as a platform of sharing development related information with others is what is known today as development communication.

Anaeto (2010) sees development communication as an instrument in the development process. It is concerned with the use of communication tools and methodologies to spread knowledge and information to contribute to behaviour change and ultimately development.

Communication tools here refer to the mass media genres of print, broadcast, electronic and of recent the new media. This article looks at what development communication is like in Nigeria, its successes and failures as well as how the technology driven new media can be used as a communication tool for Nigeria’s development.

It is however necessary to delve into the principles of the development media theory propounded by Dennis McQuail in 1987.The principles of the development media given by McQuail (1987) in Anaeto (2010) are as follows:

The media must accept and carry out positive development tasks in line with established

national policy.

Freedom of the media should be open to economic priorities and development needs of

the society.

Media should give priority to news and information that link with other developing

countries which are close geographically, culturally or politically.

Journalists and other media workers have responsibilities as well as freedom in their

information gathering and dissemination tasks.

Since development communication has emerged as a veritable tool for national development, it therefore means that the modern role of the media has encompassed the functions of national development. Mass media are the channels of mass communication through which messages, ideas, thoughts, innovations, initiates and developmental process could be disseminated to a large, dispersed and heterogeneous audience.

Mass media channels such as radio, television, newspaper, satellite, internet books, magazines, billboards, films, recordings have always been part of developmental projects from the medieval time (McQuail 2010). Though the nature and size of these media have witnessed tremendous change and improvement from time to time due to technological advancement which automatically determine their capacity and viability at a particular given period.

In essence, these mass media undoubtedly, have greater roles to play in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Africa.

In todays world, the media as a medium of communication is used for more than just passing on information from one person to another. It is often used as a tool to enhance the participation of people in developmental activities. Such form of communication is known as development communication.

According to Everett Rogers (1994) “Development communication refers to the uses to which communication are put in order to further development.” It can therefore be said that communication is an approach which provides communities with information they can use in bettering their lives.

Development communication has two primary roles, i.e. Transforming role, as it steps social change in the direction of the hygiene taste of today’s generation in this competitive market and a socializing role by seeking to maintain some of the established values of the society. According to Payel (2015), Development communication thus can be said to have two primary roles, i.e.,

(a) transforming role, as it seeks social changes for a higher quality of life.

(b) Socializing role, by seeking to maintain some of the established values of the society.

This paper therefore sought to examine the evolution of the role of the mass media in innovation and infrastructural development in Nigeria.

1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Over the last few years, African media operations has improved significantly. New strategies, laws and regulations have been put in place which has aided the opening up of the airwaves and the uprising of government and private broadcasting services.

In modern parlance, there exist only a handful of African countries where state broadcasting monopolies prevail(Steve, 2013).This changing media communication mode has been seconded by new standards and measures for broadcasting policy, law and regulations which have been approved by African governments and which sets the required standard against which progress can be measured in the development of a liberteranian environment for the media.

Since the government is adopting policies to ensure effective media operations in Nigeria, enormous responsibility shoulders on the part of the media stations to not only provide useful information’s to Nigerians but to also touch lives by introducing innovations and even infrastructural developments in communities where such outlets reside for business.

Since information is an important as well as essential ttool of national development, given the deteriorating nature of Nigerian society, mass media operators become part of the major stakeholders in developing the country.

It is in light of the aforementioned role of the mass media towards national development that this work seeks to evaluate the impact of mass media in developing effective innovation and development in Nigeria with Harmony FM Idofian used as a case study.

1.3 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

Therefore, the following questions will be examined in this study:

What is the trend and pattern of media reporting in Nigeria?

What are the impacts of the mass media in inducing innovations and infrastructural development in Nigeria?

What are the challenges limiting the media in inciting development in Nigeria?

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The broad objective of this study is to examine the impact of mass media in bringing innovation and infrastructural development to society.

However, this broad objective is subdivided into the following specific objectives:

To analyze the trend and pattern of media reporting in Nigeria.

To examine the impact of mass media in inducing innovations and infrastructural development in the

To identify the challenges limiting the role of mass media in inciting development in Nigeria.

1.4 JUSTIFICATION OF THE STUDY

Media for most of us are entangled with almost every aspect of life and work. Understanding media will not only help us to appreciate the role of media in our day-to-day life but also helps us to be a more informed citizen, thus creating a platform for expanding societal development.

