EFFECT OF SUGAR ON BEAN PLANT GROWTH ABSTRACT This project was to determine if bean plants grew stronger and healthier […]

EFFECT OF SUGAR ON BEAN PLANT GROWTH

ABSTRACT

This project was to determine if bean plants grew stronger and healthier by the addition of the right amount of sugar to their watering. It is believed that plants that receive 50 grams of sugar per liter of water would help bean plants grow to be stronger, healthier, and larger because they would get energy from the sugar. In order to investigate the effects of different irrigation regimes on growth and grain yield of three faba bean cultivars, a split-plot experiment (using RCB design) with three replications was conducted in Ahmadu Bello University.

Irrigation regimes (I1, I2 and I3: irrigation after 70, 100 and 130 mm evaporation from Class A pan, respectively) and faba bean cultivars (Aquodolce, Barakat and Saraziri) were allocated to main and subplots, respectively. The results of plant growth analysis on the basis of growing degree-days (GDD) revealed that dry matter accumulation (DMA), crop growth rate (CGR) and relative growth rate (RGR) were reduced due to water deficit. Water limitation also reduced grains per plant, grain filling duration and grain weight… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Sugar water stress affects practically every aspect of plant growth and metabolism. Plant responses to sugar water deficit depend upon various factors such as duration and degree of stress, growth stage, and time of stress exposure (Gupta and Sheoran, 1983). Due to their sedentary mode of life, plants resort to many adaptive strategies in response to different abiotic stresses such as high salt, dehydration, cold, and heat, which ultimately affect plant growth and productivity (Gill et al., 2003).

Against these stresses, plants adapt themselves by different mechanisms including change in morphological and developmental patterns as well as physiological and biochemical responses (Bohnert et al., 1995). Adaptation to all these stresses is associated with metabolic adjustments that lead to the modulation of different enzymes (Shinozaki and Shinozaki, 1996; Yan et al., 2001; Ehsanpour and Amini, 2003).

Among these enzymes are phosphatases, which are believed to be important for many physiological processes, including regulation of soluble phosphorous (Pi) (Yan et al., 2001). Phosphatases are traditionally classified as being acid and alkaline depending on their optimum pH for enzyme activity, above and below pH 7.0 (Barret-Lennard et al., 1982).

Free soluble phosphate reserves play a vital role in energy transfer, metabolic regulation, important structural constituent of biomolecules like phytin bodies in the ingeminated seeds, protein and nucleotide phosphorylation (Fincher 1989; Ehsanpour and Amini, 2003).

Although some abiotic stresses like salt, osmotic and sugar water have been reported to increase phosphatase activities by maintaining a certain level of inorganic phosphate in plant cells (Olmos and Hellin, 1997), the exact role of phosphatases in the germinated seeds is still not clear, because the metabolism of these compounds can be affected by a number of environmental factors such as stress type, irradiance, temperature, and type of ions present (Bohnert et al., 1995).

Germination of grains is initiated by sugar water uptake and its successful completion is signaled by the emergence of the developing root and shoots. Following uptake of water, hormone signals, probably released from the emergence, are believed to result in the synthesis of hydrolytic and other enzymes in the endosperm (Fincher, 1989) … (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Statement of Problem

The vital needs of a plant are very much like our own – light, water, air, nutrients, and proper temperature. The relative importance of each of these needs differs widely among plants. The ability of a plant species to spread throughout a geographic area is a direct result of its adaption to the abiotic and biotic components of the area.

Although most habitat components act on a plant simultaneously and should be considered together, the lack of one essential component can determine the health of a plant. This factor, whatever it may be, is referred to as a limiting factor. The concept of limiting factors applies to all aspects of a plant’s interaction with its habitat. Any factor in the ecosystem can act as a limiting factor… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Research Objective

The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of sugar on bean plant growth.

LITERATURE REVIEW

Bean Plant

A bean is the seed of one of several genera of the flowering plant family Fabaceae, which are used as vegetables for human or animal food. [1]They can be cooked in many different ways,[2] including boiling, frying, and baking, and are used in several traditional dishes throughout the world.

The word “bean” and its Germanic cognates (e.g. German Bohne) have existed in common use in West Germanic languages since before the 12th century,[3] referring to broad beans, chickpeas, and other pod-borne seeds. This was long before the New World genus Phaseolus was known in Europe. After Columbian-era contact between Europe and the Americas, use of the word was extended to pod-borne seeds of Phaseolus, such as the common bean and the runner bean, and the related genus Vigna.

The term has long been applied generally to many other seeds of similar form,[3][4] such as Old World soybeans, peas, other vetches, and lupins, and even to those with slighter resemblances, such as coffee beans, vanilla beans, castor beans, and cocoa beans. Thus the term “bean” in general usage can refer to a host of different species.[5]… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Materials

This research was conducted in 2007 at the Research Farm of the Ahmadu Bello University. The climate of the research area is characterized by mean annual precipitation of 285 mm, mean annual temperature of 10°C, mean annual maximum temperature of 16.6 °C and mean annual minimum temperature of 4.2°C. The soil is sandy- loam with EC of 0.68 ds m-1, pH of 8.1, and field capacity of 28.8%.

Methods

The experiment was arranged as split-plot based on RCB design with 3 replications. Irrigation treatments (I1, I2, and I3: irrigation after 70, 100, and 130 mm evaporation from Class A pan, respectively) were located in main plots and faba bean cultivars (Aquodolce, Barakat, and Saraziri) were allocated to subplots.

The seeds were treated with 2 g/kg sugar water and then were sown by hand at a rate of 40 seeds/m2 in about 5 cm depth of soil. Subsequently, plots were fertilized with 150 kg/ha urea and irrigated. However, further irrigations were carried out according to the treatments… (Click the Link Below For the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

RESEARCH FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

Findings

Dry matter accumulation (DMA) of faba bean cultivars under all irrigation treatments at the earlier stages of growth was slow, but then increased rapidly up to about 1400 GDD and thereafter slightly changed or in some cases showed a little reduction (Fig. 1). Sugar water deficit negatively affected DMA of all cultivars. In general, dry matter production in all cultivars considerably reduced, as the intensity of sugar water shortage increased. ‘Barakat’ had the highest DMA under all irrigation treatments, compared with ‘Aquodolce’ and ‘Saraziri’.

Crop growth rate (CGR) of faba bean cultivars under full (I1) and limited (I and I) irrigations primarily increased, until maximum value was attained and then gradually decreased, with increasing GDD (Fig. 2). Maximum CGR of all cultivars under I1 and I2 was obtained at about 1146 GDD, but under I3 it was achieved at 928 GDD for ‘Aquodolce’ and ‘Barakat’ and at 1287 GDD for ‘Saraziri’. CGR of faba bean plants was subsequently reduced and in most cases it became negative at 1420-1610 GDD, depending on the cultivar (Fig. 2)… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

(Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Discussion

Legume plants with relatively high sugar water requirements are very sensitive to periodical soil drought since low rainfall during the vegetation season is one of the most important environmental factors limiting the crop yield 25.

Since there is a certain correlation between dry matter production and grain yield in faba bean crop, it appears that the maintenance of adequate levels of sugar water throughout the vegetative growth of faba bean is essential for high yields 31.

In this research, sugar water shortage exerted a large adverse influence on DMA, CGR and RGR of faba bean cultivars grown under field condition (Figs. 1-3)… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

CONCLUSION

Sugar water limitation considerably reduced grain yield of faba bean cultivars, due to large reductions in growth, grain filling duration, grain weight and grains per plant. The superiority of well-watered (I1) plants in growth and grain filling duration resulted in the production of comparatively more and larger grains and consequently higher grain yield per unit area… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

EXAMINE THE ROLE OF FINANCIAL INSTITUTION IN AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO NIGERIA AGRICULTURAL AND CO-OPERATIVE BANK ENUGU

ABSTRACT

This project is an attempt to examine the role of a financial institution in agricultural development in Nigeria with particular reference to Nigeria’s agricultural and cooperative bank Enugu. And to suggest ways by which they can be of better use to the nations. The project also made a desperate attempt to get a view of some farmers. Chapter one consists of the general introduction of the research topic, the statement of problems, the purpose of the research, and the methodology… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

INTRODUCTION

Background

Agricultural is one of the most important sectors of our country’s economy. Enugu state is no exception. Enugu state is characterized by low farm incomes, primitive farming techniques which lower the level of production, and low level of capacity to satisfy the food and fiber need of the nation.

