Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study.
Corruption, bribery, cheating, stealing, lying, alcoholism, and other social vices have become major issues in recent years, causing great concern in society.

There is hence a need to investigate verifiable methods of interacting with individuals in order to cause them to change for the better by maybe educating them further on the aforementioned social challenges.

Drama appears to be one of the most appropriate and effective methods of delivering crucial information to a large audience. Its reach via radio and radio’s accessibility as a means of communication make it an invaluable instrument. Almost everyone in society can afford to own a radio set. Lasnell (1998).

Derlo (1996) regards drama as an entertainment presentation that depicts how men react to situations and their surroundings. It relies on the activities and actions of the plot’s characters. To elicit human emotions, use an appropriate distribution mechanism.

Drama programmes delight and excite people, but their primary purpose is to educate. The majority of Nigeria’s radio and television stations produce theatrical sketches with occupationally serious themes.

More local play performances with strong social vice messages might be staged and performed by primary and secondary school students. In both rural and urban areas, for example, rephrase the underlined terms.

Their parents and guardians will be showered, attracting a large audience. This is because individuals are more likely to engage in non-serious and entertaining programmes than serious entertaining programmes.

Individual country dramas can be found in natural literature entries such as American literature, French literature, Spanish literature, and so on; there are also distinct articles on English drama and Greek drama, among others.

At the outset of Western drama, the Greeks recognised the complex interaction between actors and audiences and enquired deeply in communication and practice into the meaning of an institution that was the heart of their civic and religious life (Wikandar 2000).

Drama is usually a big part of the Abia State radio station’s broadcast calendar, and it takes many different shapes and names. It is funded by the Society for Family Health, the United States Agency for International Development, the Federal Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Social Welfare, among others.

According to a free online encyclopaedia, Wikipedia drama became widely popular within a decade of its inception in the 1920s. By the 1940s, it was the most popular internal amusement.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Issues such as social vices deserve significant consideration. There is a need to raise awareness about concerns such as corruption and other social vices. This is because the public must be informed and educated about some of these challenges. It follows that ignorance as a problem should be removed by public information.

The challenge, however, is determining the ideal method or approach of communicating critical societal vices to a diverse and large audience at a high rate.

At the same time, as a way of persuading the audience to change their attitudes towards social vices, the question before this study is if drama may be used to eradicate social vices. This is the puzzle that the researcher hopes to solve during the course of this endeavour.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The primary goal of the research is to investigate drama as a weapon for eradicating societal vices. Specific aims are to:

Determine whether drama is both successful and appropriate for the eradication of social vices.

Examine the influence and impact of the message content on the audience through drama.

Find out the finest and most effective ways to reach a large audience on matters of public concern.

Propose a solution or make a recommendation for drama’s issues in reaching its target audience and diverse population.

1.4 Research Questions.

The following research questions could be used to guide the researcher:

Is drama really an effective technique for eradicating societal vices?

 

Do people view drama as a tool for eradicating societal vices?

Has the theatrical programme had an impact on social vices?

Has the theatrical programme achieved its intended goal?

1.5 Significance of the Study

This research is significant in a variety of ways. It is envisaged that the study’s findings would be extremely beneficial and valuable to decision-makers and communication planners since they will provide a foundation for curriculum creation that will use theatre analysis as a tool for eradicating social vices.

It is envisaged that some of the findings would be used in policy creation by both state and federal ministries of communication and radio.

The findings of this study are expected to be a beneficial and useful guide for future studies in the field of mass communication and other related fields.

1.6 Scope of Study

The study focuses on radio drama as a strategy for eradicating social vices in the Abia State Broadcasting Corporation. The theatrical programmes covered include “One Thing at a Time,” “Story, Story,” and “Flavour.” The editions examined were those played during the first half of 2016.

1.7 Limitations of Study

There are drawbacks to studying in one method or another. Time was a constraint; the time allotted for the research was insufficient, as the researcher had other academic responsibilities to attend to in addition to producing this paper.

Furthermore, because to the country’s current economic problems, the researcher found it impossible to expand the research to any order radio house.

Most crucially, the researcher was limited in his or her ability to investigate numerous variables due to funding constraints. Another problem was respondents’ refusal to complete the research instrument.

1.8 Definition of Terms

Drama is an entertainment presentation that depicts how people react to their surroundings. It combines the activities and actions of characters in the plot, as well as proper language of delivery, to elicit human emotions.

Programmes: This is a lineup of events or shows broadcasting on television or radio on a specific day.