Mass media has a political and a persuasive power over us. Radio, TV, the ‘press’ etc. can manipulate whole societies. Political propaganda, advertising and other means of media power are longstanding causes of debate and concern. Media has a great effect on our social behavior which in turn influences the role we play towards societal development or otherwise.

As a result, the media can impact the society negatively as seen in the upspring of terrorist activities constantly aired in media platforms thus bringing to limelight acts of insurgency, which in turns illicits the urge for intending terrorist.

However the media also plays a positive role as seen in the transfer of much needed information on the risk factors and prevention measures of the deathly coronavirus infection presently plaguing the world. This study aims to elucidate the importance of media in impacting the society positively.

1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study focuses exclusively on the impact of mass media in inducing innovations and infrastructural development in Nigera, by using Harmony Idofian FM, Kwara State as a case study. The study appraises the potential of the media in creating a conducive and inspiring atmosphere for general societal development.

The study would also make use of assumptions and postulations of various authors in other parts of the world relating to the subject matter under discussion.

1.6 ASSUMPTION AND LIMITATION OF STUDY

This study is based on the assumption that the selected respondents represent the Population. It is also assumed that the information given by respondents will provide will be truthful, accurate and without bias. The major limitations of the study include: Lack of funds; the research was carried out within the limit of available funds.

As a self sponsored research, it was not possible to generate enough funds to service the project. Hence, the budget project was drawn based on available funds. This has placed significant limitations on the scope of the study.

The research has also been limited by time frame. The available time allotted to the study was too short to explore every avenue connected to the research. The best way to go around the work was to use selected sampling strategy to generalize the survey.

The study also experienced sampling limitation. This study has used a narrow approach to infer a general assumption by exploring specific case study to generalize the context.

In other words, the use of media in its broad sense has been examined and evaluated within the limited parameter of the a selected case study. Using a single case study design has provided a rather narrow perspective of the media.

1.7 OPERATIONAL DEFINITION OF TERMS

Development: The gradual growth of something so that it becomes more advanced or stronger.

Evolution: The gradual development of plants, animals, etc, over many years from simple to complicate forms.

Innovation: The introduction of new things, ideas or ways of doing something.

Infrastructure: The basic systems and services that are necessary for a country or an organization, for example building, transport, power sub.

Mass Media: According to Afamuefuna, it is a technical concept which refers to the devices employed by anyone involved in a mass mediated communication situation for moving messages across distance and time.

Conceptually, the mass media are technological agencies and corporate organization, engaged in the creation, selection, processing and distribution of message that are produced at speeds and in quantities possible only with mass-production methods.

Mass media, therefore are the broadcast common currencies of public interaction in a society. Thus, the mass media are the organized means of reaching large number of diverse kinds of people quickly and efficiently (Pate 2003).

ABSTRACT

These days, many people can be a teacher, but the question is if many people can be an effective teacher. Clearly, to be an effective teacher is more complicated and difficult than many people think.

To be an effective teacher does not only involve having a deep content knowledge, but also organizational, management, and communication skills, being able to organize instructions, and providing relevant assessment and fair evaluations. In addition, an effective teacher is responsible to create a… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

The idea of a good teacher for each individual is variable. Students´ perceptions, opinions, and/or experiences about a good teacher are different. A good teacher has been considered, sometimes, as a perfectionist, encouraging, approachable and caring, other times as intelligent, but above all, as enthusiastic, funny, clever, effective and understanding, open, and with a relaxed style while teaching.

Holt (1964) addressed that learning is enhanced by the teachers´ knowledge, enthusiasm, and responsibility towards creating a warm class climate enhancing “the students desire to learn and to accept the challenges of thinking and inquiring into all that is offered by the teacher”. Stronge et al (2004) stated that teaching is vocational and most good and quality teachers are passionate about their chosen profession.

However, he also added that a good teacher is always in a constant learning process due to changes in terms of the students’ characteristics, the curriculum, the community, and finance among many others… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Statement of the Problem

Good teachers are distinguished by their dedication to the students and to the job of teaching and feel responsible for the achievement and success of the students and own professional development. Good teachers really believe that all students can learn, although all learn differently.

They strive to motivate and engage all their students in learning rather than simply accepting that some students cannot be engaged and are destined to do poorly… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Significance of the Study

The following are the significance of this study:

The result of this study will educate the general public on the qualities of a good teacher and its influence on student performance and behavior.