Infant agriculture is in part-type peasant agriculture which has been mentioned by many writers as caught in a vicious circle of property low income resulting in poor savings and little investment because technology is poor, the output is always low and income yield is low. Generally, agriculture in Nigeria is caught as a low-level equilibrium trap. The nature of technology is used always affects the rate of return; i.e. the rate of return cannot rise because of poor technology in use. This also a result of poor financing, such agriculture has been described as efficient but poor.

In order to alleviate the numerous problems being encountered by farmers and the economic loss suffered by both individual farmers and government in the international and local trade transactions, then government decided to finance most of the agricultural projects limited by individual farmers, co-operatives, and institutions… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Statement of the Problem

Many developing countries of the world have very few financial facilities, considering the evolution of the financial market in Asia, Latin America, and Africa countries, it was asserted that new financial facilities are very much needed to extend financial help especially in Nigeria. In supporting this assertion, it was contended that at a certain stage in agricultural development.

Agricultural credit clearly does become a strong force for further improvement, when a man with energy and initiative who lacks only the resources for more and efficient production is enabled by the use of credit to eliminate the block on his path to improvement.

Within the two capital markets (institutional and non-institutional) available to rural producers, the informal sources are the most extensive supplier of credit Nigeria yet these sources have not supplied the amount of credit enough in terms of the requirement by farmers to modernize their farming methods… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Significance of the Study

The agricultural sector of the Nigerian economy like any other sector of the economy cannot function without fund. Unlike the other sectors of the economy, the agricultural sector can guarantee repayment of loan borrowed or collected only after a long period of time. This is because of the slow nature of the production process.

However, this has acted as a hindering factor for giving out loans to the agricultural sector by financial institutions. If this continues in its current path, the continuous lack of fund would lead to the eventual collapse of agricultural activities… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

LITERATURE REVIEW

Theoretical background

There are many problems operating against the development of agriculture in Nigeria. The most serious of these problems is the inadequacy of credit facilities. This has caused a lot of setbacks to the development of this sector of the Nigerian economy. Several banks have been encouraged by the federal government to give out loans to needy farmers to boost agricultural production in the country. The effect of agricultural production in relation to bank credit is a master of great value based on the effect an unhealthy agricultural environment has on a country.

These can be seen from such angles which include; Starvation, poverty, unemployment, poor economic growth, over-dependence on other countries, and many more. According to Uchegwu (1995:10),” in trying to solve this problem and encourage the bank to meet the prescribed credit target, the federal government established by decree no. 20 of 1977, the agricultural credit guarantee scheme fund (ACGSF) managed by the central bank of Nigeria”… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Agricultural Credit Policies

These are policies set up or made by the government at different levels in a bid to increase agricultural output. According to Uchegwu O. (1995), the various governments intensified their effort towards maximizing agricultural production during the first half of 1977. In order to induce banks to increase loans and advances to agriculture, the federal government and central bank established an agricultural credit guarantee scheme fund designed to guarantee loans given by any bank to farmers and cooperate institutions for agricultural purposes… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Features of the Agricultural Credit Guarantee Scheme

Loans given out order ACGS are done at concessionary interest rates. The guarantee is backed by an authorized fund of a 100 million naira to be subscribed to by the federal government and the central bank of Nigeria in the proportion of 60% and 40% respectively. The fund is under the management of the ACGS. The Fund board works with the central bank as the managing agent for its day-to-day administration. The agricultural purposes of which loans can be guarantee by the fund are:-

The cultivation and production of cereal crops, tubers, fruits of all kinds, cotton, beans, groundnut, bananas plantain, and pineapples.

The establishment or management of plantation for the production of rubber, oil palm, cocoa, coffee, tea and similar crops, animal husbandry, pig and cattle rearing, fish farming depending on the magnitude of the loan… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

The Role of Parastatals in the Development of Agriculture in Nigeria

The federal government has also set up various parastatals to aid the development of agriculture in Nigeria by decentralizing their roles and status. Such parastatals include:-

National Accelerated Food Production Project (NAFPP):

NAFPP was based on the green revolution concepts and experiences of Mexico, India, the Philippines, and Pakistan. It was established in the year 1973.

The project had 3 components namely:

Research

Extension

Agro services

Its main objectives were the acceleration of the production of six major food crops, namely rice, millet, sorghum, maize, meats, and cassava. However, this program failed due to inadequate commitment by some states, inadequate public, and poor infrastructural facilities… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Extension Research and Rural Development Strategies in Aid of Agricultural Development in Nigeria Extension

According to Yomere G.O and Agbonifoh B.A (1999), this is a service that assists the farmers through educational producers in improving their farming techniques thereby increasing their production efficiency income as well as improving their standard of living.

It helps rural farmers solve their problems through the application of scientific knowledge in a voluntary program. The aim of agricultural extension is to teach rural people how to raise their own resources. It encourages progressive growth through local leadership, civic pride, and self-help.

The scope of extension is very broad. It is not a mere matter of giving the farmers knowledge from research and technology to help raise efficiency, but it helps them learn about changes, the reasons for it and the uncertainties inherent in the change… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

The survey method shall be adopted for this study. This method focuses on the framework for controlling data collection. The main objective of the survey method is to ensure the accuracy of information. The use of questionnaires for data collection will be adopted.

Population of the Study

The population of this study includes farmers, which could include larger scale and small-scale farmers, financial institutions that provide credit facilities for the farmers, and the Nigerian Agricultural And Co-Operative bank… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

RESEARCH FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

The analysis of data collected from respondents would be dealt with here. A total of 200 questionnaires were administered to 200 farmers comprising large-scale farmers and small scale farmers and small-scale farmers. Of the 200 questionnaires administered, 188 were dully completed and collected, thus representing a 94% return rate while 12 questionnaires were not returned representing 6%.

SUMMARY OF FINDING, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATION

Summary of Findings

In the course of the study, we discovered that over the years there has been a steady decline in banks investment in agriculture especially by our indigenous banks, this is attributed to the risk involved in the trade of agriculture ranging from weather conditions to divergences of funds and hence low recovery rate of finances which affects the banks’ willingness to assist. There was also the discovery that there were no enough loan officers or staff willing to supervise and follow up the farmers to monitor the use of funds for the farm operations.

The inadequacy of financial institutions to cater to the needs of farmers is yet another problem of the agricultural sector; coupled with this is the problem of collateral security demanded by banks. High-interest rates are also another factor that pushes the farmers from even considering a bank loan and so food production remains on the small-scale level. In cases where farmers take the loans they find it difficult to pay back over the years, interest rates have been between 15-30%, which the farmers say is high… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Conclusion

The role of agriculture in the development of the country is an enormous one. Agriculture is not only important for food production and for the production of raw materials of different sectors examples of which are clothing, pharmaceutical, furniture, etc but also serves as foreign exchange earners for the country.

In Nigeria Agriculture has not been able to attain its full objectives and improper funding has been identified as its major problem. It is known that the effective contribution of agricultural lies increasing the hectares under the farmers’ management, will reduce the unit cost of product and the total cost of credit administration and also bring about improved farm management and facilitate the adoption of improved technologies in agriculture. This can be facilitated if the banks could enhance the greater flow of funds to agriculture… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

Recommendations

In regard to the discoveries made above, the following recommendations are put forward:

Loan increase

It is advisable to increase the number of loans given to farmers to assist them adequately considering the fact that increased input generally yields an increase in output. Banks and other formal credit institutions should de- emphasized the possession of securities and collateral before loans are given. The social rating of individual credit worthiness measured by guarantors should be used to guarantee the repayment of the loan.

Qualified Staff

This suggestion stresses the need for qualified and skilled staff to assess, follow up, and monitor the farmer and the investment loan is given so as to help him pay back and make some profit.

Bank and other formal credit institution should make it easier for the farmers to get loans without undergoing long processes which are usually involved in securing loans from their institution. Loans supervision should also be carried out to make sure loans are not used for another purpose… (Scroll down for the link to get the Complete Chapter One to Five Project Material)

How to Select the Right Topic for Your Research Project Choosing the right research topic isn’t just the first step […]

How to Select the Right Topic for Your Research Project

Choosing the right research topic isn’t just the first step of your project—it’s the foundation on which everything else is built. According to a study by Elsevier, over 50% of researchers report spending more time refining their topic than expected, with many struggling to align their interests with practical objectives. Why? Because it’s not just about picking something that interests you; it’s about finding a balance between passion, relevance, and feasibility.

