INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background for the Study

Every organization’s primary goal is to boost production, which is decided by the workforce’s talents and competencies. Manpower refers to the entire number of available workers in an organisation. Manpower plays a critical part in all businesses and companies.

Manpower is the foundation of all resources employed, and it is the only method of converting other resources to mankind’s use and advantage, therefore how well we develop and employ human resource abilities is critical in determining how much an organisation will accomplish.

Manpower development and utilisation are critical to every organisation, since they are expected to provide optimal performance of workers allocated jobs in an efficient and effective manner.

Adeniyi (1995) defines manpower or staff training and development as a vital work activity that has a major impact on an organization’s overall effectiveness and profitability. According to Fajana (2002), the individuals who establish and work inside an organisation determine its efficacy and success.

According to Saraswathi (2010), personnel development in the organisational context is a process by which employees of an organisation are assisted in acquiring or sharpening competencies required to perform specific jobs in a continual, organised manner.

There is no doubt that in this advanced age of development and technical advancement, manpower must be trained to match the demands of modern technology. The Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) relies heavily on well-trained and developed personnel to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.

To back up this claim, Ojohwoh (2011) asserts that manpower is essential in any enterprise, whether it is industrial, commercial, or educational. According to Onah (2014), the most successful organisations distinguish themselves by how they manage human resources.

Personnel training will always play a role, as many businesses have realised that it is the only way to improve efficiency and ensure work standards.

Equipment is extremely crucial in any organisation. The value of transmitting equipment cannot be overstated. Broadcast equipment can meet the ever-increasing demand for better techniques of data collection, data editing, and information dissemination to the target market.

 

The growth of personnel is unquestionably critical to Nigeria’s socioeconomic and political progress. Manpower development is critical in the broadcasting sector, particularly at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). NTA operates Nigeria’s largest television network, with stations located throughout the country.

Nigeria’s first television station, the Western Nigerian Government airing Corporation (WNTV), began airing on October 31, 1959, with Olapade Obisesan as chairman and Vincent Maduka as general manager. In 1962, the three regional governments established the Nigerian Television Service (NTS).

Then, with the formation of twelve states in Nigeria, more television services were established, and by 1976, when all televisions were taken over by the federal government under Decree 24 of 1977

the NTA was established as the sole entity responsible for television broadcasting in Nigeria, with ten stations. In 1979, NTA had reached around 20% of Nigeria’s population; by 1999, it had reached 30 stations. Today, NTA has 101 stations, making it Africa’s largest network.

NTA’s objective is to become a world-class television network. Its objective is to provide high-quality television services around the world while also projecting authentic African perspectives.

The NTA’s business objectives are to influence, promote, sustain, and improve Nigeria’s positive societal values through social, cultural, economic, political, and technological activities.

To give viewers with the most trustworthy, authoritative, and impartial coverage and analysis of current national and international topics through news broadcasts, as well as to encourage civic obligations.

Its basic values include national interest, professionalism, correctness, integrity, balance and objectivity, sensitivity, and a dedication to global peace and prosperity.