The findings from this study will form a useful guide for the government and the stakeholders in the education sector on the challenges of the teaching profession with a view of finding a sustainable solution… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Columnist Fransisco (2009 ) in one of his columns talked about the strengthening of teacher education which is initiated by Commissioner Nenalyn Defensor of Commission on Higher Education. Commissioner Defensor emphasized her personal advocacy “Save our Future-Save our Normal Schools”. She identified the nine original normal schools that started as normal schools and are now either integrated with other schools and/or converted into universities.

She enjoined the administrators and deans present to do something to save the normal schools. Teacher Education program is now in state of degradation attributed to poor quality of teachers and therefore the urgent need to strengthen it. Chairman Emmanuel Angeles who delivered the inspirational message reiterated the importance of teacher education in shaping the country and the need to do something to improve the quality of teacher education graduates.

He assured all those present of his full support to strengthen the teacher education program in terms of allocating funds for faculty development, faculty improvement, scholarships, and optimum use of information and communication technology. He exhorted everyone to do much, much more the younger generation if only to prove our love country.

He enjoined everyone present to work together and support the effort of Commissioner Defensor. Various studies and researches have been made in order to identify the factors affecting teacher’s performance and the effect of these teacher’s performance on student’s learning… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Effective Teacher -Professional Skills

Content Knowledge

For many, including teachers, the most obvious requirement to be an effective teacher is the content knowledge of the subject.
Conceptual Framework

The proposed study is guided by Bronfenbrenner’s bio-ecological perspective (2001). This theory suggests that human development across the life span is fueled by the complex inter-relationships among characteristics of people, the contexts they are situated in, the processes that take place within those contexts, and the historical and life-course time in which the development is taking place.

Figure 1 systematically presents the conceptual paradigm of the study. It presents a systematic illustration of how the research study will conduct. The inputs or the independent variables are the ways by which the respondent’s profile is to be analyzed, taking into account their personal attributes and insights on a teacher’s personal and professional qualities.

The process is the strategy to be used such as generating data through the use of questionnaires. The possible output or the dependent variable is the teacher’s performance that will be based on their evaluation.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

In this study, the researchers used the descriptive method of research to know the Personal and Professional Qualities of a teacher and also the perceptions of the students on their teacher’s performance in terms of the following variables: (a.) Commitment, (b.) Knowledge of the subject, (c.) Teaching Strategies and methodologies, and (d.) Management of learning.

Population and Sampling

This study was conducted at the Gboko Local Government Area, Gboko City Academic Year 2014-2015. The respondents of the study are the Teacher Certificate Program (TCP) students of Section A with 25 respondents and Section C with 15 respondents of Gboko Local Government Area ages 21 – 35 years old.

Instrumentation

The researcher used a survey questionnaire and evaluation form to gather information about students’ related factors such as age, gender, and Field of Discipline… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Year-Round Education: Is It Worth the Hassle?