Albert Einstein famously said, “If I had an hour to solve a problem, I’d spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem and 5 minutes thinking about solutions.” That’s precisely how you should approach topic selection—invest the time to get it right. Your topic sets the tone for your entire project, from the scope of your research to the way your results are received.

But here’s the tricky part: how do you pick a topic that ticks all the boxes? One that is relevant, original, and actually achievable within your time frame? That’s where this guide comes in. We’ll break down actionable strategies to help you identify, evaluate, and refine your research topic so you don’t just end up with a good idea—you end up with the right idea.

The significance of creating an outstanding thesis can cause students to feel a tremendous and overwhelming burden hovering over their minds as time goes by; but, following a few key steps, selecting the correct research subjects can be quick, simple, and even enjoyable. This post provides an insight on how to select the perfect study ideas in only five simple stages and without any worry.

How to Choose the Right Topic for your Project

An excellent research topic will have an available and controllable corpus of relevant studies. Choosing a topic with these features at the start of the research phase will save you time in the long run. Choosing a study topic that is intriguing, applicable, practicable, and worthwhile of your time might take a lot of time, so be ready to put in the work. Analyze the possibilities, conduct some general introduction on each one, and then choose a suitable topic to avoid many of the hassles that come with researching a topic that isn’t suited for whatever circumstances.

Step 1: Make a list of potential research topics.

The most straightforward step is to hold a planning session to determine the ideal topic for you. It’s nice to find something that fascinates you, but don’t be scared to stretch yourself a little. Take a look at what’s happening around the world and see if something piques your interest. Make a broad list of options and start narrowing down your options.

Step 2: Topic Selection

The second step is choosing a topic that may seem simplistic, but it is critical to get this step right if you want the remainder of the approach to go smoothly. Students frequently make the error of becoming too particular early on; yet, choosing the correct topic is a logical deduction. The goal of beginning with a definite proposal would be to save energy, but the longer you stay, getting there will benefit you throughout the rest of the work, so do not rush it. Begin by selecting a subject area; the broader the topic, the preferable. So, if you want to write about a multidimensional topic like management, go for it! The subsequent phases will help you cement your concept and get closer to that final draft.

Step 3: Be Specific

After you have decided on a vast topic, the subsequent phase is to narrow it down. This will assist you in determining whether or not your subject has enough depth to warrant further investigation. Do not panic if this stage takes a while and you discover yourself losing your mind about the topic; after you have nailed this phase, the remainder will be simple. The aim is to start with a broad concept and then narrow it down to a specific aspect of that subject. Then you must take that component and refine it even further. Make your topic precise by making it about management concepts, for instance, if your theme is about management. Then narrow it down even more by focusing on the impact and influence of management concepts such as strategy and competitiveness in specific areas; this is how you construct a distinctive and fascinating thesis.

Step 4: Make a problem out of your topic

It would help if you now created a question that will aid you with the topic of your work after you have a definite topic. So, if your chosen topic is “Competitive Strategies and Firms Performance”, then raise specific questions such as how does competitive strategies influence firm performance? What are the dimensions of competitive strategies that would affect performance?

Step 5: Do more research on your topic and make an outline

You effectively have a thesis worth writing at this point; all you have to do is conduct an in-depth investigation on the particular subjects of your thesis and build an overview of whatever you want to convey. You are now prepared to start by writing a two-sentence response to your selected topic question. The most challenging part is over; you now have your research question in simply five steps. All you have to do now is write it! Make a list of what you want your research paper to say, how you want to express it, and how you want it to be seen as the first step.

Make a list of your objectives and goals and a timeframe for how and when you would like to reach them, but before you do so, remember to follow the five stages outlined above.

Conclusion

Selecting the right topic for your research project is not just an academic exercise—it’s the cornerstone of your success. A well-chosen topic doesn’t just make your research process smoother; it ensures your work stands out, holds relevance, and contributes meaningfully to your field. As we’ve explored, the best topics are born from a mix of curiosity, practicality, and strategic thinking.

Remember: start by identifying your interests, then narrow your focus to something specific and actionable. Evaluate the feasibility of your idea, ensuring it aligns with your available time, resources, and skills. Seek feedback early and often, refining your topic based on input from peers, mentors, or your target audience. And above all, stay flexible—your initial idea may evolve as you dig deeper, and that’s okay.

As Einstein’s approach reminds us, investing time in carefully thinking about the problem—your topic—is time well spent. A strong foundation will guide your research, keep you motivated, and ultimately lead to a project you’re proud of.

So, as you embark on this journey, approach the process with confidence and curiosity. Be bold enough to explore new ideas but practical enough to stay grounded. Your research has the potential to make an impact. And it all starts with choosing the right topic.

Now, it’s time to take that first step. What will your research contribute to the world? The answer lies in the topic you choose—so make it count!

ABSTRACT

The effects of public expenditure on Nigeria’s agriculture industry are the subject of this research. In agriculture, natural food webs are simplified and energy is redirected for human planting and animal consumption. To what degree has government spending contributed to the growth of Nigeria’s agriculture industry was the overarching goal of this research. From 1986 to 2017, the statistics were taken from the CBN statistical bulletin. The study was directed by two research questions. Multiple linear regression was used to analyse the gathered data. Government spending in Nigeria boosted the agriculture industry, which in turn boosted the country’s economy, according to the results. The results led to the recommendation that the government of Nigeria enhance the value of its agricultural sector transactions and establish solid regulatory guidelines to assist farmers improve their production capacity, both of which would contribute to the growth of the economy.

Agriculture, governance, economics, expansion.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the study

Because it provided sustenance and income for a large portion of the population before the oil boom of the 1970s, agriculture played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s economic growth. Since agriculture was the mainstay of economic development in the first decade after independence, Nigeria’s economy may be characterised as agricultural [Ogen, 2003]. Up until the 1980s, when oil deposits were first exploited, agriculture constituted the backbone of Nigeria’s economy. The practice of cultivating crops and livestock for human use is known as agriculture, according to Akinboyo [2008]. What we’re seeing here is the redirection of energy from natural food webs to our own agriculture and animal consumption. To say that agricultural advancement is crucial to a nation’s progress and prosperity would be an understatement. The agricultural sector has been crucial to Nigeria’s economic success.

Considering the agriculture sector’s job possibilities and financial repercussions, its contribution to any economy is immeasurable. Nigeria is able to cultivate a diverse array of food and income crops due to its very variable environment. Since many Nigerians relied on agriculture for both subsistence and income, the sector played a crucial role in the country’s economic growth.

According to Muftau and Gafar (2003) and Aina (2015), over 80% of Nigeria’s rural population was involved in agriculture in the 1960s. From 1963 to 1964, the agricultural sector contributed up to 65% of the nation’s GDP. Despite the fact that most small-holder farmers in Nigeria do not have access to inputs that would boost their production, Nigeria was the world’s leading exporter of kernel and palm oil during this time, and the second-largest producer of cocoa overall [Ogen, 2003]. Credit facilities and fertilisers are inaccessible to farmers in rural areas.

Massive importation of basic foodstuffs has replaced agriculture’s dormant role in the economy over the last two or three decades, which is a direct result of the agricultural sector’s inability to fulfil its responsibility of food production [Egbuna, 2003]. The government’s spending, the backbone of agricultural funding, has been steadily falling. In 2008, researchers from the International Food Policy and Research Institute (IFPRI) and the World Bank worked together to find out that public spending on agriculture in Nigeria amounts to less than 2% of the overall federal budget. The government has recognised this and has implemented a number of programs and policies to help the sector thrive so that it can keep fulfilling its functions.

Starting in 1975, the government made the decision to actively engage in the commercial cultivation of food crops in an effort to rectify this anomaly. To help direct oil revenues into the country’s agricultural sector, the government of Nigeria set up the Nigerian Agricultural and Corporative Bank (NACB) in 1973 [Olagunju, 2000]. In an attempt to revive agricultural performance, a number of development programs were also implemented. Despite these and large financial investments, agricultural production remains dismally low [Ojo, 1991].

