THE OAU AND CONFLICT MANAGEMENT IN THE NIGERIA CIVIL WAR

Abstract

This work explores the role of the african unity in the conflict management of the nigeria civil war from 1967 to 1970. After the end of the colonial era in nigeria, the emergence of political parties caused a conflict between the three tribes in Nigeria, the ncnc, ag, and npc.

The killing of major general aguiyi ironsi, who trys to move for a unitary government system, and the killings of thousands of ibo’s all around northern and western Nigeria, making the country unconducive for the ibo’s. Colonel ojukwu, the governor of Nigeria’s eastern region, demanded the return of ibo’s to the eastern region.

After major general aguiyi ironsi’s death, leiutenant colonel yakubu gowon reappeared as the head of state. They reached a dialogue after meeting in 1966 aburi on the gold coast between ojukwu and gowon. Ojukwu declared biafra an independent state on may 30th 1966, after some meetings against the secession, which failed, leading to the outburst of civil war.

The oau was created for the unity of African countries by emperor haile selassie, president ahidjo, president ankrah, and president diori. The oau is an essentially conservative organization by design and constitution. It is anti-border changes, anti-secessionist, and anti-interventionist.

Such an organization must deal with the questions of change and destruction inherent in the normal social process, that is, whether or not to recognize a change in a concrete situation and, if not, what concerted action should be taken to frustrate the change. The oau decided not to recognize the change in the Nigerian situation related to biafra’s demand for secession
