EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION: AS A STRATEGY FOR ENHANCING ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

ABSTRACT

Everyone in society needs to be computer literate, which prompted us to conduct out this project work titled the level of computer literacy possessed by junior secondary science teachers in Enugu education zone. We have five research designs, and the study area is the Enugu education zone.

We utilized simple random sampling. The study’s sample consists of ten schools chosen at random from the zone’s 27 existing schools. 50 instructors were chosen from the zone’s 150 teachers, with 5 teachers from each of the ten schools sampled. The questionnaire was the primary data collection tool.

The instrument was organized in the following order: highly agree, agree, disagreed, and strongly disagreed. According to our research, instructors still have a long way to go in the technological world.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND

This century has seen the transition of human society from the industrial to the information eras. The amount of information that circulates in an economy is increasingly used to gauge its level of development. Industries have a competitive edge if they have a monopoly on certain types of business information.

Because they have more information, the nation is stronger than others. As a result, it is not unexpected that governments and private businesses invest a considerable amount of their budgets in information technology. The computer is essential in the acquisition, processing, storage, dissemination, and use of audio, graphical, textual, and numerical data.

The use of computers has transformed the way we do business, study, work, and social activities, among other things, and it continues to have a tremendous impact on and change our daily lives. The computer has had such an impact that it is viewed as an enabling technology, a change agent, and the creation of previously imagined possibilities.

According to Okolo (2007), a thorough examination of the concept of computer yields three devices that classify it as a computer;

i. Taking in input as data

ii. Analyzing the received data

iii. Making the processed data available as information.

As a result, a person’s computer skills will primarily decide his or her values in the job in the future decades. Computer literacy, like traditional literacy, is already having a significant impact on professional opportunities.

Okolo described computer literacy as the ability to instruct a computer to perform what you want it to accomplish through operation. To tell a computer what to do, the human must first grasp exactly what he or she wants. The operator must then go through the information before confirming it in order for the computer to complete the operational task assigned to it efficiently.

To be able to teach the computer to accomplish particular tasks for him or her, one needs first learn and understand computer language, such as programming languages. Nobody can use a computer unless they give it instructions, which is what programming is. We must recognize that programming abilities function in tandem with computer operation as the foundation of computer literacy.

According to Okolo (2007), a computer is an electronic gadget or equipment that accepts data as an input and electronically processes the data to produce the intended output or information using a set of instructions. An input port is a device that allows a computer machine to accept data.

Somewhere to preserve the sequence of operations to be altering the data or executing the circulation known as the Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU), and ultimately, a technique of telling the outcome of the calculation. These features are shared by all computing machines, regardless of the work at hand.

Edafiogho (2007) described the various ways information and communication technology (ICT) can be used in education, including learning, online learning, digital literacy, assessment, information literacy, and digital virtual libraries. In education, ICT can be utilized for teleprocessing, telephone, database, electronic bulletin board, and other purposes. ICT has proven to be quite beneficial in teaching and learning, particularly in secondary schools.

An examination of the application reveals that ICT is required in the following areas:

i. The provision of instructional resources for the teaching and learning of tedious and uninteresting topics.

ii. It also gives teachers access to teaching tools utilized in other regions of the world to help students understand a concept.

iii. Providing ICT in secondary schools aids in improving access to learning opportunities, redressing inequalities, boosting learning quality, and delivering long-term learning possibilities.

iv. It makes it easier for professors and students to find information in their classwork and assignments.

v. It allows teachers to select from a variety of teaching and learning experiences to allow instruction in the learners.

1.2 THE PROBLEM’S STATEMENT

Education is an area in which data processing using a computer as an aid to teaching and learning in a classroom, communication, which is the use of the internet for global research and effective communication to the entire world, is required. It is critical for both instructors and students to become computer literate in order to cope with the society’s ongoing development.

We then discover that both teachers and students in our educational institution today are still uninformed of information technology. Enugu Education Zone is not immune to this ignorance. They continue to have secondhand knowledge of what is going on in society. There is every reason to wonder, then, what is the level of computer literacy among Enugu Zone teachers, specifically science teachers.

1.3 STUDY OBJECTIVE

The goal of this study is to determine the level of computer literacy among junior secondary school science teachers in Enugu Zone.

Specifically, the goal of this initiative is to discover;

a. How well are the schools computerized?

b. To what extent do the teachers understand how to communicate using computers?

b. Can the teachers effectively teach computer operation to their students?

d. How far have the teachers progressed in terms of general computer knowledge?

b. To what extent can teachers make use of the Microsoft Office suite?

1.4 THE STUDY’S IMPORTANCE

When this research is completed, the extent of computer literacy possessed by junior secondary science teachers in Enugu state, specifically Enugu zone, will be recognized, and we will give fantastic suggestions to help everyone along the path to being computer literate.

We must emphasize the significance of computers in data processing, teaching and learning in the classroom, and communication. After discussing it, the government and Parents Teachers Association (P.T.A.) will be able to put things back in order.

As a result, in this project effort, we intended the path forward for all teachers and schools to purchase the idea if it was necessary for them. We must advance in our knowledge acquisition, particularly on computers, in order to cope with the global age.

1.5 THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVE

This study only looks at the level of computer literacy among junior secondary school science instructors in Enugu, Enugu state.

1.6 QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH

To guide the investigation, the following research questions were developed:

i. How well do the professors understand computer communication?

ii. How far have the schools been computerized?

iii. To what extent have teachers mastered the art of computer instruction?

iv. To what extent do the teachers have a general understanding of computers?

v. To what extent can teachers make use of the Microsoft Office suite?

1.7 TERMS’ DEFINITIONS

Computer: An electronic computer that accepts data as input, processes the data, generates output (result) in the form of information, and stores both the input/data and the output information for future use.

Computer Literacy: This is described as knowing how to operate or use a computer efficiently.

Hardware is a catch-all phrase for all visible and touchable physical components of a computer.

Software is a collection of programs that instruct the hardware on what to do and how to do it.

Data Processing is the manipulation of data by a computer in order to transform it into information.

Information Technology is the study of electronic devices, particularly computers, for storing, processing, analyzing, and transmitting data.