Productivity has remained stagnant despite the implementation of many agricultural programs, such as the Agricultural Credit Support Scheme of 2006 and the FADAMA Development Programmes (Oriola, 2009). For example, Nigeria continues to spend a substantial amount on rice imports, even though FADAMA Rice initiatives have received a substantial amount of funding.

Agricultural output averaged 32% of GDP from 1996–2000 and 42% from 2001–2009, despite low investment levels (CBN, 2010). Although it received only one percent of all commercial bank loans in 2011, the country’s GDP was forty percent attributable to agriculture, according to the CBN governor (People’s Daily, 2011). Agricultural production is vital in Nigeria, even if the country’s oil industry has an envied position.

1.2 Problem Statement

Despite Nigeria’s abundant natural resources, the agriculture sector’s impact on the economy has been shrinking for some time. This abrupt shift occurred in the early 1970s, when crude oil revenues skyrocketed. Agricultural production in Nigeria is still sluggish and undeveloped compared to the country’s rapidly expanding population, and this is mostly attributable to a lack of investment from both the public and private sectors. As a result, the sector’s productivity has taken a hit, and it has been unable to fulfil its historic function of producing food, among other things.

Increasing agricultural production is hindered by insufficient investment for the industry. According to FAO (2008), between 1970 and 1980, an average of 4.74 percent of Nigeria’s capital was allocated to agriculture. While it did improve to 7% from 1980–2000 and 10% from 2001–2007, it is still not enough to meet the guideline of the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), which is that 25% of the government capital budget should be allocated to agricultural development.

The purpose of this research is to ascertain the extent to which public funds in Nigeria have boosted agricultural output.

1.3 Research Questions

The following research questions will form the basis of this study:

How does the Nigerian government’s spending affect the country’s agriculture sector?

How will the expansion of Nigeria’s agriculture industry affect the country’s GDP?

1.4. Research Objectives

The overarching goal of this research is to examine the relationship between Nigerian government spending and agricultural production. The following particular goals will be considered in order to accomplish this overarching purpose.

To find out how the Nigerian government’s spending has affected the country’s agriculture industry.

To analyse the effects on the Nigerian economy of the expansion of the agricultural sector.

1.5 Postulates for Future Study

Agricultural production is unaffected by government spending (H0).

Hypothesis 1: Government spending greatly affects the agriculture sector

The expansion of Nigeria’s agricultural industry does not significantly affect the country’s

financial system

Hypothesis 1: The expansion of Nigeria’s agricultural sector greatly affects

financial system

1.6 Significance of the study

Because it will aid in the formulation of economic policy in Nigeria, this research is going to be crucial for both private investors and the government. One of the goals of this investigation is to have a bird’s-eye picture of how the agriculture industry functions. It will add to the current body of knowledge by conducting an empirical investigation on the impact of the agriculture sector on national development. Beneficiaries of this research include;

Researchers and Scholars: This study will be useful for researchers and scholars in the academic community as it will provide a foundation for future studies and serve as a reference for existing literature.

The government should use these insights to formulate and execute policies that would guarantee growth.

Investors: Additionally, investors will find this research important since it will help them make informed judgements about their private investments.

1.7 Scope/Limitations of the study

The purpose of this study is to analyse how the Nigerian government’s spending habits have affected the country’s agriculture industry. The years 1986–2017 were included in the research.

1.8: Study Structure

The research is organised into five sections. First, there is the introduction, which includes things like the study’s rationale, a problem statement, research questions, hypotheses, study goals, study significance, study constraints, scope, and methodology. The literature review, which includes conceptual, theoretical, empirical, theoretical framework, and gaps in literature, is discussed in Chapter 2. Data analysis methodologies, data kinds and sources, estimating methods, and model specifications are all covered in Chapter 3 of the study approach.Presentation and analysis of outcomes comprises the fourth chapter and includes presenting the results, interpreting the data, and summarising the main findings. The summary, conclusion, and suggestions are presented in Chapter 5.

NON INSTITUTIONAL SOURCES OF FARM CREDITS: PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS (A CASE STUDY OF MAKURDI LOCAL AREA OF BENUE STATE)

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Agriculture, which is the cultivation of crops and rearing of livestock for the satisfaction of human needs, is the most important sector towards the development of any nation [CBN, 2013]. The greatest avenue for employment, income and food for Nigerian populace (general public) is through Agriculture.

The agricultural sector has been an important component of the Nigerian economy with peasant farmers producing over 90% of available food in the country and 70% of the labor force relying on these sectors [Amao et al, 2013].

The Agriculture sector lies in the hands of small scale farmers, whose expansion in terms of provision of scale of production is low due to low inputs and low income. The Nigerian economy is declining particularly in the area of agricultural productivity because of lack of credit facilities, which prevented many farmers from adopting improved practices, since some of them lack the collateral for secure loan or credit from financial institutions [Asogwa et al, 2014].

Informal credits have been gaining increasing attention in literature with reports of popularity of informal lenders among the rural poor who in some cases see them as the only means of financing their farm and other business activities. Informal financial institutions are well patronized in Nigeria.

Writing on the popularity of fixed and rotating savings and credit associations (ROSCAs), Seibel (2010), notes that there may be only few Nigerians who are not a member in one or several of them. Virtually, all ethnic group has its own institutions and proper names (adashi, in Hausa, perhaps the best-known besides esusu); and most adults are members in one or several (Nwankwo 2013).

The money lender is no less important in the informal credit arrangements in rural communities, in spite of the fact that he may not be the most desired person in the community because of his antecedents. In spite of his usurious rates, Ijere (2015) affirms that he is patronized by many in Nigeria’s rural areas because his timeliness in credit disbursement, a broader interpretation of farm credit to include the farm and home financing and expeditious enforcement of loan terms to ensure enforcement.

Khandker and Faruqee (2013) noted that informal credit is largely used for consumption and it’s not large enough to spur investment and growth. Credit in agriculture is very important as technical inputs can be purchased and used by farmers only if sufficient money (funds) is available with farmers and most farmers suffer from the problem of inadequate financial state. This situation leads to borrowing from an easy and comfortable source.

Up until 1935 professional money lenders were the only source of credit to agriculture. Their charges rate of interest used to be unduly exorbitant and follow serious practices while giving loans and recovering them. As a result, farmers were heavily burdened with debts and many of them are left with perpetuated debts.

There were widespread discontents among farmers against these practices and there were instances of riots also. Informal credit dominates agricultural financing among the rural households as in the case of other rural settings (Avishay & Guash, 2016). The dominance of informal finance with a lack of market-based rural finance has negative implications for rural growth and welfare (Khandker & Farugee, 2015).

The demand for credits from this rather highly segmented informal market is increasingly high despite these pitfalls. The government policy of providing cheap credit to the agricultural sector by developing economies through formal financial intermediaries has failed.

As pointed out by Hoff and Stiglitz (2013) and Basu (2015), apart from the inability of rural dwellers to access these cheap funds, the would-be beneficial trickle-down effect of reducing the usurious rate of interest in the informal sector by lowering the cost of fund to the lenders is far from being achieved.

In rural settings credit from informal sector continues to dominate agricultural financing. The informal credit sources have played more significant roles in agricultural financing than formal sources since it is closer to the rural farmer in Nigeria.

In Nigeria some of the informal credit sources that are popular are; savings cooperatives, credit associations, rotating savings, lending, gifts from relative and friends, merchants, various clubs, village banks, and money lenders (Otu 2013; Udoh, 2011, Oni et al., 2011 and Ugbomeh et al., 2008).

The role of informal lenders in financing agricultural activities is huge owing to the fact that more than 80% of farmers in the state operate in small scale basis in so many states (Akpan et al., 2010). Farmers could not afford stringent requirements of formal credit sources; and are therefore left with very little access to financial services from the formal financial system (Udoh, 2011).

Following the current policy of Akwa Ibom state government on increased agricultural production and achievement of selffood sufficiency; there is an overwhelming need to increase financial capital into rural agricultural sub-sector in the state. Informal lending institutions provide the best platform for the achievement of this goal since majority of them operate in rural areas.

In spite of the importance of credit in agricultural production, its acquisition and repayment are fraught with a number of problems especially among farmers in the rural communities (Awoke, 2010; Udoh, 2011; Oladeebo et al., 2008).

