WEB-BASED BIBLIOGRAPHIC INSTRUCTION

Abstract

\sPurpose The World Wide Web (WWW) is revolutionizing how academic libraries teach and learn. Academic libraries have embraced the WWW’s potential, developing novel ways to meet the needs of users. One of these methods is to provide automated bibliographic instruction via web-based tutorials.

This paper will go over recommended guidelines for web-based instruction and provide a framework for libraries all over the world to use when developing web-based instructional programs.

The stated goal is to identify critical design and evaluation criteria for web-based literacy and information instruction. Based on preliminary research, the author examined library instruction literature to determine what criteria were available for those wishing to create effective web-based training modules.

The author also searched non-library literature for web-based training criteria, which were then compared to library professionals’ criteria. Over a two-year period, the author observed a progression and shift in the guidelines developed by library professionals, which reflects not only advances in technology, but also a better understanding by librarians of what elements are required to structure an effective online bibliographic instruction program.

To determine the usability or deficiency of the established criteria, the library guidelines were examined in the context of current research on bibliographic instruction.

There have been very few end-user studies on online tutorials in the library instruction literature to date. The final section of this paper will discuss evaluation and usability studies of web learning modules.
