STUDENTS DROP OUT IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate and provide insight into the reasons why children drop out of secondary school. The structured questionnaire on student dropout and its impact was utilised to collect data. The questionnaire has 20 questions.

According to the findings of this study, a lack of parental participation leads to student dropout, as does a lack of proper assistance and counselling by the school. Teachers’ lack of motivation and a lack of fundamental learning tools cause students to drop out.

As a result, the study proposed that the government offer learning materials, enough chairs and tables, and consistent payment of teacher salaries to improve the teaching and learning process.

CHAPITRE ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Secondary education is the foundation of the entire educational system. The enormous contribution it contributes to the general development of the country is demonstrated by research studies conducted in both developed and developing countries, including Nigeria, in order to attain secondary education universalization.

Education has become the modern religion and the surest method to achieve self-sufficiency, economic prosperity, and development. According to the Federal Government of Nigeria (2004), this is why the Federal Government of Nigeria developed the universal basic education (UBE) project to elementary.

– Make compulsory free and universal basic education available to all Nigerian children of school age.

– Reduce the number of students dropping out of formal schooling dramatically by improving relevance, quality, and efficiency.

– Ensuring sufficient levels of literacy, linguistic and living skills, as well as the ethical, moral, and cruel values required for creating a firm basis for lifetime learning, etc.

However, dropout rates among secondary school pupils have been discovered. Society values riches and honours wealthy men, and wealth entices young boys and girls to pursue fortune rather than education, which has long-term worth and legacy.

Another observation stems from the school system’s instability as a result of frequent strike actions and frequent changes in government, resulting in inconsistent policy on educational matters such as changes in school curriculum, calendar, textbooks, and policies in school administration (Obadina 1989).

As a result, this study looks into the causes of secondary school dropout in Ogun State.

1.2 DEFINITION OF THE PROBLEM

The most important part of waste in the education system is student dropout, which has produced issues in the lives of individuals, parents, governments, and society at large. The school system is unstable as a result of frequent strike action and changes in government policies.

The curriculum is also insufficiently qualitative to match its theoretical nature. Due to intermittent wage payments, teachers are not fully devoted to their jobs.

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

– To determine the possible causes of secondary school student dropout in Ogun State.

– Determine whether kids dropping out of school cause emotional distress later in life.

– Determine whether kids’ dropping out of school is due to a lack of desire for responsibility and independence.

– Determine whether student dropout results in a loss of whole attention and restlessness in life.

– Finding out if students drop out causes the student to be misaligned with society since they are disorganised.

1.4RESEARCH RELATED QUESTIONS

To guide this investigation, the following research questions were developed.

– What are some of the possible causes of secondary school dropout?

– Do pupils dropping out of school cause emotional problems later in life?

– Does dropping out of school result in a lack of motivation for ambition and success?

– Does kids dropping out of school reflect a lack of desire for responsibility and independence?

1.5 THE IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY

The study’s conclusions will be extremely beneficial to students, parents, the government, and society as a whole.

Teachers who are well-treated by their employers will help to keep pupils in school. When facilities are offered in schools, children who would otherwise drop out and join bad gangs would successfully complete their secondary education and eventually become significant members of society.

DELIMITATIONS OF STUDY

This research looks on student dropout and its impact on secondary school pupils in Ogun State. The scope of this research is limited to the Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State.