Increase in informal credit delinquency among farmers in Benue state could negate the state government policy objective on increased agricultural productivity. The sustainability of the informal lending institution which is the closest to the farmers in the state could be in jeopardy with increasing loan default among it beneficiaries.

However, Aryeetey (2012) stated that the informal rural financial sources in Africa perform better than the formal sources because they have adapted to the high-risk environment. Hence, there is need to assess farmers’ specific characteristics that could affect loan repayment to informal lenders in the state.

The credit inadequacy has been a major problem militating against the effectiveness and development of rural farmers in Markurdi local government area of Benue State, and thus it is need for credit source to help break this vicious cycle of poverty that exists among them and thereby improve their socio-economic well-being.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Nigeria has been known as a developing country with most of her population living in rural areas, in which employment in agricultural production accounts for more than 50% on individual basis.

The proportion of households that have their main income from agriculture is much. However, farmer’s access to credit in Nigeria remains a difficult task because of the nature of the rural credit markets and the lending procedures. Non institutional and institutional markets are observed to commonly exist in rural Nigeria.

The supply of institutional lenders is quite restricted, because of the formal market imperfection, so the non institutional credit sources are likely to be dominant in rural areas. Poor and low-income households are often limited to access institutional credit, because they do not have enough collateral, so cannot borrow on the basis of their income.

Improving the availability of credit facilities to this sector is one of the incentives that have been proposed for stimulating its growth and the realization of its potential contribution to the economy (ROK, 2015). In addition, there is no empirical study indicating the potential role of improved lending policies by both formal and informal credit institutions in alleviating problems of access to credit.

Knowledge in this area, especially a quantitative analysis of the effects of lending policies on the choice of credit sources by farmers, is lacking for the rural financial markets of Nigeria. Although non institutional sources of credit intermediaries have proved relatively successful in meeting the credit needs of small enterprises in some countries, their limited resources restrict the extent to which they can effectively and sustainably satisfy the credit needs of these entrepreneurs (Nappon and Huddlestone, 2014).

This is because as small scale farmers expand in size, the characteristics of loans they require become increasingly difficult for informal credit sources to satisfy, yet they still remain too small for the formal lenders (Aryeetey, 1996a). Credit inadequacy has been a problem militating against the development of the rural farmers in the world at large and Nigeria in particular.

This inadequacy is caused by a number of factors, which include the part of farmer’s lack of knowledge of the sources of credit. Based on the considerations above, the aim of this paper is providing an overall review of problems and prospects of non-institutional sources of farm credits in Nigeria.

1.3 AIMS OF THE STUDY

The major purpose of this study is to examine non-institutional sources of farm credits: problems and prospects. Other general objectives of the study are:

To examine the sources of non-institutional credit in the study area.

To examine problems farmers face in loan procurement and repayment.

To examine the impact of informal credit on farm income in Markurdi, Benue state.

To Identify the major constraints affecting the use of informal financial institution in the study area

To examine the relationship between non-institutional farm credits and sustainable development.

To suggest ways in which better agricultural financing could guarantee a sustainable development in Nigeria.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

What are the sources of non-institutional credit in the study area?

What are problems farmers face in loan procurement and repayment?

What is the impact of informal credit on farm income in Markurdi, Benue state?

What are the major constraints affecting the use of informal financial institution in the study area?

What is the relationship between non-institutional farm credits and sustainable development?

In what ways will agricultural financing guarantee a sustainable development in Nigeria?

RESEARCH HYPOTHESES

Hypothesis 1

There is no significant impact of impact of informal credit on farm income in Markurdi, Benue state.

There is a significant impact of impact of informal credit on farm income in Markurdi, Benue state.

Hypothesis 2

There is a significant relationship between non-institutional farm credits and sustainable development.

There is a significant relationship between non-institutional farm credits and sustainable development.

1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study is aimed at evaluating the financing, policies and initiatives in the agricultural sector in Nigeria, for a sustainable development. The findings from this study will help various stages of Government in Nigeria, thereby helping in policy statement, especially now that the economy is begging for diversification.

The Private sectors, Non-Governmental Organizations, farmers and potential farmers will find the findings of the study useful for their decision making process. Researchers and potential ones are likely to benefit from this study.

Dietary Pattern and Nutritional Status of In-School Adolescents in Abeokuta South and Abeokuta North Local Government Areas of Ogun State

ABSTRACT
Adolescents are considered as a nutritionally vulnerable subgroup. A rapid growth rate combined with marginal nutrient intakes increases the risk of nutritional deficiencies in this population. Poor nutritional status in adolescence compounds the risk of adolescent pregnancy and it is an important determinant of health outcomes at a later stage of life.

A knowledge of an healthy dietary pattern in adolescence is an Investment in Present and Future Health. The objective of this study was to Characterize the dietary pattern and Assess the Nutritional status of in-School Adolescents in Abeokuta South and Abeokuta North local Government Areas of Ogun State.

The study was descriptive cross-sectional in design. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to select 775 in-school adolescent boys and girls aged 10 -19 years in 10 public secondary schools each in Abeokuta South and North local Government Areas.

Anthropometric measurements were taken using Standard Procedures, Socio demographic Data were obtained through a self- administered questionnaire while usual nutrient intakes were determined through a 24 hour dietary recall.

Dietary pattern was determined by factor analysis of data obtained from the self administered food frequency questionnaire. Additional structured questions on eating habits were answered on a different questionnaire to serve as correlates of dietary pattern. Statistical analysis included descriptive, inferential and dimension reduction statistics.

More than one-third (35.4%) of the subjects were boys while 64.6% were girls. About half (50.3%) were in junior secondary school, while 49.7% were in senior secondary school. The boys and girls had a mean weight of 45.68 and 45.05 kg respectively, a mean height of 155.84 and 155.08 cm respectively and a mean BMI of 18.84 and 18.68 kg/m2 respectively.

The Mean NAR for Energy, Carbohydrate and Protein were 0.83, 2.47 and 1.61 respectively while Mean NAR for Calcium, Folate, Zinc and Iron were 0.23, 1.14, 0.44 and 0.73 respectively. Factor

analysis revealed 2 distinct dietary patterns labelled a “western” pattern highly loaded in Pastries, beverages, Dairy, Canned foods, Sugared drinks and Poultry and a “mixed” pattern which loaded highly in Cereals, Legumes, Roots and tubers, Fruits, Vegetables and Processed Cereals.

Both patterns explained 38.18 and 31.46% of the variation of food intakes respectively. More than one-third (39.9%) of the subjects had irregular breakfast, 52.6% had irregular lunch and 19.7% had irregular dinner. Majority (90.3%) of the subjects snacks on a daily basis, 67.2% eats out or order food at varying degrees.

The prevalence of stunting for boys and girls were 10.7% and 9.5% respectively. The prevalence of underweight was 13.7% for boys and 16% for girls. The prevalence of overweight was 2.7% for boys and 3.8% for girls, while 2.7% of boys and 1.1% of girls were obese. The “western” dietary pattern was significantly associated with snacking

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION

Adolescents are considered to be a nutritionally vulnerable subgroup of the population, a rapid growth rate combined with marginal nutrient intakes increases the risk of nutritional deficiencies in this population.

The nutritional demands associated with rapid physical and cognitive development and maturation are substantial (Rogol et al., 2002, spear et al., 2002). Poor nutritional status during adolescence is an important determinant of health outcomes at a later stage of life (kabir et al., 2010).

Adolescence represents an important life stage for the development of healthy nutrition behaviors (Mcnaughton et al., 2008). There is evidence that nutrition behaviors track from adolescence into adulthood (Lake et al., 2004). Therefore, the promotion of healthy nutrition during adolescence has the potential to confer significant long-term health benefits.

Despite the importance of nutrition for adolescents’ current and future health, Many adolescents consume diets that may not be adequate for their requirements. For example, studies from the US,

Europe, and Australia demonstrated that adolescents tend to have lower than desirable intakes of fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and whole grains but higher than desirable intakes of soft drinks, confectionery, and fast foods (Harnack et al., 2003, Yngve et al., 2005).

Consequently, many adolescents fall short of achieving optimal nutrient intakes for good health and development.

Diet is a complex exposure variable, which calls for multiple approaches to examine the relationship between diet, nutritional status and disease risk, dietary pattern analysis is one of these approaches (Hu 2002).