This paper presents findings of a study that examined the impact of year-round education on academic achievement in a large Utah school district. Student-achievement data for years 1990-95 were compared by type of school schedule. A case-study component examined the impact of school schedules used by two elementary schools–one adhered to a traditional calendar and the other followed a multitrack year-round calendar. Data were gathered through interviews with all four administrators and all six fifth-grade teachers and through a survey of 114 fifth-grade students and 123 parents. Multitrack schools appeared to provide a slightly superior educational experience for students in terms of enhancing reading ability as well as in terms of increasing the bottom of the range of scores within a schooi. Parents of both srhool types generally supported their respective school programs and calendars. Student academic performance in multitrack year-round schools over a 6-year period exceeded the performance of students in traditional schocls, while nonacademic outcomes were roughly equal. The findings also identified issues that required more attention–issues of support services, inservice and professional development, staff collaboration and communication, and vacation time. However, administrators believed that these difficulties could be overcome by utilizing different communication strategies, by changing the timing of inservice activities, by extending school activities into the community, or by sponsoring a variety of public events. Some criteria for examining the efficiency of school schedules are suggested. Clarification of the distinctions between those school differences that are conceptual and those that are operational is important. Three tables are included. (Contains 24 references.) It is an advantage as it gives us a forum to debate the whole issue of change. Are we setting ourselves up to always deliver education cheaper? Why are we doing this? YEAR-ROUND EDUCATION: IS IT WORTH THE HASSLE? For approximately 25 years, a number of school districts throughout the United States have experimented with a variety of forms of year-round schooling. By 1992, it was estimated (Mydans, 1991) that 1.3 million students in 23 sta .es were being educated in some adaptation of a year-round model. In Canada, although the topic of year-round schooling has been studied with varying degrees of intensity for most of this century, very few projects have actually been implemented. In 1991, Williams Lake, British Columbia began to implement single-track yearround schooling, followed in 1992 by a few schools and districts in Alberta, with Canada’ first multi-track school, Terry Fox Junior High School, opening in Calgary in July, 1995. In November 1995, the BC Ministry of Education introduced a plan to offer financial incentives to both schools and districts willing to implement what it calls an efficiency schedule for a trial period of five years. Nevertheless, the comments cited at the beginning of this page and numerous others suggest that there is considerable conflict concerning the merits of introducing difference academic calendars into BC schools. rurther, it appears that finding useful material in the available literature requires considerable diligent and careful separation of fact from opinion. It is sometimes difficult to determine the relevance of the literature because there have been few yearround schooling projects in Canada. In addition much of the work which has been done elsewhere lacks clarity concerning the effects of different calendars and accompanying instructional changes, the type of schedule which is being discussed, whether the perceptions being described are based on experience and knowledge, or on impressions and hearsay; especially there has been lack of clarity concerning conceptual as opposed to operational issues. Is it worth the hassle? 3 This paper will present research conducted in Utah (the state with the second highest number of year-round schools) and will attempt to separate many of the issues identified above. In the first phase of the study, which is still ongoing, I have examined student achievement data by school type for a large school district over a six year period to determine the effects of different schedules. I also studied the impact of three different elementary-school schedules (traditional, single-track year-round, and multi-track year-round) by interviewing administrators and fifth grade teachers, and by surveying the fifth grade students and their parents. At present I am enlarging the study to include six Utah schools, six Alberta schools, and whatever BC schools choose to implement an efficiency schedule. Following a brief overview of the relevant literature, the presentation and analysis of the data, the paper will identify, for purposes of further discussion, some possible criteria for the examination of efficiency schedules, some important conceptual issues which need further clarification, and some of the implications of the present study. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE Existing literature identifies six major issues related to school-year organizational practices. Of major concern to policy makers, educators, and the general public is the impact of different organizational arrangements on students in terms of academic learning as well as student attitudes and behaviors. Other issues have been identified related to the impact on educational personnel (administrators, teachers, and district level), the effect on parents and families, on community life, and on facility use. The fiscal implications, costs and benefits, constitute a critical consideration. Finally, the role of policy agencies and governing bodies is raised occasionally. Many studies report that year-round schooling has a positive impact on student grades (Baker, 1990; Bradford, 1993; Peletier, 1991; Perry, 1993). Others find neither positive nor negative impact (Goren & Carriedo, 1986; Haze Iton et al, 1992; Zykowski et al. 1991). In fact, only one study (Quinlan et al. 1987) reported some negative effects on student achievement. However, the complexity of the effects of different calendars on student achievement is frequently Is it wo;-th the hassle? 4 4,1 confounded in the literature. Sometimes there is no indication whether single-track or multi-track arrangements have been studied. Some studies mention that a changed calendar has been accompanied by changes in instructional strategies or curriculum (interdisciplinary or thematic instruction, team teaching, etc.); but, little attention is paid to the nature of the changes or the extent to which a similar change without a new calendar might be associated with similar differences in student achievement. In terms of non-academic effects, in general the research indicates that year-round education is associated with positive student attitudes (Alkin, 1983; Baker, 1990; Gandara. 1992), with improved student attendance (Bradford, 1993; White, 1987), and with reduced vandalism and crime (Brekke, 1983; Merino, 1983). The literature also identifies an increased workload for administrators (Alkin, 1983; Shields & Oberg, 1995), and both positive and negative impacts on teachers (Christie, 1989; Webster & Nyberg, 1992). The situation is similar for parents, although the large majority of parents who have experienced both traditional and year-round calendars support the latter (Alkin, 1983; Zykowski et al, 1991). In fact, many articles focus on pre-implementation concerns -concerns which Shields & Oberg (1995); and others (Alkin, 1983) have found tend not to persist after implementation. Other reports claim “success” or “failure” after only one year of implementation (Baker, 1990; Greenwell et al. 1993), with almost exclusive and inappropriate reliance on student achievement as measured by standardized test scores. Other literature falls under the heading of advocacy, both for (Ballinaer, 1987; Brekke, 1985) and against (British Columbia Teachers Federation, 1994; Kirman, 1991). Finally, the consensus with respect to fiscal costs and benefits is that single-track yearround schools may (but do not have to) cost more than traditional schools; indeed, this is especially related to the type of extra or intercession programs schools may choose to operate Multi-track schools, in contrast, seem to cost more to operate than would the same school on a traditional calendar, but significant costs may accrue to a district in terms of per pupil

