THE REASONS AND CONSEQUENCES OF DRUGS AND ALCOHOL ABUSE

ABSTRACT

Students desire an autonomous and independent life free of authority, and as a result, they engage in a variety of delinquent behaviours (drug abuse, rape, robbery, cultism, and vandalism) that are hazardous to the home, community, school, and nation. Adolescent drug addiction has been associated with moral degradation, violence, assault, insanity, and murder.

The threat of drug misuse has eaten deep into the fabric of our society; but, with efficient therapy programmes and a government and other appropriate authorities campaign against drug usage, the problems can be addressed. Drug control counselling centres should be built in every community, and qualified health counsellors should be hired to assist drug users by providing them with unique advise on how to navigate the withdrawal system.

The federal, state, and local governments will establish drug awareness units in all states, not to prosecute drug users as criminals, but to assist them in resolving their socio-psychological problems. This study examines the notion of drug misuse, its kinds, theories of cause, signs and symptoms, effects, and prevention techniques.

CHAPITRE ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The goal of incorporating this course into the college curriculum is to empower youth/adolescents to make informed decisions about the use of drugs and alcohol after studying their positive and negative effects on the human body. Alcohol and other drugs are commonly used by youths on our various college and campus campuses.

The decision to use alcohol and drugs such as Marijuana, Indian Hemp, Cocaine, as an adult one has to know the limits and weaknesses of the use of drugs and alcohol and have responsibility for your actions.

It becomes drug abuse, social use of drugs involves the use of certain substances for recreational purposes, although not all drugs used in this manner are harmful, but some are socially acceptable.

Some of these drugs, such as alcohol, cigarettes, and kola nuts, are not considered drug abuse if used in moderation and only by adults.

Drug and alcohol abuse: We cannot stay on the fence, criminally pretending that the threat of drug and alcohol misuse, which has eaten deeply into the fabric of our national heritage (young lives), will continue to eat deeper. Taking a drug is one thing; abusing a drug is quite another. Drug abuse is defined as the use of a drug without a medical purpose or supervision.

Drugs are overused because users gain brief satisfaction, emotional thrill, relaxation, or alleviation from the problem; it is a pitiful situation that kids in secondary school are now heavily involved. Finally, the general public’s attention must be drawn to revitalised and collectively salvage together in order to prevent total degeneration and loss of lives and values.

As a result, all hands must be on deck to combat the monster of drug and alcohol abuse that affects us on a daily basis, socially, educationally, politically, and morally, even through mass media as far as our efforts can go. According to the medical lexicon, a drug is any substance that affects the structure or functioning of a living creature.

Dr. Wale Oloyede (2002) defines a drug as any chemical agent capable of changing biological functions such as respiration, growth, excretion, location, reproduction, and so on. Drugs have both detrimental and good effects, and decisions regarding when and how to use them therapeutically always require weighing the benefits and dangers, which can be divided into two categories.

The Influence of Alcohol and Drugs on Specific Organs

Long-term alcohol usage causes lasting brain damage in adults. When this occurs, the individual gets forgetful; pregnant women harm the brain of the unborn kid, resulting in alcohol syndrome; this is a condition in which an infant has abnormalities owing to the mother’s consumption of alcohol during pregnancy; the infant also has mental retardation.

System of the Cardiovascular System

Regular alcohol consumption causes irregularities in the normal heartbeat. Long-term alcohol consumption also causes damage to the muscular wall of the heart.

System of Digestive Excretion

Alcohol is linked to esophageal and stomach diseases that cause vomiting and retching. Alcohol can also cause fear of the lower region of the oesophagus, resulting in large blood vomiting, ulcers, and pancreatic destruction in heavy drinkers.

Anaemia and malnutrition

Alcohol contains non-nutritive calories, and because chronic alcoholics do not consume enough, they become vitamin deficient, making the alcoholic prone to anaemia and other disorders.

(1) Soft drugs, such as antibiotics and analgesics.

(2) Hard drugs (e.g., cocaine, marijuana, heroin, and so on).

For the purposes of the study, we will delve deeper into the causes and effects of drugs and alcohol on adolescents, with Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State serving as the case study due to its significance in state and national development.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

It is usual to see secondary school students strolling around outside the school grounds during lessons, some late to school, some missing class, some leaving their home for school, but in the end, they are neither at school nor at home. What a changing generation of teenagers.

Why on earth would teens engage in hard drug use to the detriment of their lives? Why would a secondary school student link himself with such a heinous act?

Is it possible that adolescent maladjustment is caused by internet use? Does marijuana improve adolescent cognition? Perhaps, but in what way? Our society’s ever-increasing population may have led to the threat of insanity.