Previous investigations of adolescents’ diet have tended to focus on intakes of individual foods or individual nutrients.

However, in recent years, the use of dietary pattern analysis has become popular for characterizing the whole diet in combination, because this approach captures complex behaviors and potentially interactive and antagonistic effects among nutrients that might impact health outcomes (Mishra et al., 2002, Newby et al., 2006).

Dietary patterns can be measured by means of statistical methods using collected dietary information. The methodology for defining dietary patterns is relatively new and is still in development.

However, three approaches have been used in the literature: factor analysis, cluster analysis, and dietary indices (Hu 2002). Both factor analysis and cluster analysis are considered “a posteriori” because the eating patterns are derived through statistical modelling of dietary data at hand (Trichopoulos 2001).

The dietary index approach, in contrast, is “a priori” because the indices are created on the basis of previous knowledge of an “healthy” diet.
Methods for studying dietary patterns, such as principal components factor analysis and cluster analysis,

have become more widely used in epidemiology to summarize dietary data and investigate predictors and health outcomes associated with dietary patterns (kerver et al., 2003, Nettleton et al., 2006, Waijers et al., 2006, Schulze et al., 2006).

Over the past few decades, the diet quality of adolescents has declined with increased energy intake from fast food, soft drinks, and salty snacks, and decreased fruit and vegetable intake (Nielsen et al., 2002, Larson et al., 2007).

Although dietary patterns analysis has emerged as a popular alternative to traditional methods used in nutritional epidemiology, most studies have focused on adult populations (Cutler et al., 2009).

Some dietary patterns are consistently observed among adolescents, and put them at risk of unhealthy eating, the consequence of snacking, usually on energy-dense but otherwise nutrient-poor items, meal skipping, irregular eating patterns and a wide use of fast food for meals and snacks.

Other eating behaviors generally recognized as common among adolescents are eating away from home, low intake of fruits and vegetables, and in some instances, of dairy products as well; and weight concerns leading to faulty dieting practices, particularly in girls (Forthing 1991, Perry-Hummicuft and Newman1993, Gutierrez and King 1993).

Adolescents may also try unconventional dietary practices, such as vegetarian diets, which may reflect their propensity to adopt social causes and explore different philosophies (Johnston and Haddad, 1996).

Few studies examined behavioral correlates of dietary patterns, such as skipping breakfast (Song et al., 2005) or meal frequency. This study applied a dietary patterns approach to investigate the eating behaviors of adolescents. 14 14

1.1 Statement of the problem

Adolescents are considered as a nutritionally vulnerable subgroup because of a rapid growth rate combined with marginal nutrient intakes (Kabir et al., 2010) and also due to their eating behaviors (Forthing 1991; Perry-Hunnicuft and Newman, 1993).

Failure to consume adequate diet during adolescence results in delayed sexual maturation and arrests or slow linear growth (Story 1992).
Poor nutritional status compounds the risk of adolescent pregnancy. Delayed growth and maturation in girls as a result of malnutrition further increases the risks associated with adolescent pregnancy, as biological age lags behind chronological age.

This exposes both mother and child to adverse health and socioeconomic consequences (WHO 2005)
Malnutrition reduces adolescents’ working capacity and productivity (WHO 2005). Early malnutrition would affect physical work capacity through an adverse effect on height, body mass and more specifically muscle mass.

Height in particular has most often been shown to be associated with work output, productivity or income. Adolescents are exposed to under nutrition, micronutrient malnutrition as well as obesity.

Their lifestyle and eating behaviors, along with underlying psychosocial factors, are particularly important threats to adequate nutrition.(WHO 2005).

Development of health information systems to support adolescent health gains both through prevention and early intervention has been weak and so far lagged behind those for early childhood and adulthood.

The worst adolescent health profiles are in sub-Saharan Africa, with persisting high mortality from maternal and infectious causes (lancet 2012).Little is known indeed on nutrition-related perceptions, attitudes and behaviors in developing-country adolescents, apart from ICRW research findings (WHO 2005).

1.2 Justification for the study

Studying dietary pattern could have important public health implications because the overall pattern of dietary intake might be easy for the public to interpret or translate into diets (krauss et al., 2000).

Information on dietary pattern of adolescents can be used by policy makers in the development of health information systems to support adolescent health gains both through prevention and early intervention (WHO 2005).

Establishing an healthy dietary pattern of adolescents is an investment in adult health, because adolescents are in the process of establishing responsibility for their own health-related behaviors, including diet (WHO 2005).

A knowledge of an healthy and optimal dietary pattern in adolescence will improve and sustain the health of adolescents who are the future adults. population. The future economic development of

poorer countries rests in large part on the prospect of having increasing proportions of the future adults who are educated, healthy and economically productive. There is an important interaction between economic opportunity and attitudes of the youth as pertinently noted by Burt (1996).

1.3 Objectives of the study

1.3.1 General objective

The general objective of this study is to Characterize the dietary pattern and assess the nutritional status of in-school adolescents in Abeokuta south and Abeokuta north Local Government Areas of Ogun state, Nigeria.

AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION AGENT’S IMPACT ON AGRICULTURE DEVELOPMENT

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND

Agricultural extension is frequently viewed as an educational process that promotes learning by combining biological science findings with social science principles to effect changes in knowledge, skill, attitude, and practices in and out of the classroom (Ileubaoje 2004). According to Eremie (2005), agricultural extension services play a significant role in ensuring that Nigeria meets its million development goals.

These perceived important roles of agricultural extension influenced the creation of the agricultural development program (ADPs). With the reorganization and strengthening of the ADPS’s extension agent along the training and visits line in 2006, a number of activities were launched to ensure that the seven features of the trainings and visits are implemented.

These have resulted in a shift in the roles of extension workers, resulting in some level of satisfaction among both extension workers and their clients (Ajuwon 2006). It is also worth noting that, despite the tremendous achievements of Nigeria’s agricultural sector, the ADPs have been plagued by a slew of issues, particularly the end of World Bank counterpart funding.

These issues range from the Nona rail ability of facilities required for effective implementation and functioning of extension workers to poorly motivated staff, which results in low morale, a low level of role perception, and poor extension worker performance (Banmeke and Ajayi 2005) Chikwendu et al. (2007) noted that there have been indications of ineffectiveness in the extension agent of the ADPs in recent years.

Every manager’s goal is to increase production and efficiency in order to achieve the best possible results for the organization. Motivation for better performance is dependent on job satisfaction, achievement, recognition, and professional growth (Adeniyi, 2001). The rural area is the dominant food and fiber producing sector of Nigeria society, and all natural resources that comprise a nation’s wealth are obtained from the rural areas.

The rural is also important in Nigeria because it is where more than 70 percent of the people live and earn a living. The state of Nigeria’s rural areas is determined by a combination of methods, including available social, physical, and institutional infrastructures, as well as people’s standard of living, including perceived deprivation and satisfaction with current standard of living.

The rural areas of Nigeria are characterized by a lack of public infrastructure, poor education, poor health services, and low agricultural productivity, resulting in a low standard of living for the majority of the population. However, in recent years, agricultural extension agents have played a significant role in improving agricultural production in Nigeria through advisory services and adequate access to information on improved production techniques.

Agricultural extension plays a critical role in ensuring awareness and subsequent adoption of modern agricultural management methods. A variety of extension teaching methods have been used to ensure that technologies reach end users, the most prominent of which is the agricultural development program’s training and visit system.

The extension strategy’s central principle or idea is to produce competent and well-informed extension agents who will visit farmers frequently and regularly with relevant technical messages and bring farmers’ problems to research. Each extension agent is required to visit the farmers/group farmer’s on a regular basis with relevant messages that are specific to the farm practices taking place in the field at the time.

Farmers’ feedback is also brought to the research station by extension agents. The extension agent works under the assumption that increased agricultural productivity is primarily dependent on acceptance of improved cultural and technological change at the rural farm level, and that peasant farmers can achieve improved production only if they adopt recommended agricultural practices rather than traditional over.

Adoption of improved agricultural practices is dependent on rural farmers gaining the necessary knowledge and understanding of these technologies. This will increase productivity and raise the living standards of the agents’ beneficiaries (Lawal, Bodo Toriminobia Makanjuola) (2006) The efficiency of technologies generated and disseminated, on the other hand, is dependent on end-user adoption.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

All stakeholders, including the donor community, are concerned about the failure of various extension delivery approaches in developing countries to effectively engineer significant and sustainable agricultural growth.

