Because of information technology, the entire world has been transformed into a global village with a global economy that is increasingly dependent on the creative management and distribution of information. The world has changed dramatically over the last few decades, and the need to acquire, apply, and share knowledge has become increasingly important.
The age of knowledge and information has advanced to a higher gear in the twenty-first century. This is an era in which unnoticed knowledge and information play the role of prime movers, guiding all sectors.
The World Bank has coined the phrase “knowledge is development.” Underdevelopment is largely the result of a lack of knowledge. In a knowledge- and information-based society, creative minds become economic leaders, and knowledge workers are in high demand. If knowledge is equivalent to development, then the greater the knowledge gap, the greater the development gap.