Your Sports Research Paper Stand Out With 70 Exciting Topics

Finding the right topic for preparing a research paper may seem like a wild goose chase. Not many students are aware of it, but even deciding on a topic requires them to follow a simple process. Going by that systematic approach will allow you to churn out a stellar topic for your research paper.

Now, for instance, you are instructed by your professor to pick a topic from the area of sports. At this point, the obvious question that many of you may pose is, “what if I’m not a sports enthusiast?” Well, we have also got that covered in this post, as we have curated a list of research paper topics on sports to inspire you.

A systematic approach to choosing a topic

Brainstorm relevant ideas

While pondering over the ideas you need to ensure your focus on the five ‘w’.

Why should you choose the topic?

What intrigues you about it?

What’s your view on the issues connected to the topic?

Who is providing the information on this topic?

Who is affected by the topic?

What are the relevant questions connected to the topic?

Can the topic be debated?

Are there a number of issues and perspectives to consider?

Where is your topic important?

At the international, national or local level?

Is there a specific area affected by the issues discussed in the topic?

When is/was your topic significant? Is it a current situation or a historical phenomenon? Would you want to compare your topic by time periods?

Background information matters

When you are trying to come up with an impactful topic, you have to emphasize on the background details of your preferred areas. The following are some pertinent ways to gather relevant information.

Check the current magazine, journal or newspaper articles on your topic. Ask the librarian of your university if they can assist you with browsing articles on your specific topic of interest. Utilize the resources available on the internet. You will find many scholarly articles and online databases with authentic resources that you can refer to.

Make it manageable

Carrying out research on a topic can quite difficult if it is too narrow or too broad. One way you can narrow down a broad topic is to define a limit for the topic. Some common ways to limit a topic are as follows.

By geographical area By culture By time frame By population group By discipline

Prepare a List of Useful Keywords

Keep track of the words used in describing your topic.

Look for words that best describe your topic Note down the words and use them later when searching the databases and catalogs. Find broader and narrower terms, key concepts, synonyms to widen your search capabilities.

So taking into account these pointers while choosing your topic will ensure that you do complete justice to it.

Preparing a research paper on a specific topic in the domain of sports can be as easy or difficult depending on the topics you choose. So, to save yourself from the whole process of churning out a great topic, you can take inspiration from the topics listed below.

Do You Have New or Fresh Topic? Send Us Your Topic

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

All organizations, both public and private entities rely on some form of communication to send their messages across to their target audience or inform their target audience of the mission and vision of their entity. Employee mostly hypes performance at the workplace when effective communication is at its ultimate.

For instance, when the information about an organization’s policies and procedures are at its optimum level with openness and accuracy; and also when the information provided is adequate, factual, and has good feedback (Kacmar et al., 2003; Neves & Eisenberger, 2012).

Meanwhile, only sizeable modern age organization has placed value on effective workplace way of communicating. It is assumed by some management members that, communication is the simplest task for everyone to execute but research has shown that communication thus makes and unmakes the existence of an organization. In most Organizations, managers often leave that aspect of effective communication to the human resource department as their focus only reaches for the operational activities.

In Nigeria Bottling Company (GRA) for example, the managers only concentrate on target achievement thereby forgetting that free flow of information and how well the staff understands this information dissemination boost their morale to work harder in maximizing revenue. Likewise there becomes a huge problem when managers within organizations always assume that they have had sufficient communication with their staff just by way of instructing them on their daily schedules.

According to Anchor (2009) and Eisenberger & Stinglhamber (2011), two-way communication has a positive impact on workers who perform profitably at work. They form some kind of belief pertaining to their work which intends satisfy the socio-emotional. Relating this to the study done by Eisenberger & Stinglhamber (2011) and Rhoades & Eisenberger (2002), employees are able to determine the organizations’ readiness to appreciate and reward effective and efficient performance by workers… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

Problem Statement

Employee Interaction is a principal and essential endeavor in organizations as stated by Harris & Nelson (2008). They further asserted that the sustainability of an organization is based on effective communication among employees and relationships develop based on effective communication. Working environments differs from all angles as well as their culture, economic and social development.