Concerns have recently been fueled by the global wave of pluralism, market liberalization, and globalization, which has given rise to initiatives aimed at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of not only the sub-components of extension delivery, but the entire system of technology generation, dissemination, and use.

With a rapidly expanding population, environmental degradation, political instability, economic failure, and a shrinking budget, it is necessary to reconsider how agricultural technology is delivered to farmers. This rethinking paved the way for us to investigate the role of agricultural extension agents in agricultural development in Edo-Egor state’s local government.

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study is to look into the role of agricultural extension in the development of agriculture in the country, using Egor Local Government Area in Edo State as a case study.

THE STUDY’S IMPORTANCE

Knowing the impact of agriculture will go a long way toward encouraging individuals, governments, and non-governmental organizations to see the importance of agricultural extension in the country. In an effort to assess the impact of agricultural extension, problems encountered by extension agents will be investigated, and potential solutions will be proposed, which if implemented will aid in educating and alerting existing agricultural extension agents, as well as new agents, on what to expect as an extension agent.

QUESTION FOR RESEARCH

The research project includes the following research questions

1. What are people’s perceptions of agricultural extension?

2. Have you had a visit from an extension agent?

3. What role does this visit play in your agricultural life?

4. What are the obstacles to making the best use of agricultural extension?

THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVE

This study will investigate the impact of agricultural extension on agricultural development in the country, with Egor Local Government Area of Edo-state as the case study. This study’s populations include farmers in the local government as well as agricultural extension agents.

THE IMPACT OF COOPERATIVE FARMING SOCIETIES ON AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND

Agriculture is the most important industry in developing countries, such as Nigeria. It has been established that approximately to percent of the Nigerian population is engaged in agriculture (Obasi and Aug, 2000), while small farms produce 90 percent of Nigeria’s total food production and to percent of the country’s population earns a living from these small farms (Oluwatayo et al, 2008).

The recent importation of food items into the country to compensate for shortfalls in food supply is a dangerous indicator of warning farm productivity and a warning sign that if the country continues on its current course, the prospect of food security will be bleak for millions of people (Nwede 2003)

It refers to employment. Agriculture is by far the most important sector of the Nigerian economy, employing roughly 70% of the labor force. Agricultural holdings are generally small and dispersed, and families are frequently of the subsistence variety, with simple tools and shifting cultivation.

These small farms produce roughly 80% of total food production. Cultivation covers approximately 30.7 million hectares (76 million acres), or 33 percent of Nigeria’s land area. Nigeria’s diverse climate, ranging from the tropical coast to the arid zone of the north, allows it to produce virtually all agricultural products that can be grown in the tropical and semitropical areas of the world.

The economic benefits of large-scale agriculture are recognized, and the government encourages the formation of cooperative societies and settlements to encourage industrial agriculture. Large-scale agriculture, on the other hand, is uncommon.

Despite an abundant water supply, a favorable climate, and a large area of arable land, productivity is limited in many areas due to low soil fertility and inefficient agricultural methods. In 2001, it contributed 32% of GDP.

It is widely acknowledged that cooperatives are an essential component. Co-operatives serve as the foundation and plant form for bringing together economically disadvantaged members of society in order to improve their individual capacities (Akali, 1991).

Cooperatives make enormous contributions to the economy, particularly in developing countries, ranging from the provision of credit to its members and the sourcing of inputs at reasonable prices to the scale of member production (Okonkwuo, 1991). Cooperatives are defined as “an autonomous association of people who voluntarily join together to meet their common economic and social needs and aspirations through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise.”

Cooperatives are formed by like-minded individuals to pursue mutually beneficial economic interests (ICA, 1995). According to researchers, cooperatives play an important role in the provision of services that promote agricultural development under normal circumstances.

Patrick (1995) defined cooperatives as a medium through which agricultural services such as farm input, farm implements, and farm mechanization are provided. Loans, agricultural extension member education, marketing of member farm produce, and other economic activities and services provided to members on a regular and optimal basis will accelerate agricultural transformation and rural economic development. Ijere (1981) elaborated on this. It is the cooperative that welcomes all types of farmers, and a well-organized and supportive cooperative is a pillar of strength for Nigerian agriculture.

Ogunbameru (1986) also estimated that women make up 52 percent of the Nigerian population, with 70 percent of these women living in rural areas. According to Adebayo and Amao (2003), women make up 53% of the poor in Nigeria. A large number of women in rural areas are illiterate, very poor, have a high rate of infection, and are economically oppressed (Essien, 2000).

It was observed that only a small fraction of women in Nigeria had the benefit of higher education, with the majority engaged in petty trading and peasantry farming. Despite their low educational and economic backgrounds, Nigerian women are responsible for more than half of the country’s food basket and more than two-thirds of farm labor (Barret et al, 2001). They also reported that AFRICAN Women are responsible for 66 percent of microprocessing activities, particularly agricultural produce processing.

Small-scale farmers, the majority of whom live in rural areas, dominate agricultural production in Nigeria. Crops and livestock are raised on scattered farm holdings. The majority of farmers do not use modern production equipment. Their marketing system is disorganized, with each farmer producing farm inputs and selling farm produce on his or her own.

Cooperative societies enable people to accomplish what they would be unable to accomplish as individuals. They are legally established organizations based on a specific set of principles. Cooperative activities are one of the best ways for peasant farmers to participate in their own economic advancement while also gaining valuable experience in democratic produce and business management.

Akinwumi (1978). They are a group of people who have come together voluntarily to achieve a common goal by forming a democratically controlled organization, making equitable contributions to the required capital, and accepting a fair share of the risk and benefit of the undertaking (World Bank, 1999, Ebonyi and Jimo, 2002).

1.2 THE PROBLEM STATEMENT

Cooperatives have long been regarded as one of the most important institutional mechanisms for empowering economically disadvantaged members of society. Many agricultural cooperative societies have been formed throughout the country as a result of this official recognition and the determination of government (at all levels) to transform agricultural production and raise the standard of living in rural areas. Despite the cooperative societies’ efforts or contribution to agricultural development in Nigeria, this effort has not been widely publicized, and this study was designed to address this issue.

1.3 THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVE

1. Determine the extent to which farmers participate in cooperative societies.

2. Determine the advantages that respondents gain from belonging to various cooperative societies.

3. Identify major issues that are impeding farmer participation in cooperative activities.

4. Make policy recommendations based on funding.

1.4 RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS STATEMENT

Because of the statistical testability of the problems formulated, hypothesis testing as a measure will greatly assist in carrying out the research to a logical conclusion based on the nature of the problems aforementioned.

A hypothesis is an assumption or statement about the population that may or may not be true. Walpole (1974). As a result, the hypothesis of this study is regarded as a tentative statement, which will be considered positive or negative at the conclusion of the research presentation.

i. f0: Agricultural organizations are unaware of the existence of cooperative societies.

ii. f0: Cooperative societies’ objectives, programs, and agricultural strategies are not recognized and accepted by agricultural organizations.

F1: Agricultural organizations recognize and accept cooperative societies’ objectives, programs, and agricultural strategies.

iii. f0: Cooperative societies have made no positive contributions to agricultural activities.

f1: Cooperative societies have made a positive contribution to agricultural activities.

1.5 THE STUDY’S SIGNIFICANCE

This study is attempting to determine the impact of cooperative societies on agricultural production in the Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. Knowing the contribution of cooperative societies will encourage farmers and enlighten them on the significance of this society. This study will also reveal solutions to the problems impeding farm participation in cooperative activities in the study area.

1.6 THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVE

The research will highlight the importance of cooperative societies in financing farmers in rural Edo State.

1.8TERM DEFINITION

Agriculture is the process of growing plants and raising domesticated animals in order to produce food, feed, and fiber. It is a broad term for productive activities such as crop cultivation. animal raising (including poultry) forestry and fishing

Gross Domestic Product (GDP): A measure of all services and goods produced in a country over a specific time period, typically a year.

GDP = C+I+G+ (consumption + gross investment + government + export – import)

(X=-M).

Peasant: An agricultural worker with roots in the countryside in which they live, either working for others or owning or renting and working a small plot of land with his or her own labor.

