INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF KWARA STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN NIGERIA
Abstract
Today, information is viewed as a highly stressed factor that shapes society, especially with the introduction of social media technology. As a result, the purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of social media usage on the information behavior of undergraduate students at selected universities in Kwara State, Nigeria. For this study, five (5) research objectives were developed.
The descriptive survey research design was used in the study. This study’s population included undergraduate students from Al-Hikmah University, Kwara State University, and the University of Ilorin. The Israel (2003) sample size model was used to calculate the sample size with precision levels of 5% and confidence levels of 95%, and the recommended sample size was 385. (385).
The sample was drawn from the population using a simple random sampling technique. The questionnaire, which was self-created, was divided into five sections. The content-related approach to validation was used to ensure the instrument’s validity, while Cronbach alpha was used to test the instrument’s reliability, and the overall reliability coefficient of the instrument is r= 0.679.
The collected questionnaire copies were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 21.0. The data for the research objectives were presented using frequency counts and a percentage table. According to the study’s findings, Facebook is the most popular social media tool among undergraduate students. The findings also revealed that undergraduate students use social media extensively.
The findings also revealed that the primary reasons for undergraduate students using social media are to connect with friends and for academic activities. However, the findings show that there is a significant relationship between the purpose of using social media and undergraduate students’ information behavior.
Because the benefits of using social media cannot be overstated, among the numerous recommendations based on the findings, the study recommended that university administration ensure that social media applications are integrated into their learning and teaching system.