In this context some of these organizations’ have cumbersome reporting lines, which are difficult for the employee to abide; such as conflicting authorities, and obligations thereby making some subordinates become answerable more than a superior. Intra- communication facilities such as intercoms and memos are mostly ignored by some organization and this deprives subordinates from knowing the vision and mission of an organization.

Considering the problems stated above, the study intends to aid organizations by expounding on the way effective communication would improve organizational performance… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

Research Objectives

The main research objective is to determine the function of successful communication on organizational performance using GRA as a case. However, the specific objectives of the study are below;

To examine the communication systems in GRA.

To measure the performance of employees using GRA appraisal indicators…

LITERATURE REVIEW

Introduction

This chapter reviews the literature on the role of effective communication on organizational performance. It discusses issues on effective communication and organizational performance from different perspectives and with the view of giving a theoretical and empirical foundation to the study. It starts with an exposition on Organizational Communication, followed by Communication Channels, Organizational Communication and Organizational performance, Theoretical and Empirical Foundations on Organizational Communication. The chapter also includes Barriers and Breakdowns in Communication Systems.

Organizational Communication

According to Lindlof and Taylor (2011), ‘organizational communication broadly studies corporate life as constituted through discursive processes such as conflict, teamwork, and leadership’. Internal organizational communication facilitates the flow of information among members of the organization.

The effective flow of information among employees within an organization is facilitated by a vibrant internal communication system. These systems of communication could be upward, downward, vertical or horizontal which is based on the structure of command within an organization…. (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

Patterns of Communication within Organization

Formally, Organizational communication has two dimensions; vertically and horizontally. Vertical communication is a downward and upward form of direction. In other words vertical communication transmits information among different levels in the organizational structure. However, horizontal communication also transmits information among people, divisions, departments and units within the operational structure. This section presents the qualities and roles of different communication flows in an organization.

Downward communication

Downward communication is when messages flow from a higher-level employee to a lower-level employee within an Organization. This arises if information runs down through an Organization’s official succession of the hierarchical structure. In other words, communications start at the upper levels of the Organization and moves through to the bottom levels (Tubbs and Moss, 2008).

The purpose of downward communication is to assign tasks respectively, postulate instructions and directions. It is also aimed to inform employees of job procedures and policies, identification of problems that need attention at the various levels and deliver feedback on employees’ past performance (Robbins et al., 2010)… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

Empirical Theories on Organizational Communication

In the light of this study, there have been many researchers and theorists who have dealt into it and brought about many findings, which are been used in most of the modern organizations as far as effective communication is concerned. Femi (Ph.D.) conducted a study on “Communication as a tool for enhancing Workers’ Performance in Selected Organizations. In Lagos State, Nigeria” he saw communication as an important component of the organization’s project.

This because it was assumed the global world has become widespread that, most organizations petition to meet their needs with a lesser resource moral through communication. His research tests the substantial relationship amid communication and workers’ performance in some designated organizations in Lagos State, Nigeria… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The research design used in this study is descriptive survey, which allows both implicit and explicit hypothesis to be tested. According to Alhassan et al, (2006), descriptive surveys are designed to portray accurately the characteristics of particular individuals, situations or groups.

It is used as a needs assessment tool to provide information on which to base sound decisions and to prepare the background for more constructive programme of educational research. It also serves as a foundation for more vigorous and precise investigation. The data gathered in a survey are usually responses to predetermined questions that are asked of respondents… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)

RESEARCH FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

Introduction

In this chapter, the researcher discusses the results obtained from the analysis of the primary data collected. The analysis of results was conducted according to the study objectives and therefore involved four sections. The first three sections involved some quantitative statistical analysis using descriptive, correlation and regression techniques.

The fourth section, on the other hand, involved a qualitative analysis of an interview schedule conducted and the response rate. Following these sections, the results were then discussed to draw out the central themes and how they compare with previous studies.

Demographic Characteristics of Respondents

Before the data was analyzed in accordance to the study objectives, a demographic characteristic of the data was obtained. From the results, it is realized that the majority of the respondents were males. Specifically, 75% were males while 20% were females.

Most of the respondents (47%) were also between the ages of 40 years and 55 years, 32% were between 26 years and 39 years. Quite a number (14%) were also between 18 years and 25 years… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Project Material)