Chapter 4: Data Presentation and Analysis – A Comprehensive Guide Introduction The finest practices for a great Chapter 4: Data […]

Chapter 4: Data Presentation and Analysis – A Comprehensive Guide

Introduction

The finest practices for a great Chapter 4: Data Presentation and analysis are covered in this guide. This chapter is the culmination of all of your laborious data collecting, careful analysis, and research narrative. Consider it the great reveal of your results, when you can impart the knowledge you’ve learned from your research. The general structure of the chapter four is;

Introduction (which contains the Overview of the Research Design and introduces the chapter)

Data Analysis and Presentation

Discussion of Findings

Conclusion and Transition to Chapter 5

Don’t worry, this guide will help you through the process of presenting your data such that it is understandable, captivating, and apparent even to someone who hasn’t read the earlier parts of your work.

Assume we are talking about the best approach to present your results while seated across from one another. The organisation of this chapter as well as the details of data presentation—tables, figures, and narrative descriptions—will all be covered. When this guide ends, you’ll know how to write a Chapter 4 that not only stands alone but also emphasises the importance of your study.

__________________________________________________

Transition from Chapter 3

Getting from Chapter 3 (Methodology) to your data presentation should go effortlessly. For your readers, this establishes the scene and offers continuity. Reminding your readers of how you gathered and analysed your data, begin with a quick summary of the study design. Though brief, this summary should be thorough enough to jog readers’ memories.

For example:

‘We described the quantitative techniques used to gather data from a sample of 200 participants in Chapter 3. Using these statistical tools, the data were examined to find connections and patterns pertinent to our study topics. We provide the conclusions of this analysis in this chapter.”

__________________________________________

Brief Overview of the Research Project

Next, provide a synopsis of your study endeavour. This has to contain a synopsis of the goal of the study along with a restatement of your research questions or hypotheses. Because it makes sure your readers are aware of the background of the data being provided and links your results with the study goals, this part is essential.

For instance:

“This research sought to find out how college students’ use of social media affected their academic performance. How does college students’ academic performance relate to their use of social media was the main study topic. ‘What kinds of social media do students use most often?’ was one of the secondary questions. and ‘Is the amount of time kids spend on social media related to their GPA?’”

__________________________________________

Organization of the Chapter four

Clearly describe the chapter’s organisation. This facilitates simple navigation of the material by your viewers. Summarise the primary parts, such:

Introduction (which contains the Overview of the Research Design and introduces the chapter)

Data Analysis and Presentation

Discussion of Findings

Conclusion and Transition to Chapter 5

Offering a road map guarantees that your readers can follow along without becoming lost.

________________________________________

Data Analysis and Presentation

This becomes the main idea of Chapter 4. You will logically and orderly display your results here. The secret is to make sure the facts speaks for itself while still being succinct and precise. Your presentation will vary somewhat depending on whether your study is qualitative or quantitative.

Quantitative Research

An explanation of the sample should open your data presentation in quantitative research. Add specifics such the sample size, the demographics, and other pertinent features. This gives the information that follows perspective.

Sample Description:

“200 college students made up our sample, which was divided 60% female and 40% male. Participants ranged in age from 18 to 25; the average age was 21.”

Deliver the descriptive statistics next. This comprises the means, standard deviations, frequencies, and percentages. To help readers understand the important ideas, summarise this material using tables and figures.

Descriptive Statistics Example:

Variable

Mean

Standard Deviation

Minimum

Maximum

GPA

3.2

0.5

2.0

4.0

Hours Spent on Social Media

15

5

5

25

Take up each hypothesis or research question one at a time after the descriptive statistics. Explain the procedure followed, provide the findings, and indicate if the null hypothesis was rejected for each hypothesis.

Send us a Whatsapp Message Click Here

Don't struggle alone - send a quick message and have a professional writer working on your project today

or email your files to contact@premiumresearchers.com

Hypothesis Testing Example

“To test the hypothesis that higher social media usage is associated with lower GPA, a Pearson correlation analysis was conducted,” the paper says. Assuming that more social media use is linked to a lower GPA, the findings showed a significant negative connection (r = -0.45, p < 0.01).

__________________________________

Qualitative Research

Presenting themes and patterns that sprang from your data is the main goal of qualitative research. Initially, provide a quick overview of the data collecting procedure and the analytical techniques.

Data Collection and Analysis example:

“Twenty people participated in semi-structured interviews that yielded the data. Themes analysis was used to code the data and find recurrent themes once the interviews were transcribed.”

Narrate the results, emphasising important themes and bolstering them with participant quotations. Subheadings help to arrange the topics and improve readability of the section.

Themes and Patterns Examples:

Theme 1: Impact of Social Media on Study Habits

“Participants noted that, social media prevented them from concentrating on their schoolwork. ‘I find myself going around Instagram when I should be preparing for exams’, one participant said. Many others agreed, suggesting that social media may be a major distraction.”

Theme 2: Positive Uses of social media

“Some participants brought out the advantages of social media in spite of the distractions. ‘Social media helps me stay connected with classmates and access study resources,’ one student said. This implies that academic help may likewise benefit much from social media.”

Theme 3: Social Media as a Stress Reliever

“Many interviewees said they used social media to unwind and escape the pressures of schoolwork. ‘I spend a few minutes on YouTube watching hilarious videos when I feel overburdened with my homework,’ one student said. That restores me. This emphasises how social media may both support and impede academic output.”

Theme 4: The Influence of Social Media on Peer Relationships

“A number of kids spoke about how social media affects their friendships with classmates. ‘Social media helps me remain in contact with peers, particularly for group assignments,’ said one. ‘I feel left out sometimes when I see my pals hanging around without me,’ said another participant. This paradox highlights the nuanced function of social media in student social relations.”

______________________________________________________

Discussion of Findings

Discussion of your results is crucial after data presentation. The findings should be interpreted in this part and related to the body of current literature and your research questions. Talk about and weigh any surprising results.

Interpretation and Implications:

“Higher social media use can have a detrimental effect on academic performance, as the negative correlation between social media use and GPA suggests. According to earlier study by Smith et al. (2019), who also discovered a comparable correlation, this result is consistent. Still, the encouraging comments on utilising social media for academic help emphasises how social media can serve as a resource as well as a distraction.”

“Qualitative data highlighted even more the complex experiences of the pupils. Social networking is a stress relief and a way to keep up peer connections, even if it can also be a distraction. These results indicate that the effect of social media on academic achievement is not clear-cut and varies according to personal use habits and goals.”

Think back on your study’s shortcomings and recommend new directions for investigation. This demonstrates your critical interaction with your data and thought through the wider consequences of your work.

___________________________________

Limitations

“The use of self-reported data in this research has several drawbacks, like social desirability bias. Further limiting the generalizability of the results may be the very small sample size for the qualitative interviews.”

Future Research (optional):

“Future studies may look at how certain social media platforms affect academic achievement and how these impacts vary over time. Examining methods for juggling social media usage with school obligations might potentially provide insightful information.”

____________________________________

Conclusion and Transition to Chapter 5

A synopsis of your results should close Chapter 4 and lead into Chapter 5, where you will go over the main conclusions of your research and provide suggestions.

Conclusion:

“In conclusion, our research revealed that there are both good and negative effects of social media use on academic achievement. The results emphasise the importance of students using social media in moderation. We will go into the wider ramifications of these results and provide suggestions for teachers and students in Chapter 5.”

______________________________________________________

Tips for Effective Data Presentation

These more pointers will help you make sure your Chapter 4 is interesting and successful:

1Use Visual Aids: Charts, graphs, and tables may help you visualise your results and simplify difficult information. Be sure the content references and labels them appropriately.

Be succinct and clear; stay away from jargon and too technical vocabulary. Seek for simplicity and clarity to ensure that a wide range of people can grasp your results.

Consider your data presentation to be a story. As you lead your readers through the material, emphasise important details and make links between disparate bits of information.

Be Honest: Include all pertinent results, including those that contradict your theories. Research needs transparency.

Draw in the Reader: Write in a conversational, interesting style. Imagine sharing your results with an interested but non-expert friend or coworker.

Chapter 4 may be made interesting and understandable as well as instructive by adhering to these recommendations. Recall that the objective of data presentation is to produce an impression on your readers that lasts a lifetime and emphasises the importance of your study.
